  • This is as far as I'm planning to take my birds training. The first race is between 50-60 miles so I think half way is ample training. Now it's time to get the young racing pigeons used to the line of flight and breaking away from the group.

Been enjoying your progress as a fancier myself. Goodluck on the first flight! Ours are on their way to Châteauroux (548km). All the best from Belgium!

Hi mate good to to see another training toss I would give them a few tosses loosing cocks and hens a Charlie's birds altogether to get them use to race day scenarios if possible wouldn't worry about them flying round a bit as there getting fitter and not tired and will drop quicker of longer races fingers crossed for next week👍

You feed them 30 grams twice a day?

No, half in the morning, half in the afternoon. It's not always 30g

Hi, I see you still haven't taken on board the little linseed trick sadly, I used it when I gave them there first tosses in the car and still when they went training with a local guy who trained a lot of lads birds for us, it just means they can pick at the linseed for ages when some are a slow back as time goes on and after a few races they will all generally most days come back together, but if you're dad or wife is not there to help then the linseed is great as it means if 2,3,4 beat you back and the others are slow the first few dont get 2 stuff themselves, but peck away at the linseed and are content with that untill all are home and are fed an equal amount, I no I keep bringing it up from time 2 time but I no it works and its so important it really is like, it's all part of a routine, and they need a routine, there still young still learning and still flying back for the food, as races go bye they will get some what bored of it and the hormones will kick in but I'm sure you have plans for that??, but in the mean time there young and are what's known in the sport as" being on the can". , and this is what's needed for short racing untill there older and race distance increases and hormones kick in, then you're plan I'd assume 2 pair them will kick in and you can increase feed as race distances increase. 2 me anything over 3/4's of an ounce right now is way 2 much.
Weather was fine, clouds where high and visibility was really good, a shower here and there is harmless, so they took twice as long 2 get home as they should have, how long did Charlie's take 2 get home ??

I've used it a couple of times but the seeds get their interest enough to make them trap. This has worked well so far. The cocks are usually all in by the time I get back, then I just wait for the hens. Been a bit odd this week as I've trained them with Charlie's and they're clashing with big groups of others en-route. Charlie's are a couple of minutes behind mine but he lives a mile or two further. Yes I've been thinking about what to do regarding motivation and that's pretty much what I'll do 👍

I should say I use the clock to time them in so I can see if any are slower and not getting fed. So far no repeat offenders. It's the circling where they're losing time...

@@howtotrainyourpigeon yes that's the great ting with ETS , u can use it for training also.
I'm puzzled why they are taking so long to get back they must be clashing an awful lot, I wonder are the south road lads having similar trouble??, Or is it more fly south road and north road birds hit then 2 often??, What is Charlie's take on it??, only ting I'd say again is 21 grams= 3/4's of an ounce and then they won't be flying around when they come back. Or fly them out b4 training early in d day 2 may be take the edge off them, or is the food 2 rich there on especially flying short distances??

@@desburke7786 I think it could be all of them. I've cut the hen's feed but left the cocks as up until this last week or do they were about right. Can't hurt to change a few things. Yeah lots of people on South road have lost birds training. I know the North Road guys have been hit by percy a lot. All these things within a short distance will hurt times.

@@howtotrainyourpigeon I wonder will these training problems between hawks and wind direction and constant clashing make you think about flying south road next year??.
I new a guy years ago that flew south road with us, and he trained all directions especially west north west as he worked that direction alot as a painter and he won plenty, he often brought them north also when we where racing cross channel from talbenny and oakhampton in Wales witch is directly east of Dublin, and sennen cove and Bude in Cornwall and then our furthest was Dinard in France, so he often had us all thinking that what direction you train means f#@+ all, suppose you're in the south road club so you could swap anytime really, what that chap Jock said about skipping this week's race, unless training returns change big time I'd have 2 strongly agree with him, lots of lads in my club used 2 skip the first race as they felt 2 Many people where only using it 4 a training toss and the bird numbers often doubled in the second week, so if things don't change this week training and trapping wise no laps of honour u have a big decision 2 make, it's hard I understand youre itching 2 finally race you're first race, please God they come better this week for you

Wouldn't worry too much all over the country fanciers having real issues with training tosses that should be 30 mins being anything up to an hour an longer from real good fanciers, keep them going now every day possible and increase the distance to maybe 40 miles atb

I’d skip the first race if I was you… these birds should be dancing in by now and if they’re taking as long as they are they aren’t ready.I was never ever happy if I ever beat move back from a training toss never mind standing waiting 30/40 mins after driving back.
I’d be devastated to be brutally honest

I was considering that early this week. I watched the cocks circle for 15 minutes before eventually going off yesterday which was odd but that still works out at 44mph into a headwind. I didn't stick around to watch the hens but they must have been doing more than 45mph into the same wind to get back when they did. I saw dozens of batches of trainers in the sky so I think there's a lot of distractions at the moment. I always beat the second lot back it's dual carriageway all the way home. Today's race was cancelled anyway so I've got another few training tosses to get them up to speed. Hopefully now they're used to clashing they'll come better. I've read about lots of birds being lost on training tosses this last 2 weeks but (touch wood) I haven't dropped one for a while 🤞. So long as they come back I'm happy for now

@@howtotrainyourpigeon hopefully they do for you.I used to train on the motorway and go 75mph home and still couldn’t beat them home.pigeons fly over fields and should be A to B and beat any car. After as many tosses as youve had they should be ignoring batches and knowing they have to get home.I’d keep training with Wooffs to force them eventually to ignore them and leave for home

@@jock2109 If it ever blows a northerly I'm sure they will. I drew a straight line from the training point to my house on google maps and their fastest route back would be to fly above the A1 but they can't possibly fly into a headwind as fast as I can drive. I think they're losing time circling. I'm not sure how to improve that.
They seemed better at clearing when I tossed them by themselves so it may be because I'm tossing them with Charlie's birds but like you say, the experience should be doing them good.
We think they were hit by a hawk this week because after the first 6 birds the hens were coming back in ones and twos all afternoon and Charlie ended up one missing 🤷‍♂

@@howtotrainyourpigeon have you ever thought of singling or doubling them up.You need someone on the home end to watch them in but it starts to make them look for home and you never lose many once racing after you do it… but it’s time consuming.
