    It was great to see the old Spencer Street Station the way that it used to look, and also the now demolished Flinders Street overpass at King Street in the spot where the Melbourne Aquarium got built before it was there. These are great memories which can only be re-lived through footage such as this, because unfortunately they are gone forever.

      My workmate took this footage. There's quite a bit more that I should go through. I've got some of platform 15 and 16 at Flinders St.

      Footage of the old Spencer Street Station brought back strong memories of how the station was years ago!.

    I remember trains would always slow to a crawl and stop between Spencer St and Flinders St! I don't remember the train crawling through the loop so slowly, though. Thanks for the memories!

    I've recently come across another VHS tape from 1987, from the same person that took this footage. I hope to convert it to the PC in the coming weeks and hopefully there is something decent on there. I know a lot of it is of Flinders St Station and the staff that work(ed) there.

    Ah these were the days. The city circle trains that ran from Princes Bridge station to Spencer St Station via the loop.
    I remember the comeng's ran as 3 car sets during the non peak and 6 cars during the peak periods. Also Melbourne Central Station was called Museum before the Museum moved and a shopping centre was built above the station

    • @thunderlips350
      @thunderlips350  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, and later at night the 3 car trains would close 2 cars, so only the front car was open. That's how quiet it was back then.

    It’s funny to think that in this video a Clifton hill loop train was running anti clockwise and now only runs clockwise from the city, and also now the Comeng trains don’t run in the Clifton hill loop now!

      There was also platform 15 and 16 right next door. I worked there for a few years. The Epping and Hurstbridge trains used to run from there.

    What were the stations? It started at North Melbourne to Parliament to Melbourne Central to Flagstaff to Spencer St and finally Flinders?

    • @thunderlips350
      @thunderlips350  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a city loop train that starts from platform 14 at Flinders St. Platforms 14, 15 and 16 were where the Epping, Hurstbridge and city loop trains ran from. The first station It comes to out of the loop is Spencer St Station. It doesn't go past North Melbourne.

      @@thunderlips350I thought that was Princes Bridge Station?

    • @thunderlips350
      @thunderlips350  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pasteleftDane I've worked there since 87 and I've never heard it called Princes Bridge Station. It was always part of Flinders St, though it was across the road and down a ramp. You could also get there from platform 1. Platform 14 is still there of course but it's not used. Someone made the decision that it's unsafe, feeling that the point between platform 1 and 14 is too narrow. The only trains that run from platform 14 now are football specials that run empty from there to Jolimont, after the game is finished at the MCG.

    • @thunderlips350
      @thunderlips350  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it is. That's platform 14, I used to work there many years ago, also on platform 15 and 16, and if it was a 6 car train it would be right up the other end of the platform. A lot less people using trains compared to now. At night time, the 3 car train would often have two carriages closed and only the front was used.

    Why was he going so slow through the tunnel

    • @thunderlips350
      @thunderlips350  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would have to do with the signals. I think the lights when he first enters the loop are red over green, or it could be yellow over green. I think it means to reduce to medium speed which is pretty slow. Maybe there is a train ahead stopped at the next station.

    • @scottrussell9376
      @scottrussell9376 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yea medium speed warning i think because there is two tracks going into one then after the signal would of been green over red clear normal speed

    How come they have bells as they leave a station?

    • @nicholaskolaric343
      @nicholaskolaric343 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not from this era, but from my knowledge of trains and specifically trains that had guards (or conductors) back in those days, those 2 'bells' you heard was a signal from the guard/conductor to give the driver the all clear to depart - Someone correct me if I am wrong, but this may have been used on par with a conductor using a whistle as well. Nowadays, the Driver has complete control over departure, unless stopped by a signal.
