I have always said that there is a difference between an author being racist and an author writing a character to be racist. This is clearly the former.
Yeah, there's a clear difference between these derogatory racist passages and something like the way Jodi Piccoult wrote Small Great Things, where she writes about racism (and from the POV of a racist in certain chapters). The Piccoult book was a difficult read but never made me think the author was racist, just that she was trying to authentically portray white supremacists in her book (which is part of the plot).
I knew it was bad but when she read off ALL OF THOSE QUOTES?! omg horrid

Honestly, these reviews are what got me posting on AO3. If these authors have the confidence to publish this drivel, I can have the confidence to put my fanfic out there. Seriously, even the fic I wrote the afternoon after I got my wisdom teeth out is better than this book.

A classic example of why we say “show, don’t tell.” The book can tell us Nicole’s “sUcH a GoOd GiRl” until it’s blue in the face, but if all it shows us is Nicole going wild with the biker gang, we’re not going to actually believe she’s a goody-two-shoes. I’ve seen a lot of stories do this with characters who are supposed to be unlikable-they’ll tell us how mean the character is, but since they never show the character doing anything mean, it just looks like the other characters hate them for no reason, which makes the audience feel sorry for the “mean” character and see the protagonists as bullies.

Hearing a trailer be called a pent house sent me 😂😂 As someone who grew up in a trailer and has been in several trailer parks, ‘pent house’ is the last thing id describe a trailer. Our trailer had a bullet hole through the wall from the last tenants, had no lock on the bathroom door, and had soft/rotting floors which caused our fridge to slowly sink into the floor. This book was def written by a yt middle class woman whos never even stepped foot into sketchy/shoddy bar 💀

I honestly am not surprised about the racism. I follow a lot of people who love dark romance purely out of curiosity. Because of that, I am caught up on all the fav book series and authors of the community, and Sons of Mayhem is one of them.
The dark romance community tends to never give trigger warnings when it comes to recommending romance books. Instead, I judge the content on what they say about the triggering content. If they say something like "a lot of people love or hate this series", I know it's absolutely horribly written. If they say, "it's not grooming, and didn't feel creepy at all!", I know that it's textbook grooming. When you actually look at the content of the book, it tends to be the exact opposite of how they say, because their considerations of what is bad vs good is far more warped than the average person. That unfortunately comes with the genre.
From my experiences as well, most of the community is white women. So, it honestly doesn't surprise me that dark romance readers can't tell when their fav books include racism.
its very unfortunate because it has potential to be a safe welcoming spae for people who just want to explore a certain idea or fantasy, for example dating a gang member lol but because they just don't have any warnings or meaningful way to like filter what you're getting its just hell lmao. come on now guys we wouldn't shit on you if you could be a wee bit reasonable. They're also just like, generally very poorly written and disappointing and include shit that really didn't need to be, i.e the racism. kind of a weird reference to bring up (besides 'Sons of Anarchy') but this reminded me of this game that came out a while ago called "Ride to Hell: Retribution". The exact details escape me atm but iirc, it was going to be a big open-world GTA type of game but you play as a member of a motorcycle gang and something happened (It might have been budget problems or some studio mismanagement) and it ended up being released in as this really buggy, glitchy unfinished mess and there are parts of you can tell were meant to be areas you could do missions or quests in but the team wasn't able to put them in so when you go in, the game will just kick you right back out like "nope, there's nothing here. bye." I think all you can really do is ride your motorcycle, have Quicktime sex, beat up glitchy NPCs, and drive past locations you can't go into, so yeah. Pretty apt to what this book sounds like
