I'm not sure I fully understand what you're asking. Maybe an example would help me understand better. In general, though, I would suggest doing as much as possible while mixing, since you have much more control during this stage of production. Mixing would deal with the individual instrument tracks, and I consider anything done on the master track mastering, not mixing.
