Looks like TH-cam have closed off this workaround. A crying shame. I will keep fighting to try and get custom thumbnails for shorts creators!
Is there a new way to do this? How do new content creators do this today?

@@jhonyblanco9239I use a video editor and have my thumbnail in my short for a millisecond at the beginning
Still works similar. Just make it 1 frame out of 60. Most people will never realize it appearing

This reminds me of when youtube first came out and we would put a "custom thumbnail" at a specific timeframe in each video to cheat the system
No interest in uploading via mobile when I edit on PC. They need to give us custom shorts again. Very pointless updates. (I know it's not your fault lol ty guys)
It's kinda pain in the ass for having ro transfers videos to phone everytime to choose a thumbnail. But for some videos I'll have to do it becasue automatic thumbnails are destroying my views when youtube choose the worst possible part of the video to show in thumbnail 😂

It's really a mystery to me what YT is trying to achieve by making it as difficult as possible, but here's a workaround:
1. have your thumbnail ready on your mobile device and TH-cam Studio installed. Make sure it's 16:9 format (normal screen size) and not 9:16 (YT Shorts format)
2. upload your video (can be from PC)
3. open TH-cam Studio to edit the video that is currently uploading
4. click on the pencil icon and chose custom thumbnail (sometimes the UI doesn't load properly, but clicking in the bottom left corner sill still lead to your gallery)
Mist important thing is that you do this while it's uploading, because after the upload is finished, you can't change it.
They need to atleast give us the option to pick a specific frame from the short on pC like in the mobile app. It doesn't make sense to have it on phone but not on PC where you actually edit most of the shorts.

On all my previous shorts, it gives me the option to trim. So I tried this method today, and now, suddenly, the trim feature is grayed out, and it says "cannot trim because video is a short"...
I'd say this feature is only available to certain channels, but all my previous shorts give me the option to trim. So they might be on to us. Looks like they might have removed this option.
EDIT: So I actually figured out how to do all this on your phone, by accident, actually. First, select "upload short" and select your video like you normally would, but before you select to continue, trim your video, cutting out the thumbnail as you would if on desktop. Hit done and then the check mark to continue editing. Once you get to the screen where you can edit your thumbnail, hit the little pencil to edit, and you'll see that the thumbnail you initially trimmed is still there. Select it and voila! You've got yourself a thumbnail! I've tested it, and the video itself doesn't show the thumbnail, but when people are browsing shorts, they'll see the thumbnail you created.
Hope this helps those who don't want to be jumping back and forth between phone and desktop.

@ShawnMarkow Sorry! It looks like I left just a millisecond left of the thumbnail, so when you watch the short, you can't even notice it, but it was enough to recognize it when editing.

To be straight, this method can only work on phone. You can't do it though PC browser. It's quite the hassle the move the video to you phone just for the thumbnail, but that's youtube for you.

Do you have to upload the video from your phone? I always record and edit my videos on my PC, and transfering them to my phone to upload them seems like a real pain.

it works perfectly for me also, I noticed when uploading 15 to 18 seconds videos the image on the 8th seconds will be on the thumbnail.
Idk why but I couldn’t trim out content on my short. Maybe it’s cause there was copyrighted music in it and it wouldn’t let me remove it. I just deleted the short instead…

@@vidIQ yes I have. I’m able to select the thumbnail, but then when I go to trim it out it wouldn’t let me. I’m sure it’s cause I accidentally put copyright music in it tho. I’m sure I could do it if that didn’t happen.
Same, no music. Just says I cannot trim a short. Tried several ways beyond these very basic instructions with no luck. So frustrating

Just send the video from PC to mobile with platforms like SendAnywhere (google it) and upload into your channel with the app.

Why is such an easy thing not implemented by yt, also why not for shorts? Would it be so hard to give the creator a slider through shorts/ videos, so you can just pic a fitting frame out of the whole thing, which gets defined as thumbnail...
Yes, I recently created two thumbnails for two of my shorts exactly like this!
This method still works but the problem is using the TH-cam trimmer negatively impacts video quality. I done a before and after comparison and shared with youtube on Twitter and they are "looking into it"

Added the thumbnail clip to short as instructed and uploaded via mobile, went to desktop computer to trim, and it says I cannot trim a short. I have tried several times. Why oh why is nothing on TH-cam straight forward 😢

youtube should have a 2 ways to create a video, botton says videos less then 1min, the other like the normal one it will be alot easier to make.

as of 2024 they have fixed this because i can no longer change the picture of which people see it in the shorts feed from mobile
I just upload my videos from my iPad, which still allows me to upload a thumbnail when uploading the video. :)
So it is only possible when you are uploading from your mobile phone?
I KNOW HOW TO ADD THUMBNAILS TO THE ACTUAL SHORTS LIKE VIDEOS, EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS YOU CAN’T.
Or you can just varify your phone number and upload a photo ;)
Another way that is sooo mych easier: If you are using capcut, there is an thumbnail option to either make your own in the app or upload a thumbnail, after, the video will be shown with the thumbnail im your gallery and will be shown with thumbnail in yt shorts and tiktok.

I don't have the option with the pencil on the images. I can only upload a image from my gallery. And I know that image will not be used as my thumbnail. Please advice. Thank you.
