    Part 5: • Mack 10 on Running int...
    Part 1: • Mack 10 on Growing Up ...
    -----
    In this clip, Mack 10 recounted the East vs. West beef and refuted the notion that the situation was sparked by the infamous Vibe Magazine cover. For Westside Connection, and Mack 10 in particular, the issue was about a lack of respect west coast rappers received from their east coast counterparts.

    New York didn’t show no love to anyone outside of New York at that time. Everyone outside of New York showed them love. Now New York know how it feels. Eventually everyone outside of New York stopped caring about being accepted in New York. It got to the point everyone outside of New York accepted each other to the point that now New York have to sound like everyone else to be accepted by everyone else. If New York would have did it right back then, they would have stayed at the top, and no one would have cared and accepted it.

      I and many other people from the east coast did like some west coast rap. But we was mostly into east coast rap. And its the same with people on west coast. They were mostly into west coast rap and many of them felt east coast rap was corny just like many of us felt most west coast rap was corny. Even when Joe Clair use to host rap city, he said on one of the the episodes, that he has people on the west coast telling him that Rap City play too much east Coast, and he had people on the east coast telling him Rap City play too much west coast.
      The west coast was not buying east coast rap like that after a lot of west coast rappers started getting into the game and making big hits. Nas first album was a classic but it flopped partly because the west coast did not support it. Instead they supported Warren G whose first album cannot even compare to Nas first Album. Warren G rhymes are simplistic and the beats are nowhere near as good as the beats on Nas first Album.
      Did Nas bi!tch and cry because the west coast did not support his first album? No.
      Did Nas make a group called East Side Connection and dis the west coast because they did not acknowledge him? No.
      And a lot of other great east coast artist who released classic albums flopped because partly because the west was not support them and not playing their records. Instead the west coast supported Mack 10, Too Short, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, Tupac, West Side Connection etc..
      Did the east coast b!tch and cry and moan that the west did not want to play their records and did not want buy their records? No. Did we say "your entitled to your lame opinions" No. But we felt ya`ll was entitled to your opinions though.

    To me the drama between coasts started in the 80s. You would get the perception that New York looked down on any artists not from the East. I would watch interviews on tv or read articles in hip hop publications by critics and New York came off so arrogant. That was the mindset of NYC back then and it wasn't necessarily arrogance. For a rapper or group to make it big out of Queensbridge, Bedstuy, South Bronx, Jamaica Queens or other neighborhoods meant you were nice. But to then start getting a rep all over Queens, Brooklyn, Harlem and Long Island meant you were serious. Then, for a rapper or group to become famous in NYC was like being at the top of the world because it's largely unimaginable for 99.9% of the people in the city. To be a dude from some projects in Queens and getting love in every borough meant you made it. So when NYC heads came across somebody from another city who wasn't a superstar, it didn't hold weight. That's why people like Ice Cube, Ice T, Eazy E, Will Smith and other stars didn't have any issues. But the other people who were good if not great but not really turning heads in Brooklyn or Harlem wasn't getting much love.
      That's just how NYC was back in the day.

Growing up in East LA, I was exposed to Cube, Too Short, DJ Quik, Pac, MC Eiht, E40, Snoop, Dre, Eazy E, Cypress Hill, Dog Pound were unmatched and although I also listened to Biggie, Nas, Scarface. I wasn’t always privy to some of the other legends like: Jay Z, and the Wu until the late 90’s. It’s not that I didn’t know that there were many other musicians that were popping at the time, but my pride made me feel that supporting other rappers that weren’t fucking with Death Row artist was a betrayal. It wasn’t until my later years when all the East/ West subsided that I was able to allow myself to appreciate the likes of Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, JayZ, WuTang, Jadakiss, Nas, 50 cent. Btw Once Master P bailed out Snoop, that made me appreciate the South more, rappers like Scarface, UGk, Cash Money, No Limit, Outcast and so many more. I wasn’t a Big Mac 10 fan because growing up I always thought he was trying to hard or that he was a bit arrogant but once that Cavi Hit record came out I thought it was 🔥 lit. And although I wasn’t a big fan you can’t deny that the man was gifted and maybe a bit humbled by the experience in life after success.

    Jeru the Damaja "The Sun rises in the East" title for his first album, was not a jab at the west coast. He was bigging up the East New York section of Brooklyn which is where he`s from. Its the same thing with that song by Blahzay Blah "East is in the house" which is Jeru doing the the chorus in that song. Blahzay and Jeru was not bigging up the entire east coast, They were referring to East New York section of Brooklyn.

    How are you gonna compare an underground album(Illmatic) from early 94 to a mainstream album (Bow Down) from late 96? Anyone who was in the culture at that time knows that there was a major difference in hip hop and sales at that time.

    The one thing Pac was off-base with his comments on Bow Down was claiming that Cube and them weren’t holding it down for the West when he was in jail and waited until Hit Em Up to go on the war path.
    They had Westside Slaughterhouse a full year before that though.

      The only thing I remember hearing was that Mack 10 got pissed at Cube because Mack 10 wanted to go on tour but Cube was too busy with other projects and kind of blew him off. That rubbed Mack 10 the wrong way and his career basically fell off because of it and they haven't been close ever since.

    • @RossDeGrate
      @RossDeGrate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mack got into with Cube’s cousin or wife’s cousin or something like that. Cube took his fam’s side, even tho Mack felt like he wasn’t in the wrong. Then he said Cube got disrespectful and he wasn’t here for it. At that point Cube wasn’t on the music that strong so it just dissolved.

    • @memorylove8369
      @memorylove8369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lies. Dr. Dre wanted his 5 mics for Chronic, it was a whole uproar about it and like Mac 10 said he wanted his 5 Mics, give me my half a mic, I need that, I want that. 5 mics was everything to the culture. It wasn't about selling records, it was about you solidifying your GREATNESS. You must've been to young to understand or not in the thick of the culture to say that, you just wasn't there.

    It was a real sense of disrespect felt on the west as far as how nyc rappers,rap fans & magazines acted towards west coast rap/west coast people in general. It was ny dudes dissin the west coast in the source magazine letters column (I remember reading them),way before Pac dropped hit em up. So it's disengenous to put it all on Pac & Big.
