    My mate used old carpet off cuts he picked out of skips and other such places for his back stop on his range and hung them with a gap in between each one which made it possible to replace them or swap them out as and when needed and you could not hear a thing when they hit the back stop

    Love the waffle in the conservatory as well as on the range. Saw a video the other week for a portable in the field target to check zero before taking on live quarry, they used plumbers putty, I have now made said target and it is as close to silent as possible whether using .22 or .177

  • @BionicRusty
    @BionicRusty 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Gotta be honest, Gary, I use a wooden box filled with grass. It’s as silent as I need.
    I found this from using a spare garden bin on its side with grass in to do some chrono testing.
    Of course I make sure not to then throw the any grass into garden waste.
    That said, it lasts for a very long time.

    Hi Gary I use two pieces of carpet off cuts and filled a recycling bag full of old compost as a backstop pin the carpet off cuts to a basic frame put that in front of the recycling bag pin the targets to the carpet and away you go not absolutely silent but it’s very effective
    Keep up the awesome videos

    Interesting on sleep and shift work. I worked shifts and used to finish nights at 5:45 and used to go straight to the farm to do vermin control. Used to find helping out milking and feeding stock kept me focused and always shot ok.
    Hated going to bed at 6am getting up at 10 or 11 to travel to a shoot. Used to struggle to get to sleep thinking about what we were going to or to do.

  • @stevenfreeman7798
    @stevenfreeman7798 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I don't shoot anymore but I worked nights for over 25 years and as a result was either shooting before going to work or like you stated straight after work and I found it really hard to concentrate on the shooting side of things and as a result I was terribly inconsistent plus I never had the drive to practice enough not that I was much good anyway!. Thing is if I was to tired I would get very angry when I missed and would just want the shoot to end lol!!. If I started off ok and felt good results were better but sometimes my heart was just not in it!. Looking back my work commitments were just to much to handle instead of taking things casually and just enjoying the great people that are on the hft circuit and clubs I ended up so disappointed in myself I felt embarrassed and ended up leaving the sport and lost some great friends as well!. I salute anybody who works 12 hour shifts and shoots on a regular basis some people can!!. Unfortunately not me!.

    Hi Gary, I'd like a video showing how to SAFELY clean the bore on an underlever springer single-handedly.
    I have 3 - a TX200HC, a TX200HC US & a ProSport and find it really awkward and I never feel 100% safe when using a pull through. Is there a preferred method? A safety strap or small block in the breech maybe?

    Great video again Gary. Always waiting for your next one, you are the best on youtube. Personal I use duct seal. Similar to plumbers putty but a bit cheaper here and less sticky. I pack an old cookie tin 12”x12” and good to go. Super quiet and cheap. Put thousands of rounds into mine and it never has penetrated half way into the 2” putty.
    Cheers from Canada

      Haha it is a lovely country, if you aren’t into shooting sports. So many restrictions here. Without the equivalent of an FAC, we can only buy Airguns that shoot no more then 495fps. I have a PAL, same as your FAC, as do all my competitive shooting friends. It’s a must here just to be able to shoot an HFT/FT event out to international distances.
      Thank you for responding and I wish you the very best. You are truly the most entertaining and informative person on youtube for our sport.
      Keep well

    Great information Gary, I have been infatuated with putting together the perfect air rifle for the last 10 years, and have driven myself absolutely foolish, trying to get perfect harmonics, making custom stocks, additional weight etc. I always felt like I was missing something. I used to own a Ruger Old Army "cap and ball" revolver and cast my own .45" lead balls. There was a 15 mm thick circle of lead in the bottom of my casting pot about 130 mm diameter. My 170 mm target holder has a steel back plate which was quite noisy. I fastened my lead disc to the centre of the back plate with self tapping screws. It stops everything up to 12 ft-lbs quietly.

    On live fire, I use rubber chip. Excellent solution.
    It supresses the noise and retains the projectiles whole, as it takes the energy out of the bullet by slowing it, rather than smashing it up. So also reduced lead dust to almost zero.
    It should work equally well on airgun.
    Larger chips may have pellets bouncing back? Rubber crumb might be better here?

    Teds Holdover "youtube channel" used a box just big enough to hold the air tgt cards and has duct packets in it, cannot remember the proper name its a product like clay that stays soft and catches the pellets in the back of the tgt holder so no ricochet's occur. This might work have also used one filled with old towels and other clothing that works well.

    A good mattress is probably the most important factor for a good nights sleep. It's a gamble with what ever one you choose but I've always put a quality 'Latex' topper on top of all the mattresses I've ever bought. My current topper one was from Ikea. The latex ones are usually the most expensive but are the best. I've never have a bad nights sleep since using one. Fantastic 👍

      @brynybach7741 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @garychillingworth
      Yes, Latex, I found out about latex mattresses over 30 years ago when we bought our first one. Unfortunately, due to the such high cost of latex now, no manufacturer make a pure latex mattress ( just the core of course). Cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Ours had a unbelievable 30 year warranty and it lasted 35 years unti lthe stitching started to go at one corner. The best thing about it was you never had to turn it ( a good job as it weighed a ton!) unlike sprung mattresses which should be turned every month.
      Our current set up is a foam based mattress with the latex topper, all covered and padded in material of course. The toppers can be can be easily turned, top and bottom and over. 👍

I don’t drive a train but I don’t sleep well which creates havoc with my eyes and I use eye drops to lubricate my eyes before shooting . You don’t blink much peering through the scope for long periods and effects my vision.

    Hi Gary. Sciencers actually act as air strippers, which help stabilise the pellet when it leaves the barrel. Both my PCPs shoot better with a silencer fitted. Regarding sleep. I am at the age, where I struggle for a good nights sleep. Of course sleep deprivation will affect how you perform during the day. I am not one for taking sleeping tablets, but I would like to know how to get a good nights sleep as well. 👍

    • @lindsayheyes925

      Maybe I can help:
      1. Avoid eating anything or drinking anything with any calorific value in the three hours before you plan to sleep;
      2. Whatever the weather, brisk walking for about 15-20 minutes before bed will help;
      3. Use dim lighting while you get ready for bed, and make where you sleep cool and dark;
      4. To get to sleep, close your eyes, draw breath in slowly to fully fill your lungs (until you feel chest muscles stretch, taking about 10-15 seconds to breathe in);
      5. Very slowly, transition from breathing in to breathing out and carry on to empty your lungs as much as you can.
      6. Slowly, transition from breathing out to breathing in as you did in step 4, and repeat the process twice more.
      This induces the sensations of yawning, and will send you to sleep.
      Oh... I forgot Step 7:
      If SWMBO snores, get a divores 😉
