READ THIS -Hi y'all. Thanks for being here and taking the time out of your day to watch this video - I have a few things to say before you leave a comment
    - Here is the Remake of this video, its more concise, condensed, and edited better - th-cam.com/video/IUcPqoXQKsk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=CnmpEawlik5FiAtg
    - Sorry for the terrible audio levels and poor editing, I uploaded this video when I had only 70 subs, and no idea on how to edit a video. I did NOT expect this video to get more than a few hundred views let alone over 100k
    - Some things like link rot I Intentionally left out of the video because as someone who has spent time in the IT industry and endless hours doing internet research on many many topics, I see it as a natural process of the internet and there will always be link rot in the same way there will always be old phone books full of defunct numbers. I don't see any conspiracy behind it.
-There are some things that could have been elaborated better, like wayyyy better. These things are explained better in the above link.
    - The voice filter on Ogbymocho did not come from my end lol, that was a filter used on his end from discord nothing i can do about it now. The filter isn’t to hide his identity from you, we have mutuals who don’t need to know. Stop telling me pitching up a voice doesn’t actually hide it. We know. We’re not hiding from the FBI lol.
-okay thanks, have a good day.

I hate link rot. It reeks of lazy web journalism, where people who write articles just throw their website content up there, and don't give a crap if anyone ever actually clicks on the supporting links.

A lot of the dead internet theory isn't really covered, it's not just about bots, but also Link Rot (links that no longer lead anywhere); the dying out of private websites and the push for big corporate and media controlled sites; Google being a Potemkin village (loss of millions of search pages and now hyper focused algorithm results); general loss of information / media (which web archive / wayback machine is combating), and then some of those "good bots" really just being hyper focused on algorithm for adware by larger companies.

I think the terms are just incredibly loaded because of slang and the original intent of the "theory" was lost somewhere by just feelings from general 2016 context, election year, heated misinformation, and then further compounded by emotions by recent AI developments. People probably just saw those really bad scraping youtube videos that just pull from reddit with text to speech and just thought to themselves "yeah, the internet really is dead." Then people saw this, misunderstood, and took it to exaggerated heights. Yes, the internet is "soulless" now with a huge growth of all of those mentioned activities, however the amount of content by real people itself I'd argue has exploded and is even more plentiful than ever. It's just that people are so sick of the bad stuff that nothing short of a miracle can change that perception. The theory itself is sort of proof of that because it poisons your entire world view. "What, get into trading? Why would I do that it's all overrun by bots lol." "Why should I be an artist if ai art exists?" when in reality there are plenty of valuable reasons for doing those things.

I think the original theory proposed that "a significant portion" of internet traffic are bots, but as time went on, people took it further and took it as everyone is alone on the internet surrounded by bots, which is obviously not the case.

    • @CW0513
      @CW0513 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think overselling the theory is part of denying its existence to begin with. Same with any modern problem, especially in the realm of modern politics.
Ideas these days start as an interesting concept or theory that holds at least some amount of truth. This truth proves to be threatening to some larger group or pre-existing idea, and so it needs to be stopped. Simply deleting it would garner more attention to it via the Streisand effect. So rather than removing it outright, the idea is straw-manned. The idea gets blown out of proportion until it's a hollow shell of what it once was. Making it much easier to dismiss, and even disavow anyone who even mentions the original idea.
Take biological sex for example. Trying stating that men have male parts and women have female parts in any western accredited university. Even with the proper context, you'll be torn down, berated, possibly even expelled or fired, and labeled as a bigot despite saying something that's biologically correct. Socially speaking that means something else entirely and might actually be offensive. But even under the assumption that you're not trying to be an asshole, you'll still have people crawling up your ass about it ranging from room temp IQ students to senior superintendents.

Last I checked, the original post was still up on a static site. You're right, but this is what happens as a schema is propagated broadly: it becomes picked up by more people whom, regardless of their own understanding/comprehension ability, oversimplify it to a level palatable to the normies, for lack of a better word.
That's no bad thing, though it's a mixed blessing. Lowest common denominator, as I believe was mentioned in the video. It sucks, like the deterioration of information through a game of Chinese Whispers aka Telephone but played at a cultural level.

I don't think I ever assumed dead internet theory was benign. But as an oldie, the more recent cleaving to content generation and algorithms is concerning because people who create content they care about won't get the traffic directed to them, so their projects die, while AI generated clickbait gets it all. What does that do to us?
If you're old enough think of the internet at the height of geocities, when everyone had a website and the internet was full of weird stuff. We will never see the like of that again if things continue the way they are, because the breadth of natural human eccentricities and special interests is actively discouraged by the algorithm. You no longer choose what you see, it's chosen for you.
Rather than Dead Internet, perhaps we should redefine as Stepford Internet, because the real human people that are left on the internet only create content that is formulaic and predictable, and so they resemble bots and AI, because that is what they are competing against for an audience.

This is what I think many people miss. A huge portion of internet traffic (including comments, etc.) are increasingly coming from bots. But that's not the worst of it. Instead, it's that automated systems are curating almost all interaction online. Even the fact that I saw this comment to respond to you was curated, automatically, by one of google's backend services. Genuine human interaction is becoming a luxury online, because whether or not you can even find a person to interact with isn't entirely up to you.

yes. half of the actual theory was suppose to be about attempted searches being heavilly curated by algorithms so you can never find anything beyond 3-5 main sites, prioritized advertisements, and whatever was "personalized just for you" with no regard to whether or not any results would actually be useful or relevant to what you're actually looking for. you will rarely ever actually find anything new and insightful, definitely nothing outside your region, and sometimes it's hard to refind something you already found. and this is without taking any political biases into account

i think people have been noticing this for a while because at this point, it's not subtle.
i agree. to be on the safe side, indexing/aggregating all the engines is probably a good start. just like, i believe morning brew? does with the news websites. trying to find undiscovered/forgotten websites is more scary. there's some bad stuff out there, even on the surface web.
i think there's actually people building their own search engines. never looked into this since i'm fairly confident i lack the means to even try. my previous suggestion does seem more accessible, though. at its simplest, you have the user enter a search query and shoot it through some selection of multiple engines. so simple i wonder if anyone's actually done it. the trickier thing would be building-up that index. a large public service has to collect data in some form. which means privacy regulations. [which are great, they need to exist] something local that doesn't phone home is a bit different. but less effective if the results from a wider collective of users aren't aggregated at some point.
ah, i should totally be contemplating all of this at 4AM instead of sleeping!

In terms of information our brains are only connected to the outside world by nerves and a small ammount of information gets to ith through blood vessels.
There is a limit to how much we can actually know about the world beyond our skull cavity, and the rest is based on assumptions formed by our experience.
Asumptions formed by experience are not reality, so if we see those assumptions as what they are, can we realy call that derealization?
All I know about my own nose I know only because my nerves carried signals to my brain.
If I don't assume those nerves do not decieve me I can not be sure if I even have a nose. Other people are much further removed than a mid face body part.

I think that the Dead Internet Theory is a natural reaction to the observable decline in the online experience as a result of various corporate entities in whom ownership of most of the platforms and infrastructure had been consolidating over the years, but who had mostly functioned as benign rulers up until then, all engaging in various forms of enshitification around the same time. It was only ever intended to explain the how behind an evident what, so expect new theories to replace it if it fails to reach widespread acceptance.

The study only talks about harm to businesses, but there's more to life than profit. The web has replaced core parts of society, so any problems with the web ARE problems with society. Also, bots are written by people. The issue isn't about whether interactions are fake, it's about HOW FAKE they are. Like, if you're being served a bunch of YT shorts that are just videos of someone cleaning a carpet with a voiceover of a reddit post, does it really matter if that content was made automatically? It's trash either way!

weird, i thought "dead internet" meant that less and less webdomains are in the hands of individuals and more and more big websites / social platforms likeTH-cam, Facebook, Twitter, AliExpress, Amazon, Netflix... i rember there where loads of p2p networks in begin of 2000 but somehow people lost intrest in favor of convinience... hence the internet is shrinking towards corporate space.
This bot thing is only emphesizing the shrinking

You are correct. This video just focused on bot activity. That is good information, but claiming that it invalidates DI as a hypothetical concept would be straw manning.
The other major issue is what's known as "link rot." It's becoming problematic especially for such as wikipedia, for instance. Many articles reference sites that are no longer available, which undermines the point of using references and the fundamental utility of wikipedia ultimately.
Content farms churning out LLM articles are also becoming prevalent very very quickly. Of course the major issue here is that automated text generators have already begun referencing text generated by other automatic generators. This is just another facet of the DI central thesis; the Internet appears to be turning into a monolithic self-referencing algorithm that steadily overshadows individuals with unique ideas and media to share.

Also, the internet is constantly trying to sell you stuff, Google displays not information about what I searched for but sites selling what I searched for. This product are the lowest quality possible. Plus that the main way of interacting with the internet is through a few websites or apps. Came from the dominos vid, this one's pretty nice as well, I'll have to check out those others, but I'm already liking this stuff, too bad you're at 169 subs.. I don't want to fuck up that number.. though I want to know when the next upload will be, the dilemma

So it isn't that everyone is a bot, it's that everyone is surrounded by bots so we are all islands...

Brugh, and here I am thinking I would learn something new. The sensationalist thumbnail and opening is severely misleading. Not everyone is a reddit soiboy you know.

I feel like it's more accurate to say "Certain Websites on the Internet are Dead" but the whole Internet is a huge stretch. It's not hard to notice a bot and to find a huge amount of them. Look at any online videogame and you can see how Botting is just common amongst none monitored areas. But if you stare to long into the bot abyss it'll definitely cause paranoia over all your encounters on the Internet. Even certain phrases and online habits start to stick out more once you start to notice Botting and where it's used. Even now in TH-cam comments and probably even in your own video comments therebis at least one bot. That's all it takes to make someone reasonably suspicious of all things on the Internet. Not saying there's a lot of bots just saying the paranoia of bots being everywhere is entirely justified just by the meer existence of botting. Especially if any particular bot gained a lot of information or accomplished it's goals. I can go on a Dating App right now and just see all the Bots but that's primarily the places Bots would be since it's after my information. So on those Dating Apps I'm not being paranoid that's just a hard fact 90% of the accounts are just bots. If I play games online probably like 20% could be bots? But I hope you get what I mean. They're not EVERYWHERE but they are everywhere....

More than dead internet, it feels like everyone has reached their personal information processing capacity and settles into their own network, all while the bots are gaining more information processing caps and being deployed to the biggest network.
There's no dead internet in, let's say, discord. The community is pretty vibrant there. Some of them at least. Feels like back at geocities era but more regulated 😊(balance is hard tho)
