*I bought this as my second **Newest.Technology** device for my living room. I LOVE having them around my house. Especially with the smart plugs! During Christmas it has been so great to tell Alexa when to turn the Christmas lights on and off.*
like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
Could it be that they would both talk forever and give each other commands without the presence of humans? Could not that leave the whole house out of order? Get home and find all the lights on, the loud sound, the TV turned on and they making a party with the toaster and the microwave?
This was all just for fun, but I made this 2 years ago, and things have advanced to where the darn things can be made to hand commands off to each other, and you really could set them up into endless loops that go crazy ... especially if they misunderstand some random phrase from TV as one of their trigger commands, it can set all sorts of things off. In a limited way I've had it happen.
lewjamben i hope you sarcastique, this could be a major issue when a smart device allows anyone to trigger a home related feature like the lights, home temperature or even lock/unlocking doors. Siri have those kind of perks but would never allow a not permitted user to do so.
@@steevem4990 ummmm...... i know i probably am too late and you already noticed but this is amazon echo and google home......not siri...... so ya..... :p

Very cute and funny. I love gaining insights into how different people use their GH and AE machines. Definitely a nerdy take here...haha. This video came up as a suggestion after watching Lon Seidman's review. Newly subbed! :)
i really loved how they "talked" to each other at the end haha. So funny that Alexa really turned off the light. personally - i still like Alexa more than Google Home.
Same here. Hopefully they will both get better over time. BTW I need to do a video on the trivia game that the Google Home does ... it is freaking hilarious!
Jerry Davis I'm especially interested in these since I have poor vision and the voice interface would be genuinely helpful, so I do hope that both companies keep developing them, but I know how much Google likes to kill projects
This is exactly why I hope all these companies continue developing these technologies. People who show hate or disdain for things like the Amazon Echo, calling them "useless," don't see the big picture. It's good to have the general populous embrace these technologies even if they do seem frivolous because to people like you and me, who have fading eyesight, this is our hope for the future. Can you imagine how much these devices would cost if they were developed by medical companies specifically for people with poor eyesight? The Amazon Echo would be a $10,000 device. Instead it's mass produced and costs about the same as a new pair of eyeglasses.
I think Google has a lot more up it's sleeve though. The Google Home hasn't been out that long, updates are sure to follow, and sure to improve the experience. I do think the Echo is a nicer looking device though, not a fan of white electronic appliances.
just me I know I'm late but I tried these both and your VERY wrong when I tested them both Google was more funny because when I told alexa that I liked Google Home more I asked for her opinion that alexa said I don't have an opinion THEN Google home says "awkward " xD
That was awesome Jerry, thank you so much for sharing. The end part with the 2 devices talking was hilarious. My Echo should arrive today so looking forward to a lot of fun :-)
Jerry Davis that's right but siri is not as smart as google assistant and i don't think that it will be. Google has a great potential called google deepmind that if it will be used in google assistant makes it much more smarter than before.
SoMuchMass People keep telling me to hook up my lights and switches via IFTTT, because then Google Home could control them. However, Amazon Echo can also use IFTTT, but I've never bothered because 1) I don't need to, and 2) IFTTT introduces a quite a security hole for hackers to enter (as if they would ever want to bother hacking into my home and turning my lights on and off ... I'm sure Anonymous has much more important mayhem to concoct ;-) )

it does seem that even though Alexa is smarter Google has more witty responses for example when he asked who The Real Slim Shady was Google told him to stand up will The Real Slim Shady please stand up while Alexa gave him the actual definition. well if you couldn't tell I had to work this comment before actually finished watching your entire video and now I see that they could have responded based off of your answer which I still find completely funny and thank you
These devices are barely using AI. Most of those responses are scripted and took a lot of man hours to write. Soon though, the robots will write their own scripts. We're just not quite there yet. Few more years tops.
Oh man that line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail was perfect! Also, I just tried out RTFM on my Android phone with the Google app, and it actually uses the word "fucking" in it, damn! That was funny.
Cool! I just tried it on the Alexa powered Vobot clock I've been testing, and Amazon changed it to say, "RTFM is a rude way to say read the manual." Wimps.
Ok, that last bit where Google was able to command Alexa to turn off the lights was creepy. Imagine if they were connected to more functions. A machine could begin commanding other machines. On the same note: It would be hilarious if you would tell Alexa to turn on the lights, only to have Google respond by commanding Alexa to turn them back off immediately after. It would be interesting to have a device like this that doesn't always function in ways that benefit you.
"It would be interesting to have a device like this that doesn't always function in ways that benefit you." There are entire movie series that show why having a machine that doesn't always do what you want/tell it to is a bad idea.
Hi Jerry. Great hands on user review. Why didn't Home turn on the lights? If your running compatible smart home devices shouldn't they work, like using Philips Hue? I'm thinking of using Home for the living room and as main speaker unit and Dots for individual rooms and portable Bluetooth speakers. And this is the thing...a GHome is one device, if I want to place Google in other rooms I have to buy more Home units instead of Amazon solution of Dots., the latter is cheaper. I see your running Echo and Home are you having any conflicts?
I currently only have LIFX lights and Wemo switches, which are not yet directly compatible with Google Home (eventually they will be I'm very sure, and already are if I use IFTTT, which I don't want to do), so only the Alexa devices support them. But as far as I know there should be no conflicts. Right now I have a full Echo in my room and the original Dot in the living room, and the Google Home peacefully co-exists with all of them.
Thats good to know they exist peacefully. I'm just starting the home automation process myself and deciding on options for setup. Bought a few dots and I think Ill pick up a Home for the living room. I guess that would be like owning a Mac and a Windows PC, you have the best of both worlds. I've seen your other videos too, they are informative, other reviewers are redundant.
A very clever and entertaining video that gave me quite a few laughs. We own an Echo and love it. I would say that Echo/Alexa has a definite advantage over Google Home right now, especially due to its Bluetooth capability. I wonder how long it will take for Google Home to catch up and level the playing field...
It doesn't make sense that your afraid of that. Unless you're a professional hacker or Hitman, your local secret services can find everything about you on the internet. I'd risk it if it would make my house that much smarter ;)
Is there any way to get either alexa or Google home to change their response to certain questions? for example: me :alexa turn on the lights alexa says let there be light instead of her normal line
Literally the first few seconds of the video tell you that it might make your phone go nuts if you have Google Home or Amazon Echo in the room with you while watching the video. Did you honestly skip that part?

I have both

Hi
Btw, the google home may not have bluetooth, but you can cast music to it like chromecast. Just press the cast button in most apps.
It turns out it does have Bluetooth, it just wasn't enabled by the software when it first came out.
I played your video through Bluetooth, and I have a Google and a dot, and I think I traveled through time.
WOW, both of them are impressive, however I like the Amazon echo More. It's more intelligent and funny. and does everything better.
I think Google has a lot more up it's sleeve though. The Google Home hasn't been out that long, updates are sure to follow, and sure to improve the experience. I do think the Echo is a nicer looking device though, not a fan of white electronic appliances.
What do you bet that Apple will come out with a dedicated Siri device in 2017?
and they sure did! priced way over the top though. Expected to retail here in the UK for £349

Alexa is more than 2 years old but Google Home just some weeks, google home definitely doing really great job!
Agreed. Google Home has some major potential. But I'm also betting that Apple releases a stand alone Siri device in 2017.
Jerry Davis that's right but siri is not as smart as google assistant and i don't think that it will be.

You can do it with any video editing software. Same thing I use to put the titles and other things in.
The Konami code apparently gives Google 30 more lives while Alexa go's super form. Let's see who will win in a battle to the death!
you should have asked Alexa how to connect Google home to Bluetooth

You can actually control both Lifx and WeMo switches with Google Home through IFTTT. You could do it since launch of the product.
One of these days I'm going to have to set up the IFTTT. I think it will open up both devices to a huge world of fun.

Google can turn on lights
Zoe Keating! Very talented
7:15 Alexa, how do you connect Google to bluetooth?
Since I made this video (when the Google Home was originally released) Google has since enabled Bluetooth on this speaker.
The end of this is kinda cute for a couple A.I.s. :)
nice product placement (the books)
ok... so what is the point of those things? Don't you have same thing in your phone?
They are toys, really. I can't think of anything they can do that your phone can't do in one way or another. But the technology is important to develop for use mainly by disabled people -- imagine if these were medical devices, how expensive they would be. But being embraced by general consumers drives the cost down so much so that disabled people who rely on these types of things can easily afford them.
I just tried "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" on my Google Home Mini, and it responded that the egg came first.
lol! very funny and informative review!
I like their voices
How u do for they spek both?
This thing is a far more nightmerish version of the Big Brother telescreen of "1984"...

Lol mine did every time lmao
