Hello Jeremy, I have bought a number of your DVDs and particularly like the Alan Peters one, I think this showed him in his best light and was a real tribute, I did wonder why contributions from his ex makers, Steve Hopper and Keith Newton were missing, was it due to time constrictions or were they unavailable at the time? Keep up the good work. Regards, Mark :)
Hello Mark, thanks for your support and encouraging comments. The original film was made on a shoe-string budget and in my early research I naturally found out who was who and they were mentioned in the film and book I but was unable to find contact details of these two apprentices. Robin Furlong was approached but I recall chose not to appear in the film. It is only recently because Keith Newton and myself are judges of the Alan Peters Award at the Cheltenham exhibition, I was able to ask Keith for a contribution to the e-book version and a chapter called 'Inside perspective' that I am now working on. Please be aware its not easy getting people to come forward with information but also the book aimed to be representative and as inclusive as possible. The original book was only 42 pages because publishing in the UK is very expensive and as I say the Dvd documentary made on a very tight budget. Following your question I have now written to Steve Hopper inviting him to contribute to the ebook, so thanks for your question which hopefully will lead to a better balanced publication.
Woodomain - Jeremy Broun Thanks Jeremy, do you know yet when the ebook will be released, and are you planning an opening event perhaps like the one you had for Furniture Today 3 at Bath university. regards, Mark
Mark White Mark, I presume you are taking the Mickey now regarding 'an opening event'! The cost of hiring the lecture theatre at Bath University where I premiered Furniture Today 3 is around £1,000 and then there is the marketing effort and PR costs involved and chasing up people with bombardments of advertising to remind them to come and signposting in car parks so they don't lose their way. And then there is the work involved in turning an ebook into a meaningful onscreen presentation. And then there is the unavoidable fact that Joe woodworker a) has to warm to the idea of buying an ebook and b) pay a price for it that reflects the cost of producing it! Traditionally book promotions are done by booksellers such as Waterstones and it is hardly likely they have heard of Alan Peters. No, the strategy is to complete the project and promote in on my website and then keep fingers crossed that over the next thirty years interested people will buy this valuable archive on a medium (computing device) that is still available. If you know any wealthy patrons of the Arts then please by all means organise the event here (or even at your college) and I will be pleased to put my suit on and attend and sign copies! Joking apart I am actually very excited about the potential of ebooks on my subject but will the rest of the world catch on in my lifetime?
Woodomain - Jeremy Broun No I wasn`t taking the mickey Jeremy, far from it, I was just enquiring. Cost and inconvenience aside you did have quite a good turnout for the FT3 event, most of the great and good in the furniture world attended including Fred Baier. I`m still looking for some wealthy patrons myself but I think John Makepeace has them all! I will try and promote your ebook among my small circle, good luck with the project, you can put me down as a pre-order. Regards, Mark
