Its not the monthly gym membership Dave was opposing... He wants the man to use time spent exercising every night to go drive an Uber car or deliver pizzas. I personally think its a HORRIBLE idea to give up exercise - which is so important for physical and mental health, and has important long term benefits in terms of health care savings. I consider time and reasonable money spent exercising a GOOD investment.

It can be tough because we dont really owe the money, its on someone elses name.. but morally its the right thing to do. Thanks for all your help with guidance on getting folks out of debt. However, the information shared in the call is dangerous.
For the 18k Indian Health Service student loan repayment, which I belive this caller is referring to, the 18k needs to be paid directly on your student loan and at the end of the year you need proof that 18k was paid to your student loan.
Please do your due diligence and correct this information. Loan repayment in the medical field can be tricky! Hope this information helps others.

He gets $18k each year for loan repayment. You can break that into increments of $1,500 per month for a 12-month year. Also, he earns $66k from work. You can break that down to $5,500 per month for a year. I don't see why he can't then pay $3,000 per month toward the loans. He can pay it all off in under 5 years, not counting interest of course. Still be in his 20s, making probably a higher salary. It's possible young man.
Bravo to you, also, for considering the Parent-Plus Loan, so mom won't be stuck. _Might_ consider going back to live with mom, too, but not long. That's not an attractive option, but you'd be saving that $900 a month on rent; and you could just pay that entire $150k debt off in about 3 years.

I agree you should be able to get the degree for less debt, BUT... if you increased your earning power by 20k/yr and it takes 6 years to break even, and you're doing what you love in that 6 years, then you DID make a good decision. Period. So don't feel bad and for God's sake, Mom, don't you feel bad just because Mr. Ramsey's "math" doesn't fit. I'm a BSEE, and it took me even longer to pay off my loan, but I did so before age 30. No regrets. Shame on you Dave, for criticizing someone regarding their decisions with their kids when you know a tiny fraction of their story. This really ticks me off.

"Doing what you love in that 6 years". I hate when people say stuff like this, liked anyone couldn't think of better things to do other than working. People work to pay bills and hopefully save enough money so one day they don't have to work. Nobody works because "they love to do it". I get it though, might as well lie to yourself when you don't have a choice anyway.
