WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world - valued at over $1.5 billion dollars.
100 billion messages are sent each day on the app by over 2 billion active users. And it all started with a Ukrainian immigrant who dropped out of college and lost both of his parents.
Growing up with little money and no support, he worked as a janitor before learning how to code and becoming a hacker. When he started WhatsApp, he had no choice but to work in a cold office - clinging onto blankets for warmth - and on cheap Ikea tables.

That pretty Interesting. I always wondered who created WhatsApp. My wife is a Mexican citizen so when I met her I lived in Massachusetts at the time. We started talking through Facebook Messenger, then she Actually got me on WhatsApp. Cellphone Data Rates and fees are Much Much Different Here in Mexico than in the US. Like here in the US we have Unlimited Plans, and even prepaid Unlimited plans, but not in Mexico.also it's much Easier there cause all of your contacts are there. I have Friends in Mexico, Obviously, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cashmere India, Russia, England, Canada lol all over

I don't think that his coding was his most outstanding trade, but the fact that he wanted to create something everybody can enjoy and staying true to his values. Unfortunately there's not many people around with such a trade.

How do they make money? Just by selling data?
Pretty much, Facebook changed the privacy policy of the app so now they can collect a ton of data from it, which is extremely useful for their advertising services. They also offer WhatsApp Business which I think costs money. Back in the day, the app costed $1 a year, and at the time they had 700 million users, so that's 700 million dollars. When it was making that much, Facebook said the app was only being monetized "in a limited fashion" which indicates they are probably making much more money now, probably in the billions

Where did they get the funding? $250k could not sustain their efforts. Please explain.
If it's just two or three people, $250k can pay for over a year of full time efforts, even in Silicon Valley, if you are frugal (ie, working in a coffeeshop rather than paying a lease). And it's possible that the two founders were living off of their Yahoo savings rather than eating into the $250k themselves.

I guess I just don't understand what the point of WhatsApp is, why would anyone pay for an extra messaging service when your phone already has one? Are all these people just like the suckers who still pay for AOL? No wonder Zuckerborg was so desperate to buy it.
WhatsApp allows you to message with anyone around the world for free with out international fee. They are the first ones to have that feature but now o most all social media platforms already have it.

Because WhatsApp was known to crash phone when people first downloaded as they had virus and it steal your contacts and networks information and of course destroy your destroyed phone that they aren’t responsible to replace or fix.
