Why isn’t Brexit being mentioned this election? | LBC debate

  • Matthew Wright hears from callers Olga, John and Paul after Lord Heseltine claimed the next general election could be “one of the most dishonest” in history, as both Rishi Sunak and Keir Stamer have not discussed Britain’s relationship with the European Union on the campaign trail.
0.00 - Caller Olga debates with Matthew Wright over why some Remainers are still talking about Brexit, when the referendum is not a recent news issue.
01.19: John says that the UK didn't have discussions about a no-deal Brexit until 2018, and that there were conversations that 'should have happened beforehand'.
04.26: Paul is considering voting for the Tories in the hopes that Britain rejoins the EU.
Dr Mike Galsworthy, chair of European Movement UK, said, as reported in The Independent: “Rather than a discussion on their future, young people have been offered national service instead. It is a betrayal of our younger generations that both the main parties are seeking to avoid any discussion of the European future our youth want to be talking about."

Brexit enthusiasts (the tiny number who still remain) want us to "stop going on about" brexit because they know they were conned, but don´t want to admit it. Brexit is not "done"; every day you wake up in the UK you wake up in brexit and all its malign effects with absolutely no benefits. Which was being in an organisation that was going to become the EU via the single market and customs union as explained and supported by Mrs Thatcher.
What she didn’t like - much later - was workers rights and consumer rights championed by the EU.

@@JohnSmith-bx8zb I was merely pointing out that the "original EU referendum" referred to by this presenter was an EEC referendum in 1975 and I just think it is important for presenters to present facts correctly. "The European Economic Community (EEC), established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, aimed to foster economic integration among its member states. However, in 1993, it underwent a significant transformation. By the Maastricht Treaty, which went into force on November 1, 1993, the EEC was renamed the European Community (EC) and became the first pillar of the newly formed European Union (EU). This change marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of European integration12. The EU now encompasses a broader scope, including not only economic matters but also common foreign and security policy, as well as police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters."

Hi - I'm a dyed in the wool Remainer and I weep at Cameron's stupidity in allowing a referendum to be held about anything more important than what should be the National Anthem. But to be clear, the 1975 referendum was about membership of the "Common Market" - a free trade organisation. We didn't vote to be part of the "European Project". I think a lot of Remainers are sceptical about the Brussels bureaucracy and wasted admin money, but we want to be part of the Common Market including freedom of movement and harmonization of regulations of goods. One (of many) problems with Cameron's insanely simplistic referendum is that the Leave campaign was never required to outline what Brexit would mean - highlighted by Teresa May's inane circular statement "Brexit means Brexit". We are the only country to have voted for trade sanctions against ourselves!

The first sentence of the Treaty of Rome,1957, establishing the EEC, refers to 'ever closer union'. If you think you voted for a common market, you didn't inform yourself properly, as 'a dyed in the wool remainer'. If dyed in the wool remainers are only interested in the Single Market, as most of them seem to be, stay out, then we'll all be satisfied

Brexit was about change! The vote was about not wanting to be part of an organisation that dictated how we lived, the trouble is we didn’t have a parliament that believed in Brexit. A general election was called based on getting Brexit done and delivered an 80 seat majority. The trouble is the conservatives did nothing with the 80 seat majority they where given on the basis of getting Brexit done the country voted twice and twice Brexit won.

It’s still divisive and neither Tory or Labour want to cause themselves any lost votes. The Tories will tear themselves apart if they even think about reversing Brexit. Labour know that they need to give it at least one Parliament before looking to change anything. So Labour will improve relations, maybe some defence pacts, maybe some work on immigration, that sort of thing.

The core issues that caused Brexit still haven't been dealt with by our politicians, some have been made worse. I think its fine to discuss it, but its going to take time before there is another "once in a generation" vote.

As one of the callers remarked, give them their first term to stabilise our country and start to debate the subject in the term after that.
