I saw these once on the tank trails at Graf, during the Graf '82 range upgrade. As a 12 Bravo, I was driving my 5ton thru a dust cloud, coming back from the demo dump, loaded with thousands of pounds of explosives, and these things came down the tank trail in a bigger dust cloud, they looked like something from Mars, as they just appeared out of the dust cloud, as I rounded a bend. Had to swerve outta the way, luckily, no issues got back safely. We went to the demo range in Hoenfels later on and blew up a bunch bangalores(lot dates of 1945), 40lb shape charges and some rocket thing pointed into the ground to make "BIG Holes"....those were the days!!
Very cool machine!
if you needed to cross the many deep and narrow waterways of Europe, under fire, you wouldn't feel that way. When these were made, the M60 was still in service. I was part of research and production team at Rock Island arsenal where the bridge launcher attachment mechanism was made and welded to the tank. An interesting process. If you needed it in Europe, there was just no way you could cross all these streams with tracks, or wheels, without a solid bridge of some sort. This was the way it was done. And a great idea for the time. You could proceed to the front, deploy the bridge, cross it and wait for all other vehicles came across, then pick it up and go on to the next stream. Believe you me, the other mobile units were sure glad to see you coming. You were their life saver. Don't know why you call it a waste. What other solution do you have to cross a stream, under armor protection, during combat???

Interesting. How much enemy fire protection does the bridge itself have?♨️
I thought there were some APC’s at the time, sorry, I am very lost
@@snowwhite7677 not much,,,,,,50 cal can shoot through it but 50 cal can shoot through lots of things,,,,not a tank though or sheridan,,,50 on those is like rain water
@han0509 yep a well placed bomb or shell will kill vehicles and bridges
This should carry another M60, which carries another M60, which has another M60, on top of which has a M60 and finally with a bridge on the very top

I loved it, so I DIY a RC Bridge Tank at home
Ya I cannot do that
1974 when i was at rock island and went down in the shops to see this being made, they had a big twin ring assembly like large barrel hoops. Drive the chassis in them and chain it down real good. That way you could weld the mount on the forward up slope of the glaxis plate from an easy position, then one man could roll the tank over like you would a barrel with an over head crane so that the lower was now the upper and easy to get to for the welder to do a good job. Id have not believed you could roll a tank chassis over soooo easily if id not seen it myself,,,,,best wishes guys,,,
This is Hunter Two-One, we are Oscar Mike!
They are made of Maragin steel. Very high strength and very little distortion from huge loads.
Was lucky enough to work on few of these with a non destructive weld tester as an apprentice welder.
Amazing bit of kit.
I was a 12F from 1971 to 1980.....served on them is several locations along with the CEV
Trained on avlb and cev had them n ft. belvoir , va. Where mainly used to train ROTC cadets and ally soldiers. SFC Henry retired

The world is paying the US militaries, just by printing money the FED can provide funds to construct all army needs. While the dollar is the world currency, the FED can still provide funds free to DOD for all their needs.
Call of duty tips and tricks I see you are in no way, knowledgeable about the federal budget. The military is now only a small portion of the budget. If it were cut off completely, we would still be in debt. In fact, welfare and giveaway programs are more than anything else and have increased well above what is realistic. Cutting these is the only way we can pull spending within bounds
Why is youtube recommending this 7 years later
Great British designed bridging kit.
I just saw this in modern warfare 2. I didn't think it was real but I now stand corrected
Engineers use them for bridging anti-tank ditches and similar obstacles that vehicles cannot negotiate on their own. An M1 tank may be 60 tons of death dealing, but it can be stopped by what is essentially just a hole in the ground. So when the cav scouts can't find a way around, the engineers must bridge the gap.

could you zoom any further?
It is very good
I saw one of these in mw2 on the second mission
Right! This tank is very old. But! Still does the job
I hate cod, but I've played every one, and the tank you are talking about is not the m60 bridge layer, but it is the M1 wolverine bridge layer
King S30144 1973 and that's old???? OK, if you say so
What controls/moves the pivot in the middle of the bridge? Hydraulic lines that need to be (dis)connected?
Their are hydraulic hoses with quick disconnects that plug into the bridge. Two rams in the stem push the bridge off and disconnect at the same time.
Rl Badger you sound like a 12B with B6 ASI
12F is the MOS of the operator of the AVLB, that's what I did for 3 years in Germany.
anyone rember this is MW2 ?

Yes, I was there!
I couldn't remember which one it was. But yes now I do. That's why I'm here lol..
Neat
Where's tollbooth???
It seems like most streams narrow enough to be crossed that way could just be splashed across.
It is more useful in the case of crossing tank ditches, and other short dry or wet gaps. Imagine a tank battalion is moving cross-country, and they come to a stream with steep banks with a bottom that is 10 or so feet deep and is 9 meters wide. You can't expect tanks and other vehicles to drive through this creek bed. They would become stuck, rollover, or potentially become damaged in another way. This provides them with a way to cross the gap quickly and continue moving.
I love this tank.
'
very beautifully design ramp...
what kind of metal on the ramp...
aluniuinum or steel
Probably steel
Aluminum bridge, steel launch mechanism.
***** I think Boeing made the bridge. Rock Island Arsenal made the launch mechanism, in house. No production line. One by one. Had a big jig, like the bands on a whiskey barrel that you drove the M60 into. Jigs only, no barrel. M60 was chained down and launcher parts welded to the front glaxis plate. Then M60 was rolled over with a crane so man could weld the bottom of the launcher to the tank with it being in a suitable, and easier position for welding. On completion, tank rolled over again, and drove away. That alone was a sight to see!!! HA!! Some great welders there, who cared about doing a good job.
They definitely use this to cross moats to storm the enemy castle.
How much does it cost.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

that thing takes longer than the german Biber Bridge laying tank
It was the operator it is a lot faster when someone has a little experience.

what is the funcation that they normally do
muslim believer lay bridge's?
A sun tnz was deployed? 😂
I don´t get what it is? some sort of ramp?
Markus E Basically it's a mobile bridge launcher. The bridge can clear any river way/trench/mindfields/etc that is within 60 feet. The bridge is deployed, all the other ground troops/gear goes over, then the M60 collects the bridge for the next obstacle.

So who gets to guide him to hook up in combat? ;p
He gets to practice several times before going to combat. He can hook it alone with only a time or two approaching by then

This amazing old shit and USA made
1960's high tech
yes but now its 2016
do you still use tv and telephone from 1960s?
Still in use in the US and like 6 other countries. In the desert nothing else will do. The US is taking the mounts and bridges and putting them on M1 Abrams chassis. The design is like the M2 machinegun, still works why fix it?
but its not a good design.. see how low the leopard biber brgedelayer are.. how fast you lay the bridge .. when you lay m60 bidge its more coplicated and not steady.. just take a look.. and the leopard bridge did come in 1960s even better than this.. you can lift up the bridge on each sides..
after seeing these in MW2 Remastered, i just had to see if they were real.
That’s why I’m Here to no joke

and still this bridge deployed faster than me joining a gta 5 online session

The thumbnail makes it look like a giant mechanized spider-swatter in mid-strike
"Yes, Jim right here, deploy the bridge at this completely flat land."
water usually flows in low places,,,,,crossings where needed are rarely with cliffs on both sides....all you need is reasonably close banks so the bridge can reach across and a bank on each side 40' or so extended from the waters edge so the vehicle can make an approach,,,they dont have to be level or equal in height
I operated this type as well as the CEV but this bridge lays out wonderful and fats....... whoever is in the video would receive themselves a NO-Go on the lay out of it.
I can remember being told, just keep the other end a one or two feet off the ground with a constant speed as you go out or back. New drivers would always get a jerky motion like this one. He had to just be using one control at a time instead of the 3. In place of the bridges we mounted two MICLICs. for clearing minefields many times for training, but always one would always be set up for one part of the task force training (used once, then turned into an automotive pit for working on damaged vehicles for the rest of the exercise.) Now the CEV's were fun, but as a 12B the 12F would not let me play too much with it. (maybe in February in Holenfelds after throwing two tracks while at the bottom of a hole that they dug with a few feet of water covering to the tow points.)
Brett J I miss the military life. I had 4 different MOS's: 62B which was a combat engineer mechanic, 63B which was wheeled vehicle mechanic, 12F which was combat engineer equipment operator and then my last reclass was to an actual 12B, combat engineer. Seems I spent a lot of time in schools. But then after 12 years of service I got hurt on a civilian job and after 13 surgeries it screwed up my entire military career and life.
I would say the operator of that AVLB needs a lot more practice operating it. I miss the one I operated when I was stationed in West Germany.
Are they all this slow?
@@blacksuite1 As far as when he lifted the bridge into the vertical position yes, it weighs 11 tons. But when he was laying the bridge out he was either having trouble with the controls or simply didn't know what he was doing. When I was stationed in West Germany, we had competitions deploying our bridges and picking them back up. I've never seen someone do it as slowly as the guy in the video before.
Did you win Bridge EX? I was with 10th Eng in Kitzigen 85-87. I got to play with all the vehicles. I licensed operators with the motor officer. When we'd do the testing I'd get to drive for fun. The only one I could talk him into licensing me on was the M88 recovery tank, since I was in the motor pool. Good times.
@@justken1900 Unfortunately no I didn't. I never had the opportunity to compete, our competitions were just within our battalion. I was with 12th Eng. in Dexheim 85-88. I really miss it now but I couldn't physically do it now if I had the chance too.
In 1976 through 1978 I was with the 4th Eng Bat in Germany and operating the Avlb & Cev was my job
As a small child in the 80s, I absolutely loved and wanted to get a G.I.Joe bridge layer. Never did get one. Also, I wanted to grow up and join the army to be a bridge layer operator. In HS, the recruits told me there was no such thing, so I did not join. Now at 43 and disabled, I coulda been an operator?!?! My entire life has been wasted
But why do they call it a tank though? That is like construction equipment...
This should have emerged from the pod of Thunderbird 2....just saying

Them hard hats must be for birdshit because if that fails on retract, ………..
What do you expect from jarhead operator you can use more than one cylinder at a time and laid the whole thing out in about 30 seconds you can also use it to defeat a Wall. The problem isn't playing at the bridge the vehicle is too slow it does max speed of 30 miles an hour. Try driving this tank through seoul in a rush hour. 2nd Engineer Battalion
I can tell you have never seen one in person, nor appreciate the fact that the operator is protected under armor. There is in fact 5 cylinders, one on each side of the bridge at the center hinge, and 3 on the launcher, that stays with the tank on disengaging

I remember in 1964 seeing one of these bridge laying tanks back in England, at the Tank Museum display. It was a British tank launching it, but the same type of bridge. For a four year old it was the only thing I remember from the day, but sixty years later is it still a vivid memory. :)
Please send all of it to Ukraine. Asap
Without cover fire that thing would be so screwed over
To be used with a Bob the Builder hat, even in combat.
How that can BE REAL!? What the HECK?!
And again the Germans have the concept thought out just a little smarter. The Bieber (I know) bridge layer extends horizontally so it's much less visible during troop movements. It sounds like such a small thing but it is these improvements that made their cars for example into the finest in the world. It just works and it makes sense. Not to say that this thing here isn't getting the job done but details are what wins battles. Well, details and an uncontested airspace, technological suppremacy and well trained personnel...
Cmendurite e shkences fantastike okej
I fail to see the practical use of these in the real military. How often do they have small tiny rivines they need to cross.
In wwII they used them to cross bridges that had been bombed. In modern times they do seem rather useless.
@@lorne852 oh yeah that makes sense. Lol I remember seeing them in the gi joe cartoons for crossing huge rivers kinda unrealistic. Thanks for the explanation
Tanks can’t cross a 20’ wide, 10’ deep ditch with steep sides. This is faster than calling for a dozer, CEV, or M9 ACE to cut ramps or fill in the ditch.
