This video gives you an overview of a complete 3D theater including: setting up polarizers, mac playback, and extra tips to get your system looking good.
I used components from the following suppliers.
infocus.com
apioptics.com
strong-mdi.com
DimensionalOptics.com
vlc.com
apple.com
the thing about the glasses he said is true. i work as a projectionist in a local theater and have used the ones we give out and my normal RX glasses to calibrate the screen and it works, but i convinced the boss to get me prescription gunnar penta 3d glasses and it makes a word of difference when calibrating and watching the movie. i would highly recommend getting your own glasses (especially since some theaters just clean and reuse the same "disposable" glasses)
Wow these last days I've really been trying to figure out how to make a mini 3d movie theather at home. This marks the end of my research, what an amazing project and thank you so much for sharing! 🙂
great DIY, especially the clear description on how to troubleshoot the orientation of the polarized lenses
Thanks for sharing the specifics, including how you have your projectors set up. Great information for those looking!
your welcome!
Chrome spray paint, wide background paper, paint it carefully all at one time and you have a huge silver screen. I created 110 inches screen, works perfectly, NO ghosting and VERY cheap.
Not at all. In fact, the very first color screens were also silver because the reflectivity is great. You may need to turn down the brightness a little because it's turned up to compensate for the 3D glasses but otherwise they are great screens. Additionally, 3D screens in theaters are used for both 2D and 3D.
Interleaved is a different way of encoding 3D for playback. Then the 3D television (or other device) take the signal and splits it up to match the device. So, it's very different from polarization.
This is both stunning, and looks very marketable! :) Thanks for sharing
No problem!
Yes. Google the company Spatial View. They have a product which converts laptops to glasses free 3D.
Yes! Totally true. You can even be a HUGE dork like me and modify them to block out ambient light. I always get 'Exit' signs reflections in my 3D glasses and it drives me crazy.

With a typical 3D projector you don't need the silver screen and realD glasses. You have to get shutter glasses because the projector alternates Left And Right instead of layering like this system.
Probably not. There are some 3D tvs that use polarization but most use active glasses. It's a different method for separating the eyes.
Yes, however, the image may appear blurry because your single eye will still see both images. I would recommend still wearing the glasses so you see one clean 2D image. Make sense? Also, FY-eye, the strongest depth cues are all monocular.
The point about setting the rotation of the polarising filters is curious. Pure circularly polarised light should have no particular orientation so that shouldn't be necessary, but maybe broadband circular polarisers aren't perfect so there's some linearly polarised light left in too, which the glasses can deal with if you get them in the right relative orientation?
@Lyndir I use some Infocus 5400's. They have a new line of stackable projectors that look pretty sweet. I would recommend them. It's good to have a digital shift on the projectors to help with alignment.
Silver screens aren't actually silver. Like ALR screens they are based on a special high reflectance surface that can achieve a big boost under the influence of the projection.
Not sure. I don't have an Apple TV. Please let me know if you get it to work. Sounds very cool!
I've been using the Dashwood Stereotookbox Plugin. I haven't tried the newest version yet. The one I'm currently using it pretty slow but great functionality.
That's great to hear! I thought that only special silver screen paint worked.
@toby16custom Your glasses need to match the format of the video. If you click on the red 3D icon on a youtube 3D vidoe it lists some of the different formats. It's kind of like music. If you have a record you need a record player, if you have a tape you need a tape player. The format of playback much match the media.
That should work. I have not tried the paint myself. I've heard that you should use a sprayer as rolling or brushing the paint on is not smooth enough. let me know what you find out!
Thank's for the tip about buying higher quality CPOL glasses. I'm sure to replace mine with 3 View.
I don't think so. They need to be pairs that match the glasses. You can test if they work by holding them up in front of a pair of RealD glasses. Each filter should make one of the eye dark when held in front and the other clear. The filters should react to the two eyes in the opposite way. If they don't behave this way, then it doesn't work. This is similar to what I do at 3:30 in the video.
@toby16custom The TH-cam 3D Videos is in Anaglyph 3D (red/cyan) this format isn't like RealD 3D sistem, the RealD Sistem use a circular polarized glasses, a silver screen and RealD XL proyector in Theaters, this video shows how build RealD Home Sistem with two proyectors conected a PC with two ways RGB out and video out, two polarized filters for each eye (right eye, left eye) a silver screen and RealD 3D glasses get it in theaters.
Which projectors would you recommend to get? Also what was the total cost of the investment to make one of these?
I'm very interested in seeing the technology. I'm booked at the moment but maybe in a month or so we can try and arrange something. I'm using two DLP projectors at the moment on a mac platform.
It's pretty easy. I made a mount for the projectors which has small screws on the bottom to level each out very precisely. You actually don't have to get them to match perfectly to still enjoy the 3D. Your brain will take up a little slack on poor images.
@Lyndir What do you mean by 'beamer'? I'm not familiar with that term.
I have polarized "GetD" glasses, what is cheaper way of watching movies with it?
All 3D theaters use silver screens which are different than regular screens. Some use one projector and what's called a Z Filter by RealD. Others use two projectors just like the set-up I have here. You can get a Z-filter for about $1,500 but you loose half your brightness. The two projector set-up is more difficult to align but results in a better experience.
Silver Screen = about $750, projectors (2x) = about $2,000, filters = $400, plus computer. You can do it with cheaper/more expensive components. This is a rough ballpark
can i mod my laptop screen to make it a 3d monitor. Side-by-side would be preferable.
i have seen a interleaved option for you tube 3d, what is it ?
is it similar to polarization
or some other
is it ok to use the camera lens circular polarizers?
Why would one eye be 'darker' than the other? That is definitely not a feature of Real3D. ---> I made a point of checking when I went to the movies.
In this particular scene he had a reverted image. It was specialy designed to adjust the projectors. To understand how it works:
Your mind resembles EVERYTHING you see from two images into a 3D vision. If you look on an object and quickly close one eye and open the other you see, that on your eyes the object is a bit displaced. 3D movies resemble this experience and give two displaced images. One for every eye. But your eyes shouldn't see both images. So one image is blocked/ unseeable for the other eye. To test the RealD 3D system: Go to a mirror wear your glasses. Close one eye. The other glass lense should be black or dark grey...
pls,,you can use polarizer filter camera?
why reguler 3D glass not working in my laptop ?
After watching avatar 2 in 3d want to watch to lot of movies in 3d with polarized glasses not with anaglyph plz can u tell any 3d player r any other solution for it 🙏
We have the 3d glasses from a theater but the others have one with red and bleu
I suppose it’s not possible to watch 3D videos on a phone with amc 3D glasses?
I've never heard of using stickers for the effect. What you need is a polarizing filter. This may come with a sticky back and, hence, be considered a sticker. But it's primary function is a filter. Where did you hear about using a sticker combo? I'd be really interested in some new method I don't know about.
Jesse, kewl video, lots of info, I'm curoius of what kind of cost am i about to get into.
what would you recomend for the projectors? something for the easier budget. I've
looked into a complete 3D system from visions electronics, and wow, looking about
$ 4,000. ( screen, Projector, Projector mount, cables ect... ) i have a LG 60" 3D tv, love it,
i want the large screen and want to get away from active shutter 3D glasses.
You know, something to wow the friends and of course, my kids
I did put projectors one on the top of other, so the images almost identical size and shape.
can you share black focus chart Image.
how much it would cost to setup a system like this?
what software do you use to play and drive the real 3 d home theater you built can you use the 3d blue ray movies to play as source movie
There are several programs you can use. I actually use VLC player. Works great for playing two movies at the same time.
Does it make it 4k
kingcabvids are you tried KMPlayer its working somehow fine for me ( anaglyph )
do I have to get a silver screen? if so, can I use the back of the aluminum foil? and does the orientation of the polarized filters matter (not the z axis orientation, which is the one you explained, but the y axis orientation) OH OH and one more question :P can I use other lenses of 3D glasses as filters?
Nice explanation of your system. The audio is very weak though.
I'm a little confused... So you have your 2 projectors connected to you computer directly (just like when you have dual monitors), instead of using a 3D video processor unit. I get it. But... so when you go to play a 3D video in VLC, how do you tell VLC to send the left stream to one projector, and the right stream to the other projector. If you could do another video where you spend a little more time showing the computer/wiring and software set up and configuration, I'm sure that would be really helpful to your subscribers/viewers.
I just spent some time looking through VLC, but I can't find any way to make it do this. I also noticed in your video, that you have separate video files for the left and right. All my 3D videos are one single file (an MKV). What I do to play these currently on my 3D TV, is I open them up in VLC (which displays both the left and right side of the video split down the middle of the window), then switch VLC to full screen mode, then I enable SBS (Side-By-Side) 3D on my TV. My TV then merges the left and right side/stream, I put on my 3D glasses and away I go. So if I wanted to play the same 3D videos with 2 projectors connected to my computer like you, would I need to somehow separate my single 3D video files into 2 separate files, one left and one right, and then play each one at the same time?
Any help figuring this out would be hugely appreciated.
You have two options, you can bring your sbs video into and editor, resize and export and two invididual videos. OR, you can use the 'video wall' feature in vlc to map to two projectors. You tell VLC to make them twice as wide as tall. Honestly, I can't remember exactly how I did it but I do know that was somehow it. Good luck! Feel free to ask more questions here. I'll do my best to get back to you.
I checked out your video - very interesting technology. I don't quite understand how it works. Love to try and demo unit if you have one available.
So if you have 3d projector that supports red and blue glasses do you need the silver screen.
Red & Blue (anaglyph) is a way of using color to separate the two eyes. If you use this method, you don't need anything special, it's built right into the color. So, you can view 3D in anaglyph on a printed page, regular projector, etc without any special tools. It's not as clean as the method here but can still work well.
does it work with all classic movies or it need to be a spécial format ? you don't need to download 3d movie with this system ?
Sir from were I download 3d video for active 3d glasses
Yes I also want to know
hi >> nice nid and instructions .. i have a question which glasses should work with one eye .. i have astigmatism in my right eye since i was born and this make the left eye do the process .. i have micro interlaced tv and i see some depth but only some so is there any way to watch 3d with one eye especially some people have only one eye working or sometimes completely blind eye so is there any hope for them :) thx again
I was thinking of trying something similar with do identical slide projectors. I got a 3D 35mm camera. I guess I could apply some of these ideas.. What do you recon?
+ArriCAT5e Should, as long as you properly align the projectors, you should be able to make a nice 3d slideshow!
what kind of polarised 3d glasses do i need to watch a 3d movie in kmp player?
Do I need circular 3d glasses or linear 3d glasses?
Can I get 3d mkv, or mp4's files to play on my WD tv live using 3d glasses i got from the theater?
I had a 46" LED tv. Media source is WD tv live. Thanks
Is it possible to DIY silver screen and how . Thank you.
Just out of curiousity, how much did the setup you show cost you (roughly) ? So 3D silverscreen, the 2 polarized lenses, the 2 projector (will any do ?) Did I miss anything ?
Nice video! I've been looking at your DIY stuff for a few months and I really appreciate the approach you have to 3D. I was wondering what app you used to realign the footage in post?
That's pretty awesome! How hard was it to get the images from the two projectors to correctly line up?
Hi Jesse, I am plan to setup my 3D home theater, I will be using Dual projector with pair of Polarized glass (Filter) in front of the lens, my question is does my content have to be side by side, or what sort of 3D content output you using. also, how to make the image content alignment, do I just project one top of the other projection.
Looking forward for your helpful reply.
Thanks in advance
any requeriments for the projectors,,? minimun native resolution, dlp or led?
Can I use the VLC player on my Mac, then use AirPlay to stream the VLC 3D movie onto Apple TV??
I have been thinking of doing something like this in my man cave, my question being however, does this convert or give depth to regular 2D video. Ultimately I was thinking of hooking up an XBox One or PS4 through an amplified HDMI splitter with the filters and glasses. Will that work without the software because I think the software would create lag in the game.
Where can I get that test image?
Hi Jesse, do you know how can I make 3D effect with a sticker and a passive glasses ? Or do I have to put some lens between the passives glasses and the stickers ?
What glasses do you use linear or circular
hi. saw you vdo , i need to know that how test or identify my 3D glasses.. i google it and found there are some combination to left & right glass.. i tried alot of vdos played online and on VLC player with all the settings done.. but cant see through my glasses... glasses works ok in the cinema but not on my computer... waiting for your reply.. Thanks
Do you output just one HDMI cable from the computer and split that into two separate cables that go to the projectors or is additional hardware required to get two video outputs from a mac? Thanks!
Actually, you can do either. Most 3D is formatted as side-by-side with each video signal squished into one half of the overall width. VLC player will allow you to playback a wall setting with half-resolution to each display. This cuts the one signal in half and sends it out to each projector. (note - I cannot remember the exact way this is done but I did get it to work once). The method I usually use is to connect each projector to the computer just as if you are connecting two displays. You may need to purchase an extra video card but, overall, it should be pretty straightforward. We just did a 3D theater for the Mt. Hood film fest which we ran off a single macbook pro. Good luck! and send any original 3D content my way. I'd love to see it.
Hey Jesse, I am from India and I just want to ask that 3D Side by side Screen I have on My PC, But how to Converter both images
How much would it cost to build a 3D system like this ? Any step by step How To details ?
The blogpost in the description goes over everything. Your big costs are Silver Screen & Projectors. You can either go big with these or get used projectors and an antique silver screen.
not really im wearing my glasses from the movies the other week and it doesn't work that well (REAL D 3D)
Listen, i don't have a 3dtv or 3d laptop or 3d monitor or projector but i have everything in 2d...i came to know about a player called "stereoscopic player" n another one "km player" where i can play a side-by-side video into anaglyph but i don't know if these players can convert the SBS video into linear/circular polarised as they did for turning it into an anaglyph one....i came across an option which was"row interlaced" n i clicked it n found that iy was like you see a polarised video....my question is will i be able to see through my polarised glasses if this video is actually converted into polarised?
no
Don't listen to Razor.. Yes, you can output anything and n any way you want with Stereoscopic Player. For this though you would need to open 2 versions of Stereoscopic player, (each playing in 2D!) - One outputting the left eye to Projector 1 and the other the right to Projector 2. The output from the 2 Players goes out separate DVI (or HDMI) outputs and are then combined in the glasses as polarized light. The player does nothing to 'polarize' the light that is a Physical Optical effect due to the special lenses. To further understand, you could play 2D left and 2D right on 2 computers and hit play at the same time.. For this Polarized effect you could use 2 Windows Media Players running and outputting 2D Left and Right eyes! (Although Stereoscopic Player is more useful and can output Left or Right eye separately from any SBS (etc.) 3D Video.)
I have 2 projectors. order the silver screen paint.. I want to paint on a dry wall already coated with 770E silver screen gray paint. .. do you thing that will affect the polarize light being reflected to the glasses ? or What surface is best to apply the silver paint.
Jesse... thanks for the great video. I have a question about the circular polarizer filter you are using... aside from quality difference, would using a circular polarized filters for a DSLR camera produce the same effect?
+Sean Kim Sorry. The filters are not the same as far as I understand.
if i play any video file that having side by side format will it work in this set up?
as a example when we download any 3d movies from torrent by default its in side by side mode. so if i play that type of movie in any media player will it work ?
we can watch some youtube videos in side by side mode ..
will this type of video work if i play direct from youtube and deliver in two projectors same time ?
thank you
why do you need two projectors?
+Luke Finlayson BC you need to reproduce the video in different wavelenghts so your realD glasses work for the 3D effect
oh ok
Hey Jesse, can you give me (if you don't mind) the specifications of your dll projector? where can i buy the polarizers (API), and the last one, where can i buy the cool realD glasses. Thanks a lot for your help and for this video.
check out the link in the description. It will take you my website which has all the components listed out.
Good ear! It's a Radiohead remix.
Yes and no, but really 'no." It does show two 1920 by 1080 images but it does not increase the resolution.
friday the 13th 3 in 3D used this tech years ago, why now start using it.$ maybe the cost but itt was friday the 13th in 1982
So why can't I use my 3d glasses from the theater to watch 3D youtube videos?
This video is not in 3D. It only shows you how to build a 3D system. You must build the system first. Kind of like a video about fixing your bike. You can't ride the bike in the video :)
This is for full-color 3D.
Thanks...
why cant you just use one projector?
@TheStudioFreq No problem. I just did a blogpost as well which covers this in more detail. You can check it out by googling 'diy 3D theater chompers"
I'll keep putting stuff up about DIY 3D.
Hey! I found on your blog that if you have a Windows PC, then you need to use "Stereoscopic Player".
One more question though, for the lenses, which ones would I need to buy? There are various circular glass lenses on this site. I want the ones that will work with RealD 3D glasses from the theater.
www.apioptics.com/product/apncp42-105g-ar2/
Thanks again.
Yeah, those should work! I'd reach out to API and talk to them to confirm. They were really awesome when I worked with them. Good luck!
thanks a lot!
sweet
Unfortunately, no. 3D works by giving each eye a 2D video and the brain interprets it as 3D. The good news is, you can still see lots of depth. '3D depth' given as the information between two video streams is only one of many depth cues. Loads of other sources of information are found in regular 2D footage. So, even though 3D won't work for you, you can still enjoy the sense of depth in 2D movies.
damn... I'd love to make this but can't afford the materials...
the 3d option is the red and cyan kind so its kinda outdated lol
how to know my 3d tv need a active or passive glasses?? it is written 3D support !
@themax75 Check out this blogpost for better pricing. chompers3d.wordpressDOTcom/2011/10/12/how-to-set-up-your-own-3d-theater/
You're looking at a couple thousand for this set-up. You can do something much smaller for cheaper, especially if you use vintage 3D screens instead of new silver screens. Really the pricing is all over the place depending on size & resolution.
you are my friend doodle
interesting!
