In some songs you hear a drone playing… And that is like a proxy rhythm, and I have always thought of the oud as a melody instrument, one that you can “sing“ with… Using it as a rhythm back up or proxy makes perfect sense. This is a great video!
The last one is really cool, thanks Navid! Have you thought about making a video on the core principles of transcribing a rhythm from a percussive instrument to the oud? I'm playing with a dorola player and it's not always simple, even for rhythms like Maksum.
This also makes for a great Risha exercise as well…
