I think he’s at his best when he has a really big cartoonish character to play because he gets to use his whole body. There’s an acting style-expressionism-where you build your character from outside in-staring with the looks and movements, and it helps develop the internal aspects. I suspect that’s the style that works best for him.
He’s a Virgo. He can’t help but to do everything as right as possible. 😉 I think it’s less about being the villain and more about being the “star”. He’s all about boosting everyone else; I think putting others in the background just is not in his comfort zone. 🙂
Fantastic Layne arrangement. And he beatboxed his behind off towards the end there! What can be said that has not been said of Geoff and Voiceplay - they are so incredibly talented, imaginative and hard-working. We love them for it. Mykal has an awesome voice. Thanks for the reaction! 🌹🕊
Mykal was an original member of the group when they were called 4thelove (I think) in 1997, right out of high school. He left about three years later for a successful career on Broadway. Because of this was so Geoff-centric they promised to bring him back so he could show off that glorious tenor range. The next one they release will be the one.
Voiceplay in combination with Disney is just perfection ❤ I was waiting for this to be done as a full song since watching their ACA Top10 villains (back in 2019 I think 😅)
Thanks for your reaction! As other Voice Players have told you in the comments, Their featured guest, Mikal Kilgore, was a member of their group '4theLove' that they formed back in high school. They added beatboxer, Scott Porter, and changed the name of their group to '4-2-Five' and enjoyed some local success under that name. Scott Porter left the group to pursue an acting career in Hollywood and Michael Kilgore left the group to pursue a career on Broadway (both of them have been very successful). They regrouped with Tony Wakim and Eli Jacobson and changed the name of the group to 'Voice Play' around 2012. Recently, Voice Play has had two songs submitted for consideration for 3 Grammy award nominations. The songs submitted are "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Hellfire" for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or Acapella and "The Way You Make Me Feel" has also been submitted for the Best Traditional R&B Performance category. We are very excited that they are finally getting the recognition they deserve in spite of being independent and working without a record label or contract. Voice Play's recent Halloween themed release is "THRILLER" and it is incredible. Voice Play has also shared their new masterpiece featuring Mykal Kilgore to their patrons and it will probably be released in another week- I won't give any details yet but the new one coming up is stunning and Grammy worthy too in my opinion!😃
Thanks for the background. I didn’t know he was in the group before. I’m glad they are getting that recognition too. They are too good not to get it. Can’t wait for that new one.
I love this one, Mykal (Michael) was one of the original members from 1997. When he left VoicePlay it was to go to Broadway where he has been successful and it was good to see him. I understand he'll be doing another guest spot for VP soon. Consider VP's Thriller, and Geoff's Imagine.
the never disappoint do they? Mikail sang with Layne and Geoff in the pre voiceplay voiceplay called four to five when they were all a lot younger he slotted in so seamlessly
I love the way they brought the conversation the hyenas had into the song. Cesar plays the clueless hyena so perfectly. Geoff hates being a Villian but he's just so good at it.
Thanks for your reaction to VoicePlay. They never fail to impress. Their releases make me smile happily. I second the recommendations to check out VoicePlay's newest Halloween release, "Thriller." It's worthwhile having the closed captions on with VoicePlay (or on Geoff's solo channel). In this case, go back and notice what Layne wrote in the cc when Geoff "roared" at the hyenas near the end.
Mykal (pronounced Michael) Kilgore was one of the founding members of VoicePlay, originally known as 4theLove, (then 4:2:Five when they added Scott Porter as a fifth member) singing1st tenor and Earl sang 2nd tenor.. Mykal joined the group for the 2020 video, Just Sing. Geoff is, of course, Scar, Layne and Cesar as both portraying Ed, Mykal is Banzai, and Eli is Shenzi. Those four geyser foggers were purchased for this video. If you turn on the closed captioning, when the lion's roar is heard, the caption reads "Meow!" thanks to Layne.
VoicePlay always does a great job. I've never seen the movie, though. Probably understand this more if you have, but still can be enjoyed without having done so. I do have to 2nd others suggestion of VoicePlay's newest release, their version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
Thanks Chris! Yeah I don’t think you have to see the movie but it makes it better. Yep I’ve got that on in the list. Ones make it for Halloween. I already had those recorded but at some point. I love that MJ song. One of my favorites.
Mykal was an original member from high school when they were known as 4The Love. When they added Scott Porter they became 4:2:Five. When they got on The Sing-Off they became VoicePlay.
@@Broomrider1492 Technically, they became VoicePlay in 2012, but didn't compete on The Sing-Off until 2013. Not sure if they made the name change in preparation for the auditions and competition, or if it just happened around the same time.
This song is the villain lion, Scar, explaining his plans to kill off the rightful king, his brother ( if I remember right) and the king’s son which would make him king. The three to the right are his henchmen hyenas. (Notice the backup vocals are “ha ha ha” in the beginning? Laughing hyenas.) Cesar is being “Ed” - the salute and the blank stare are right out of the movie. Watch it sometime. It makes what Cesar is going twice as funny.
Cesar is sometimes the under-rated talent in the group...he's the youngest, in his early 30s while the rest are mid-40s now...but he is so very talented. He's a baritone but he's hit a D6 and has more vocal agility than many "stars" out there!!! To see his sweet tone highlighted, check out VPs rendition of Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me. It is so moving and beautiful. If it doesn't make you cry just because it's brilliantly arranged and the chord structure is so lush, Cesar's moving performance will definitely get you! Also, check out their more recent cover (I think 3 yrs ago, though they did an older one about 8 yrs ago) of Halo ft Scott Porter and you will have your mind blown! I'm going through all your reactions and loving it! Oh, and don't sleep on their newest release, Thriller!
Thanks so much Laurie! It means a lot coming from you. I have Thriller in the list but just haven’t gotten to it yet. So much fantastic music out there. I could just do video after video but working full time as a band director takes up a lot of time already.
Thanks Bob. Always a treat as always. Im sure you already know about voiceplay's thriller as their halloween release. Bass gang also released Ghostbusters as an acapella collaboration with peter hollens.
Mykal was in a touring company of Jesus Christ Superstar-came to my part of the world, and he played Judas in that company (also played Simon Zealot in the same company or another one. I really wish I’d gotten to see him in that role because I am betting he slayed it (slew it?). Geoff’s slide is a work of art. He’s obviously put some time into making it that beautifully smooth. Great reaction!! Great reaction!
Well, as usual with these movies, another one I've never seen, lol. So part of the song I really liked, but the sections that were directly related to the movie were kind of just so-so. However, I always enjoy their beatbox and harmonies, and those looooow notes. I'm sure for those that have seen the movie, and are familiar with the song, this is pretty enjoyable. The whole costuming look was pretty sweet.
I’ve seen them live. Trust me when I say anything you hear Geoff sing here, he can does live. I’ve heard those multi octave jumps and dives in person. So no, it doesn’t take multiple tries. Also, his lows coming over the concert-sized speakers will make your entire rib cage vibrate, and some of those slides run right up or down your spine. Like…physically. I felt every vertebrae and every rib buzzing like I was made of tuning forks. He’s the only singer I’ve ever listened to with my skeleton. You missed a funny though. Turn on the captions and watch it again. 😉
The music video is great. Most of the line changes are great, and the others still work very well. Geoff's voice is very good for this, but the way he sings it just isn't as good as the original. He just doesn't manage to nail all of the little shifts and changes that helped certain words to bite harder and defined the original feel. It isn't a bad cover, it's rather good really, but I still prefer the original (which I have). Now, if he were to do In The Dark of the Night from Anastasia, that I'm sure he could make much better than the original, especially with the way the other guys played into their roles in the song.

Geoff doesn't necessarily enjoy playing the evil villain, but when he does, he puts his entire body and soul into doing it right.

Mykal fits with the group well because he was one of the original members of the group when they were in school. Great reaction!!
Thanks!
They are always 100% in whatever they do. Great review!
Thanks Sharon!
So much fun! And Geoff going from his highs to his lows always makes me grin! ❤️🎶
