I recently made a miter saw cabinet using those same casters and I found that I like having the wheel down most of the time too. When I saw your new cart, I got excited that you had found the same thing as me.
I like the way that you are continuously updating your designs. Thinking of new uses and new ways to do things. The Smart Kart is a very useful upgrade. Unfortunately, I do not have room for a Paulk bench but I can dream. I do have a home made workbench, with a 1220 mm by 610 mm MDF top (4' by 2'). It fits in a corner of a room that I use for storage, etc. As soon as I had finished it, I realised that it needed retractable castors. They are up for most of the time (that is the bench is fixed) but it is useful to be able to move the bench to clean behind it.
I’d add wiring to my smartcart. A neutrik locking power input, then a double receptacle on each of the four sides with one plug set up to relay a vacuum. Small vac and my quiet air compressor in the middle of the tray.
Ron, you’re selling stock in “Productivity Island” and getting the investors engaged on the ground. Someone already mentioned in the comments positioning a compressor next to the vac, things are just getting warm! Throughout the Paulk channel I see productivity and mobility like two sides of a coin, solid currency in the Trades. BTW: The plans are low-cost / high-value. Viewers that can’t see that can’t be shown! Thanks for sharing AND selling‼
I can't wait for the actual plans for the cart. I built the smart bench with the speader shelf but I like having my vacuum under the bench. I have it there with the Paulk Compact Bench. I'm still working out the Smart Station plan. I have a Porter Cable miter saw and it seems to be taller then even the kapex.
You should take a look at adjustable floor locks. The brand that I am familiar with is Vestil but I'm sure others make them. You could keep your casters in the four corners for stability and then strategically add a floor lock at stations you think would benefit from the addition stability. This will allow the operator to quickly apply the lock at the point of use rather than having to walk around to all four corners and drop the cart.
Have you thought about taking your smart shop out of your trailer and putting it on smart kart wheels? Having all of your fantastic tool storage ideas on wheels that I can flex around my shop would be awesome!
They are being manufactured now. It looks like the availability of the first run will be around Thanksgiving. The first run will be very limited, so I assume they will sell out quickly. Once the demand for them is gauged, the future manufacturing runs will keep them in stock.
When you started talking about finding that having the wheels down all the time was so bad, I immediately started wondering if you'd considered going back to normal (or even double locking) casters. Or does this style of up/down caster with the wheels outside of the footprint of the tray continue to make more sense for the system overall?
Once I complete the PS series: PSB/PSS/PSRT/PSK/PSC I will ask Chris to create a package. Currently, she has Ron's Woodshop Package (RWP) that has the PSRT/PSS/PSB. stores.modularmarket.com/paulk_homes/ron-s-woodshop-package-rwp-p23.php

Great ideas. Have you thought of a vertical storage rack for cradles for each bench top tool that can be used with the bench? I work in a 20’ x20’ garage with my wife’s car always parked in the garage. Most of the time vertical storage works best for bench top tools used periodically (grinder, sander, scroll saw, etc), since floor sq ft is at a premium.
Ron you're videos are always very enjoyable to watch...a true carpenter... designing to suit your needs..thank you for your thoughtfulness to help other people who need the spark of inspiration... everytime I see one of your designs I always think of ways to tinker with it to suit my needs... so far the trailer shop is my favorite... Cheers & God Bless... Jesus was a carpenter too..🛠
No! I am anxious to use my SS, but I am testing the DeWalt as I want to really know it for a future review. Same with the Miter saw. I really, really, really miss using my Kapex.
@@TheSmartWoodshop - Did you get rid of the Kapex? I have a new on one my "shop" that has never been used. Building a new house soon and expect it to get a workout then.
Have a nice Jet Cabinet Saw. Looking to downsize to either the SS or Dewalt. Would love to hear your opinion on which one you like better with your smart setup!
Next evolution of all of this should be incorporating the cart into the table itself, with a lift for the table, that way it's all one unit. Maybe with additional wheels, even inset ball casters would be good enough, on one of the long sides so it can roll around while it's on its side. Less lifting and less assembly, which leads to faster timing when setting up and putting the bench away. Also why hang the SawStop? Wouldn't it be easier to find a way to attach the saw's legs to the cart and secure the top to the bench, that way you're not constantly lifting the saw just to hang it from the bench.
What about spreading the slots in the kart just a little wider so that the sawhorses sit slightly lower and the bench height is still at the 36in total height? No modification needed to cutting anything, and it doesnt really matter if the sawhorses touch the ground, the plywood sits flat on the floor (when wheels are up) so no worry of flexing. There is no need to have the sawhorses at that specific angle and spread, with the kart the straps and spreader shelf arent used anyways. You could quickly unclip straps and then reclip for when you use the bench without the kart
Easier just to make an extension to the cart and roll the sawstop and base onto? Not sure about height issue but at least it would be locked in to the bench when rolling it around...
It is true, they do get kicked and hung up sometimes, moreso with the wooden connector bar. But completely worth it, both the bar and wheels in general.
Ron, how much height (clearance) do you have for your vacuum (and which model do you use)? I plan on building a PSS, and I am in the process of picking out a Festool dust extractor, but they come in different capacities (with varying height).
Ron instead of hanging the Sawstop why not make a longer cart and let it ride around with the bench? You might have to beef up the long rails of the cart to add the necessary length to it. Or if you find retractable wheels that could mount on the long sides the saw portion could maybe cantilever.
@@TheSmartWoodshop hey Ron, I enjoy you videos. I've built the compact bench trying to find out when the smart connects will be available and where they can be purchased.
Could you use a French cleat system to hang the cradles on the side instead of the way you have it now , then you would eliminate the use of the other extensions etc on top of the bench just seems like one less step to set up and take down although I do like the system you presently have going on looks great
Second comment, I work with both wood and metal. I wonder if there is a way to take your design thoughts on the bench to incorporate both wood and minor metal working operations. Could be as complex as a all steel cart based on design or as simple as a steel plate topper.
If you stand close to your bench are you banging toes into the cart? I’ve been watching and expecting that one of your discoveries was the need for a toe kick.
My two home benches have less overhang then his and solid bottoms, I personally haven't needed a toe kick yet. I don't even need the kitchen counters toe kick lol
I was in Germany when I bought you plans. I tried to get InTouch with you but never was able to fix the problem. Only asking to receive with I paid for thank you
Are you talking about the jig that one uses to make the dog holes? I think Ron uses it in one of his videos to make the tops. Looks time consuming but worth the effort!
Old news. You might not remember but Ron had a license agreement with FastCap for a while to sell a version of his bench. But FastCap owner Paul Akers is a schmuck who apparently can’t be trusted with intellectual property. That guy revealed who he really is in his “lean travel” recording where he got sideways with an event planner on one of his jaunts, and then wasted an hour of the listeners’ time belittling her. Give it a listen, it’s still available. I was shocked and disappointed BC I’ve always liked FastCap stuff. Ron has never said a negative word about Akers even though he obviously (to all of us) got the short end of the stick. That says volumes about the character of each man IMHO.
Why many of TH-camrs start to be silly?! All this stupid stuff they are doing just for the watcher mood!! Even if that stuff didn’t match your character?! What if the watcher mode changed and they want to see you naked? I don’t think when Ron put his hand on his mouth like a lady make an unexpected fart is something matching his character. Thanks for updating us on the progress. It’s like we are part of a Kickstarter campaign...only we pay for the plans at the end when it is finished.

Absolutely Smart. I love it!!
Just a thought... In place of a cradle for the SawStop, would another, smaller SmartKart for the SawStop work that would lock to the SmartKart?
When the new plans come out, will you have a set that has the cradles, tray and bench all included?

Which Festool dust extractor is shown? I want to get one that will fit in the space between the cart and the bottom of the bench.

So the Sawstop jobsite saw pro doesn’t get used much anymore? You prefer the small Dewalt table saw?
No! I am anxious to use my SS, but I am testing the DeWalt as I want to really know it for a future review. Same with the Miter saw. I really, really, really miss using my Kapex.

Yah both of the saws are the big dogs for performance in each of their classes! 🐶

Ron you have me rethinking my entire shop. With the cradle is there sufficient toe room? I’m assuming there is given you foot ware 😀

Hello Ron, where do you buy all your storage totes that are in the background of your video?
Hi Ron. Where do I go to buy your plans? I think I missed something.
Great ideas as usual

Sir, I'm a local Seattle residence. do you sell the pre-made table
Rusty, I don't sell remade benches.
Is a toe kick not needed?
The long sides overhang the kart providing an effective 33 mm toe kick which works for my size 10s😎🤙

Why can’t the kart be wider?
It would not fit in the middle part of the trailer when holing 2 PSB’S

which wheels are you using on this. It looks like you haven't added it to your website and fyi the formatting on your site is off looks like.
Check Rockler, I believe they sell these for workbenches.
Get the Parf system and you can make anything precisely with the table you make. Better than a cnc made table!

Fastcap is making a knock-off Paulk Smart Station.
Sure looks like it, although fastcap’s look unnecessarily cluttered and “busy.”
