  • @jeffmoos107

    My Greenwald UGH-800 boxes that utilize the flat style key were just broken into on 3 week old machines. I didn';t even have the first chance to empty them! They hit 8 machines and who knows how much they got, but I assume quite a bit!. We just took 1 new box to try an experiment on, so we installed the box and then ran a fair size flat head screw-driver into the lock key-way, tapped a few times with a hammer to set the screwdriver then with a pair of vice grips locked on the shaft of the screw drive I just twisted it clockwise and it opened. What a piece of garbage from Greenwald and they have to know this! I have found the best coin box locks to be the barrel style and I am now looking around to find the barrel style locks that I can install into these brand new boxes I bought (machines came with the Greenwald flat key style coin box and I had no choice of lock style). Buyer we aware . . .

      We would average $110- $120 in each box, sorry to hear about your loss. Sounds like you need some sort of security system, maybe cameras? IDK if that helps anymore as the fuzz says they cant do anything even whit video. I was told the officer would had to have seen it with his own 2 eyes .. BS!
      Thanks for your input and good luck with your Machines.

      This is exactly right! We have 3 machines with the flat key, and 4 with the round, half-moon style key. Someone broke in last week and it looks like they did exactly what you say...no sign of drilling, just brute force with a screwdriver. The machines with the half-round key were left alone.

    Only foolproof way to get into it is to use a Dremel with cutting wheel to remove outer shroud and the inner lock tumbler. Takes about 45-60 minutes and uses about 10-12 cutting wheels - maybe $10 worth of wheels.

      Like I did in that video, use a center punch to indent the center of that lock then drill it out. You will drill down anout 1 inch and that will take out the little armmechnisim that locks down the lid. Pretty easy with sharp drill bit . Good luck.

    • @breakerbroke23

      No, the coin box is separate from the coin tray. My coin tray jammed up because the coin box was overfilled. Your coin tray/ mech (I forgot the proper term) should be cleaned and lightly oiled every few years or so to function smoothly. IMO.

      ESD, Greenwald and Monarch all make ESSENTIALLY the same thing, and in the same 4 keyways. The "default" one, if you do not specify, sucks. These companies will ship common number if you are not familiar with vending and gaming locks, so as to order the more secure version, keyed uniquely to you. EBAY is cheap, go at it.... but you will get the ones noone wants.

      If the drill bit pushed through ( went in all the way) then you drilled the lock out. The lock cam may need to be turned to release the coin box. Take the flat blade scred driver, stick in the hole and turn and pull on the box at the same time. if your #3 driver wont fit try a #2.

    • @ashhbennerr
      @ashhbennerr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so we figured it out. the first one we ended up drilling too much of the lock out which bent the plate in the back that releases the pins. ended up having to dremel the heads off of the corner bolts and then drilling them out to have the heads pop off. since it's a cylinder key there's a slightly smaller hole above a larger hole (like a pear shaped hole). the second dryer we ended up rounding out the top hole to make it large enough to get a bit on the center of the cylinder key slot. started drilling with a bit the side of the inner key circle and literally 2 minutes later the box just popped out. takes patience but better than calling a locksmith wanted to charge us $300+ to get into it and was going to damage the box anyways. good luck!

      Thanks BB I appreciate the info but I am looking for more detailed information. Are you still running a laundromat? What are the most challenging aspects of the business? Do you lease a store front or own a free standing building? Did you start from scratch or did you buy an existing business? Do you have any employees on site? Are you open 24/7?
      I am a retired accountant and I need extra income . I live in the suburbs of a large city. There are a few laundromats in the area but I don't quite understand who their customers are. Because all we have is single family homes and apartment complexes. Most homes have a clothes washer and dryer. If you can't afford to buy one new there tons of them for free on CL. The apartment complexes are relatively young and have their own laundry facility or the connections in the apartment itself.

    something else to consider is if your worried that folks may do this to your vending machines, use a stronger lock(they make medeco, abloy, etc locks to fit these) and well....i hope you have a LOT of drill bits for those locks to do this. Also keep in mind that this also cuts down severely on folks just having a key made and dumping the profits away from you.

    • @breakerbroke23
      @breakerbroke23  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can not just get a Key made, There are no manufacturer names or key code numbers stamped anywhere on these coin boxes. The key code numbers are inside the "locked" Box.
      BTW... I have drilled out a Medeco Lock before, I had to get into a Change Machine when I bought my Apartments. Not hard to do.

      My best advice is next time you open your coin box jot down the code and store it in a safe place, you may need to order a replacement key.

    This isn't always as easy.
    In the industry when you have to drill these out, it's usually because someone vandalized them in the first place.
    Additionally, the vandals usually break bits off inside the locks and so drilling through a drill bit is pretty shit.
    If you drill to fast you can melt that brass and make it hard to unlock make sure to take your time.
    For the older style ones like this you can sometimes hammer a flathead into the lock and twist it with a good wrench.
    For the newer style medico's though this is exactly what we do.
    An alternative is two carbide hole saws, one to saw off the outer cover/dome thing, then another perfectly around the lock itself.

I strongly encourage clients to use one of the more resistant models, or add the security sleeve that covers the whole darn meter case, electrical access panel and coin box. Adds expense per machine, however. But then, landlords get new rent for old worn out buildings!

      The problem we have in our building is that the coin boxes are full, we call the number on the machines, and the people at the washer company want nothing to do with us, claim the machines aren't theirs. So the drill solution looks to be best....cheaper than having those two big washers and dryers hauled off.

      1. The landlord runs a business. We don't know what their costs are. They can charge whatever they want as any business can. If they charge too much, they will loose business. You can choose to patronize or not. You DO have a choice!
      2- Where I live (Vancouver, BC), if rent includes free laundry, the landlord can't decide to start charging preexisting tenants for it. This would be considerd breaking a material term of the contract. If they start charging for it, they must also reduce the rent to compensate the tenant. If this has happened to you, you need to contact you housing authority to see what the law in your area says.
