  • Draft Horse Farmer Ralph Rice takes us through his plowing process as well as a detailed tutorial on hitching 2 or 3 draft horses together.
    Ralph plows and odd shaped sized field. First he lays it out on a piece of paper. He marks the field at 25 pace increments which is the correct distance to allow the draft horse team to turnaround. He places long poles at the each end of the rows to give himself and the team a target. He explains with a diagram how to ago about plowing the fields with his right hand plow, going over the process for each row, explaining the "back furrow" and "dead furrow" left in each of the 25 pace sections.
    Next Ralph goes into the field and explains the process again so we can see how the plan works in the field.
    Ralph's 3-up team of the Percherons are harnessed and taken to the field. We see a close up view of Ralph hitching a team to the plow and then plowing the field. We then get a close up of his Pioneer Plow as he adjusts it to run smoothly.
    Back at the barn Ralph lays the harness on the barn floor to expertly demonstrate how he hitches his two and three horses"Bit too bit" for more control and more comfort for the horses. He shows how each line is attached and how each line controls the draft horse team. This is an excellent hitching a demonstration. He also explains why he prefers this method over other systems.
    Ralph explains why he puts the colts or less experienced horse, in the middle so it can only go where the experienced horses on each side go.

    I love videos featuring Ralph Rice. Grew up in Ralph’s community often drove by the farm curious as can be. He was “homesteading“ before it was a TH-cam trend.

    Mr. Rice your amazing....I could say more but I’d just tie up the chat!! I love your place and your practices. Thanks for sharing your farm on Rural Heritage Sir! I’m at 40yrs and want to be like you when I grow up.

      Btw I know nothing about plowing horses and you make a ton of sense to how and why you setup horses the way you do as well as the way you’ve setup the rest of your farm! I’d love to come be an apprentice and learn from you Sir! Rural Heritage has presented you very well and you in return have shown excellent farming skills as well as all other skills, I see why Rural Heritage has continued to follow up with what you practice on your farm. Your like my modern day grandfather! Maybe you need a TH-cam Channel of your own....? Thanks for your time and teach Mr. Rice!

    Good job Ralph, have you ever used two inside lines instead of one? I had two made up this fall and am looking forward to trying them when I get plowing this spring.

    About wearing off the skin of the middle horse he could try a ruber bit for the middle horse.

    You would only need two if you walked! You have two pulling the plough and one just for you.

    How many horsepower do these 3 horses generate?

    The horses on the ends seem happy. The middle horse does not. She's not happy. I wonder if it's because the side horses are constantly pulling on her mouth.

      The mare in the middle is not seasoned like the geldings. She is figuring it all out.

    • @jfdc8432
      @jfdc8432 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teresafarley4033 I appreciate your reply. And, her mouth is uneasy, she's not happy... I've seen horses figuring it out that are just figuring it out while not be so unhappy. Also, I didn't like it when he explained how they might get raw around their mouth but that's not gonna kill them... have you ever worked all day on your feet with blisters in your shoes? They're not gonna kill you, but they're pretty painful. For him to be that uncaring about the pain in the mouth to the middle horse is not ok with me... I know, I'm sensitive... but I've been in a lot of pain and I have compassion for others forced to work while in pain. That's just me.
