That looks really nice. The best way to get rid of the red dot so far.
Thanks Tobi, yes I love the clean look I now have!
Nah! I have covered mine with a Fed-4 nameplate, that's the best way 😂
Thank you Matt, awesome stealth information!!
Thanks, yes I love the full stealth look!
You Leica people are funny, ashamed of the Red Dot. When I used my Nikon F2, I was proud of that camera and let everyone know I had one.
Haha not ashamed at all, I leave red dot on most cameras but for this one I like the all black look.
Thanks for the video, I always seen this done by Leica users on facebook :)
Thanks!
Very clean M’s,like brand new 😍 missed the steaming bit. It went from wet camera to dots. But I missed the frame with the kettle. Anyway, the black M looks great without the red dot.. 🙏
Thanks Ken, yes I recommend a hair drier so didn't want to promote use of a kettle. Yes love the clean look now!
If they shipped with black dots then people would be posting vlogs how to customise with a colour😂
Ha yes, people are never happy I guess but I like the stealthy look now
I got the vinyl ones from Amazon based on your recommendations and love it. Now, I will upgrade to this (once it's back in stock for the Q2). This will turn my Q2 into a Q2-P! On a side note, I am always amused when I see people so easily triggered by covering the red dot. Are men so *soft* now that they can't let this topic go without voicing their anger and frustration? Thanks for this video!
Great and haha yes, it’s funny what people comment about!
LOL - I was only approached the other day while photographing in my local New Forest (with Q), when I was asked what had happened to my "red dot". The Fujifilm owner had noticed mine was missing (covered up with potential weather access points!), and wondered if I'd removed it. Apparently he'd have been pleased to have it adorned his X-Pro3.
Perhaps Matt, we Leica owners may have missed a trick - there could be a roaring trade in used red dot stickers!
(PS. I'd only just replaced my previous insulating tape which had become tacky - guess what colour that had been - red!!)
Haha thanks for sharing, that's funny. I just love the P look so much. (You'll see in videos to come)
Hi Matt, Inspired by your channel (the best on Leica's that I found on You Tube) I have just purchased my first Leica a Leica Q-P. Could I ask did you cover the microphone dots with tape or a PVC screw cover when you had one? I have read on many forums that the Q camera suffers dust on the sensor through the microphone holes. I also read that this was mainly on early Q cameras and was shortly addressed by Leica and then wasn't a problem. Others say it still is on the Q-Ps so I wasn't sure what the best thing to do is. I am keen to avoid marking the top of the camera - but I would cover the holes if it is a good idea. Thanks in advance.
Hi thanks, I covered mine yes but people think the dust ingress is from using the macro function not the mic ports. Makes more sense, you ‘drag’ dust in as you switch functions.
For me, removing the Leica red dot from my camera is sacrilegious.
Yes I think many will agree. I leave on my M4-P and others but I like the M10-P look too much.
I never had any problems on the streets with the red dot in the last 25 years, so there is no need to cover it, but it looks great!
Thanks, me neither, I just love the stealth look!
Why not remove the Spirit of Ecstasy on the Rolls Royce? This discussion is ridiculous. Pros did not put black tape on to hide the fact that they were proudly using a piece of Leica equipment.
Yes I think to show off your Leica, red dots are great, but working pros in the past and now still use tape as they have for decades. Some people want to use a Leica without the attention (hence they made the MP and M-A without dots + all the P variants).
Some pros cover up branding on Nikon, Sony, Canon….I never saw a Rollei taped over tho. One point is, it’s not specific to Leica and yes, some photogs do it to be less conspicuous and others for copyright or other commercial considerations.
I always used toothpicks to twist off the Leica red dot. I would never use a blade to remove it.
Great tip thanks. Sadly I didn’t have any but I’ll get some in future if I need again.
I talked to the man making them on insta and he is now done i think? Also i dont think he had silver screws which id love for my M240 in silver.
In case i cant get hold of these, what other options besides silver tape ;)? Whats he vinyl ones from amazon?
I think he was waiting to see how much demand there was before making more batches. Yes before I used black tape or black sticker from Amazon.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Ah cheers Matt, lets hope some more are in stock later on then. Looks like such a good option :)
I will put a VW logo on my Mercedes... LOL 🤣
Surely you’re better to do it the other way around. It would be like putting a Sony badge on a Leica. Better with no badge at all. :) .. I know some car guys debadge there nice cars for the same reason as the Leica people but as I know it’s only for the fancy models so people don’t know the engine size etc.
Law of unintended consequences…. By eliminating the logo you garner more attention. The curious will stare to guess the brand. Those in the know will assume it’s a Leica. Do Hasselblad users cover their logos?
Thanks yes , I did it more for the looks as I love the P model styling
Hi Matt. Which size dot is the m262
I didn’t check I just write and said M262 dot please. They are on Instagram @screwforleica
Hi stranger, question for you. Which came first, the red Leica dot or the red Nikon line that started with the F3 in 1980.
Nikon started red stripe the Nikon F3, back in 1980. Nikon has since incorporated an iconic bit of red into all of its camera designs, purely for brand recognition whereas the eye-catching red circle of Leica was originally emblazoned with the word Leitz in script when it first appeared on the Leica R3 in 1976 and the first production run of 100 Leica M4-2s in 1977.
Hi, Leica M4-P came out in 1981 I think so very similar time!
I took the knobs off my IIIa so no one would know it's a Leica.
But now I have a new problem...
Haha sounds like my Leica ic with no viewfinder and no rangefinder :)
Fellow simpleton here: I appreciate you posting your tragic story, Emily, because it helped me avoid a similar, and in my case, fairly predictable outcome.
Here in the UK it's an additional £200 to buy the Leica M11-P, basically an M11 without the red dot.
As far as they will find stupid people to buy them, why should they stop… euh… I hope you resisted to the tentation, now you have a cheaper way :)
Great that's a close price than I've seen, I'd always get the P in this instance.
I wonder if a SL2 red dot can be replaced or not?
Check their website, I don’t mind the dot on my other cameras, I just like the M10P look here.
I was the brink to order two of them, but 50 $/ piece is really over the top for a piece that would cost under 50 cent in production
Yes not cheap for sure. They get powder coated etc I understand but still much cheaper than P cameras (or conversions)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComI ordered one for my Q2 which was fine but found the 20 dollar postage to uk quite expensive for a basic stamp payment for a normal letter. I used to buy stick on stainless steel buttons from a quy in the states who also did buttons with Leica white on black but don’t do them anymore as Leica threatened him with legal action. He didn’t charge that much for postage. Thanks for the video.
I love my Red Dot!! No way i would remove it.
Yes most people love the red dot, this is for those that love the P cameras without.
For people wondering why people started covering the camera branding "on the street", it has nothing to do with it ot being attractive to thieves or being noticed by people. It came from old photojournalists so it wouldn't show up on reflections. Like with most things pros do, amateurs copy it without really knowing why. Just like gun guys seeing special forces using very specific mods and copying them without really knowing the real reason for a bit of tape or an elastic band. In the end, if you like it do it. These look far better then a bit of gaffer tape.
Thanks. I did it as I love the M11P look so much
I do it to stop my camera being attractive to thieves. Same reason I go for all black cameras (prefer it to black and silver anyway).
Leica played a part back then, too. Way back in the day photojournalists liked black cameras. A pair of silver cameras was like waving semaphore flags. Black was much less conspicuous. Most news people used at least one let's back then. The only black Leica was the super expensive, hard to get MP. So people taped their M2s all over with electrical tape. Now, we have this dot/no dot silliness. And now virtually nobody who has to make a living uses Leicas, which I find lamentable.
@@carlseibert9015 Leica's are very expensive and that puts most people off. Also other cameras have features, not least autofocus that many people find essential. I much prefer manual lenses myself.
@@creative_cozmic if you think covering your dot is going to save yourself from a thief I've got a bridge to sell you lol
Will this make me a better photographer? 😉
Absolutely not but having a nice car doesn't make you drive any better. People still like nice cars ;)
Just kidding Matt
For those of you who use a Leica M that doesn’t have the red dot logo, or even those of you who cover up the logo, if a stranger approaches you and asks if that’s a Leica M camera, just say that it’s a cheaper Chinese copy, that’s what I say, which always kills off a potential conversation leaving me free to get on with my photography.
Haha I enjoy chatting to fellow Leica and film shooters. I always say hi
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It’s different when chatting to fellow Leica owners; my original comment was about lay people, not everyone who is aware of Leica is a pro or amateur photographer. By the way I admire your knowledge on photography, and you come across well; even though fashion and portrait photography doesn’t appeal to me.
We are of like minds, ye who repels gases... diversion is a great tactic in suspect situations. On the other hand, as Matt says, when someone approaches in kind to share the experience... then I have never met a stranger. But I am very happy to be a Leica owner and could not care less what anyone (who is being rude) thinks about my camera or any other aspect of my being. We are very fortunate to have any of these cameras, Leicas, Nikons, Canons, Sony, etc. We have the right to enjoy our good fortune and share it with others. For my part, I am far more likely to go out of my way to get one of my pics to a simple, lovely person than a poser.
I lost my RED DOT off the 50mmf2 Summicron lens in a smelly market in the Philippines -- but camera still takes Good Clear Snaps -- ----
Sorry to hear, yes sometimes you find old lenses without dots
Nice find but none for M8, M9. You got yours for an M262 so I would think it would work on an M240 but do not see it listed on the website. I'll wait a bit.
They will do more I’m sure if people are asking.
Now you need the black on black peak design anchors to complete the job
Yes! I’ll order some :)
Omg using a knife? Why not a heat gun? Is this the brass screw dot?
I'll stick to my non destructive washi tape. It's my outdoor ritual😅 To each their own
Yes it's OK if you are careful but someone suggested cocktail sticks which sounds a great idea for future. Yes I didn't have the usual hair drier so I had to get creative. (Yes brass dot*)
This one is much stealth than any other leica M P series, without logo engraved, without red dot logo, this is nice. But much expensive than buying the black dot logo or buying another red dot logo in ny country. 😢 But thank you for sharing information about it.
Thanks, yes I like it but yes not so cheap.
Oh Matt so in sync……Whilst I have ordered a couple of these after seeing them on an American you tubers channel last week good to see you give them the thumbs up. However, I’m still a bit worried about fitting them as it appears they are designed to brass after a while……additionally, not sure how easily the Q dots come off as I assume no hole below…..Can you confirm if anyone has fitted one of these to a Q without a problem? Thanks for the help Ken.
Hey Ken, great. Not sure about them brassing, they are powder coated. Sorry I don't know about Q cameras but it should be the same process I guess.
I bet this one is cheaper then your M10-p conversion 😀
Yes much cheaper! Haha
Not available for the M8 or Q??? 😂
I think it is quite a new company so they started with the current/ newer models.
I still took your suggestion for Amazon stickers. Paid 5.5 Euro for 20xblack and 5.5 Euro for 20xsilver 13mm stickers.
Great! Stickers are the best value for sure!
Too bad Leica isn't consumer friendly enough to just offer the non "hey look at our ugly logo" look on all their cameras without charging a premium
Yes with the film cameras after the M7 they went back to the less flashy MP and MA ..but the M6 re-issue was brought back for dot lovers.
Tell us about your watch Matt!
Ha thanks! I think I was wearing a Seiko automatic. Not super expensive and nice movement / look. I replaced the strap when I got it.
Is the main reason for removing the red dot to quel theft? I don't think it will. Thieves will try to steal any exposed camera no matter the brand. You conduct
one of the better You Tube photo channels.
Thanks, no I just think it looks nice without. I love the love of the P models but the MP-240 is black paint and I didn't want all the brassing so I got the M262 instead and removed the dot.
Great idea Matt! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks no problem!
Wouldn't it be easier to stick fabric tape) as Henri Bresson did
I think over time it went from tape, to black sticker dots (last video) to fancy dots (this video).
Servus Matt✌
Lg Anderl
Thanks! Yes for black Leica iii I use Luigi half cases or small wrist strap
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom you also had the iif or iiif with strap
Argh! You steamed your camera! 😱🏴
I cringed a bit as well. Judicious use of hot air from either a hair dryer or a heat gun on a low setting would be safer than steam.
Only for a few seconds and just over the dot. I don’t own a hair drier
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for producing all the content btw Matt! I've been watching a lot lately 🙂.
You don't find black dot anywhere anymore because Leica went after them and told them to stop. I wonder if Leica will go after this too
No, because the Leica logo isn't being used.
Yes u know the black Leica fit were a no no so not sure what will happen here.
Not sure if steaming your camera is a good idea as far as moisture getting into your camera. Just peal tape off and use isopropyl to clean off residue.
Yes I note on the screen use a hair drier if own one.
Just buy an M11 Monochrom or M11-P. 😊
I get my M10 back soon, stay tuned, it’s looking different ;)
I thought that the only interest for having a Leica was this f… and expensive red dot… so I was wrong ? :) !
Haha sooo wrong! The interest of having a Leica is once you use one every other camera you pick up feels like a crappy toy so then you are stuck with Leica for life :). ..Hasselblad and film cameras being exceptions!** :)
So to avoid being noticed by thieves I disguise my cheapo M10 to look like a considerably more expensive M11-P? But for the average owner shouldn’t the boutique $1000 camera bag and safari suit go first? 😂
Haha I just said it looks pretty. I love the look.
Why not painting black the front metal ring of the lens? That will complete the job. Or just don't buy a Leica.
Man, some people really want to be here every week even if they have NOTHING intelligent to talk about.
Thanks for your thoughts. These are actually really popular for those interested hence making the video (they'd sold out before I even finished the video). It sounds like you have other interests so this wasn't for you.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom On the contrary. Your Witt & humour are excellent. I like your input. It tickles the mind. The upper level minds, though.
Keep on sharing!!
I'll use the stickers. Easier and cheap at 100 for $5.00. Removable at any time too.
Yes cheap and easy solution!
Attention camera thieves: Steal only black cameras! They're a treasuretrove!. LOL!
Haha thanks Michael
Sacrilege! 🤣…a good look though
Haha yes and I know right!
Actually, I’ve always disliked the authentic screw heads and never bought the P series for that reason alone
I could never understand why Leica put such an ugly sticker instead of the red logo one
Interesting.. I guess that’s what makes life interesting. We all like different things.
Deranged comments incoming
Haha yes I’m ready
Sorry but I don’t see the need to do this. I’ve been using a silver M7, MP and M11 without any problems.
Nice cameras, stay tuned for one of them! ;) Yes it's all personal taste I guess
Or he doesn’t live in the UK 😂
Why do people think a tiny red dot is what's going to give them away as photographers and not the fact they're aiming a camera at random people in the street! 🤷🏽♂
In this instance it was more because I love the look of the black Leica P models with the screw head front (but yes people still know it's a Leica ofc)
Who cares how a camera looks
Everyone!? :)
I do!
You cared enough to click…?
Hi Matt Does they have some other models instead of the false screw ? À mignon (cartoon character), a red smiley smiling, a yellow Nikon pins, an orange pin saying « I f… Sony », a « middle finger pointing to the sky »… they could develop the concept a false screw is so sad… :).
Thanks Phil, I know people have those designs as their shutter release buttons designs but I've not seen them for the dot covers. They just made a copy of the actual Leica design which is not sad at all, its pretty smart.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Him honestly I do prefer red dot … I didn t spent a lot of money to not showing it :)
