    thanks for posting....be interesting to see how this first season goes. New regs need to be promoted on tv, radio & all newspapers - open info forums be useful too so people can ask questions..esp as not everyone is on social media. Its all about informing & protecting our whitebaiters & to avoid confrontations at waters edge

      Yeah - agree. I ran this video past DoC before I posted it to make sure I got it right and I know they are working on some material to release.

    It will be very interesting to see how a set netter will react when a scooper comes along and fishes in between both of the set netters. I can see some big arguments ensuing.

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if that will change too much - scoopers could do that already (although most would have more sense on the types of river I fish).

    • @aaronjeffries3383

      Already do that all the time no arguments yet.

    One rule that hasn't been changed,and you would think it would be the first one that would be changed is the Sale of whitebait.
    No other fish including eels can be sold, Amazed none of the previous comments have mentioned this.
    Get enough for your family and that should be your lot!!!.

      That's a good point. We get a few kgs each year - keep a bit for ourselves, give away a bit - and that suits us. For others though, it can be a important source of income. And for those that can't go fishing, they wouldn't be able to get their hands on any unless they know someone who would give them some (like my Mum). So its not black and white, but yes, there are a small number out there who wouldn't be too affected if they caught a few less kg each year. It will interesting to see the affect of the shortening of the stand lengths on the West Coast next year.

    I've always been told that if you use a screen on your fishing gear you must not have water in-between the screen and bank as in a gap. I can't find that rule anywhere. I just mainly do it because they come up the sides 🙂

    Why Oct. 30th? Does not make sense. Why not say that the last day that you can legally fish is the last day of Oct.. Then everyone "will" know that you can fish all of Sept. & "all" of Oct.. Simple. Now, you have complicated the whole process by adding complexity. There "will" be confusion. Life is difficult enough without adding more "complexity". Soon we will need a Degree in Fish Management just to go fishing!

    Tell me how doc can do further evaluations when here on kaituna in plain sight of bell road Bridge and many other places whitebaiting has been happening for last six weeks with opening tomorrow. Don't think they could catch a wounded elephant in six foot of snow

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really is a shocker - I'm guessing that since it has been going on for six weeks that its got nothing to do with the change in the opening date, because even under the old opening dates, the season wouldn't have been open 6 weeks ago.

    If anything they should do something about the farming waste leaking into the rivers then they'll be doing something properly but as for now .Thanks for the update

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I reckon the reduction in breeding areas over time has a fair bit to do with it.

      @@fiordlander did u mean construction. farming is bad man I worked on farms for over 20years and I can take u to some nasty rivers ruined from a few chems. Farming has been destroying for far longer. a river is a farmers everything depending on location. But could probably say where both right in some way or another haha cheers mate

      Yeah, I reckon you see it on the West Coast where a lot of the adult habitat is still intact and the populations are healthy. Some other places not so much...

    What’s the definition of set when talking about setgear

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it is any fishing gear that is fixed in place (i.e. not moving).

    Excellent vid thanks very much, One question I have, if you are on the east coast and you fish from a stand. Can you block off the area out to the outer edge of the stand and then run the screen out from there or should water flow under the stand unimpeded by netting or other obstructions? ie do you have gap of water between the shore the start of the screen or can you block off the area under the stand. Hope this makes sense.

    • @deborahdupain5962

      Yes fisherhunter66 I would also like to know the answer to this question. Great video Thanks

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This from DoC:
      "If I understand this correctly, the ‘blocking off’ part of the equipment being used would now be unlawful if it is not a screen. The only lawful diversion structure is the maximum 3m screening itself.
      It is a different issue, however, as to where the fishing gear (screens and net) is placed relative to the water’s edge and any stand. Away from the South Island’s West Coast there is no specification in the regulations as to where or how the fishing gear must be placed, just its size/length and a 20m distance from features like culverts etc."

    Great video mate 👍very informative I think it's a great start I would have loved to see some catch limits but I'm happy the kids and I can still enjoy a free day on the river catching tea. Ps good game in the weekend all the best for the rest of the rugby season 👍

      Ha! That's hilarious.
      Even though I've watched a heap of your videos, I didn't even recognise you. But that's on me, I'm terrible at remembering faces.
      Yeah it was a good game. Unfortunately the boys went down again on the weekend, but only by 4 points this time.

    Do you know what the regulations say regarding standing outside a set net? I was told today by a DOC ranger I was allowed to do it, as long as From where i stood to inside of the gear was no more than 6 metres. But then he said "I'll ask you not to do it".
    If it is within the law, how can he ask me not to do it?

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mahebourge,
      I passed your question on and got the following response:
      "The regulations don’t define a person as part of their fishing gear (I doubt a person would be regarded legally as a ‘thing used or being capable of being used for the purposes of fishing for whitebait’). Nor is a person a screen as defined in the regulations, even if they were attempting to act as a screen.
      In summary I think where a person stands in relation to their set net is not constrained by the regulations. It would be up to a Court, however, to rule definitively on this matter. "

    • @fiordlander

      Yes - as long as you are not standing in a boat while you are doing it.

  • @benhillier5949
    @benhillier5949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the 3m screen rule, does that mean 3m of screen in the water? or 3m of screen whether they're in the water or not?

    • @jerrybow8779
      @jerrybow8779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3m in the water

    • @fiordlander
      @fiordlander  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This from DoC:
      "The 3m of screens is the gear being used to fish. Most whitebaiters try to keep as much of the fishing gear in the water as possible to be effective. But it is still their fishing gear being used even if the tide has exposed some of it. In the end it will come down to what a ranger would determine in the field. I would recommend to be safe to count all the gear being used/set, whether in the water or not, as part of the 3m screen requirements. Put another way; what was the additional screening there for if set and out of the water?"
