I feel like they should have done a blind taste test to figure out who makes the best homemade sweet tea first and then used that person's tea in this line up. Although this does illustrate that homemade isn't automatically better, it depends on who's making it.

@@lilykep The different brands do have a slightly different taste. Then add in things like brew time (hot brewed tea) vs cold brewed tea, and then sugar type and amount of said sugar. In a way it's reassuring that they both put homemade last, because that tells you the tea was the problem, not the judges. And in defense of Liz, homemade tea preference is highly personal and family-based, whereas with the premade stuff there's that element of familiarity that makes it taste better than it probably really is. I _like_ my tea less sweet - but then I'm also half-Yankee.

    • @trelana

Homemade tea also depends on several factors like water quality, sugar used, and tea leaves brand/quality as well as the process for making it all. My partner and I use the same ingredients, but our homemade tea tastes different depending on which one of us made it and tastes completely different from his mother's, who lives next door to us.

I agree. The Tea my Aunt made in Kentucky and the Tea my Wife made in Georgia were both great but taste totally different. Both were very sweet but My Grampa had bees so We had fresh honey in the Tea and My Wife used to make hers in that bright hot southern Georgia sun with a bit of lemon in it.

I’m a 60 yes old Alabamian now, and grew up on Mom’s homemade, high octane, Lipton sweet tea made in an Alabama Girl pickle jar, then kept in the fridge in an old plastic milk jug.
We were kind of poor, so we didn’t do restaurants and I never saw ready-made tea for sale at the Piggly Wiggly or A&P, so I had nothing to compare it to. When I grew up, I moved away from tea and began drinking Coke & Dr Pepper.
When I went back to sweet tea years later, I found I didn’t care for Lipton anymore. I tried several other brands but they just didn’t taste good anymore. Then a 4th of July came. I was asked to bring a few gallons of sweet tea. When I went to the store to get tea bags to make it, the only tea left was decaffeinated Luziane. With dread, and no other option, I bought it. I used 5 bags like Mom did with the Lipton, and added the same 3 scoops of sugar she did with the odd scoop she had. I poured some into a half glass of ice and took a reluctant drink. It was amazing! I took it to the cookout and it was a huge hit. Everyone loved it. When asked, I just told them I was out of sugar and used a bag of natural brown sugar from Madagascar I had gotten as a Christmas gift from some pretentious Yankee friends to sweeten it. I mean, how could I admit to it NOT being Lipton AND being decaf? That would be two of the three strikes required for a lifetime ban from my home state. Even if It was, and still is, the best glass of sweet iced tea I’ve ever had.
Roll Tide and pass the Luzianne.

Apparently a lot of foods that are common in the South can lead to kidney stones including black tea (used for sweet tea), spinach, grits, okra, sweet potatoes and french fries. All because they are high in oxalates that can form into kidney stones.
I had one decades ago after years of drinking sweet tea and likely not drinking enough liquids. Now I still get the little crystals passing on occasion (you can feel the sharp edged sand bits passing through) but I drink lots of water so those pass relatively easily.

My sweet tea story...I'm northeast Ohio born and bred, but Mom was a Georgia girl, so I've spent some time in the South. Years ago, a pizza place , now out of business, added sweet tea to their menu (this was before McDonald's started making sweet tea). Shortly after they did so, I went in one day to enjoy their lunch pizza buffet and ordered the sweet tea. The waitress gave me a dubious look and asked if I was sure that was what I wanted. I said yes, and she shrugged and brought me a glass. It was delicious--very sweet but not quite syrupy. The waitress actually stayed to watch me drink it and when I complimented her on the sweet tea, she told me I was only the second customer to like it and not complain it was too sweet. The first? A gentleman who grew up in the South. I guess sweet tea is an acquired taste...and I'm glad I acquired it!

The manager happened to be next to us and decided to explain that they had "Southern" sweet tea whereas up north it was "just sweet tea or even unsweet tea," as if we were some sort of yankee tourists at a waypoint to our travel destination. I didn't want to break his heart, so I avoided telling him that I had never been above the Mason-Dixon line and my partner (the one talking about it the most, but with worldly travels under his belt) had grown up just outside of the town this McD's was in.

I knew as soon as she said it had a weird aftertaste that one was homemade. I make it all the time and it's tough to get the perfect balance of strong enough but not so strong the tannins become overbearing and it tastes like shoe polish. Once you have that taste in there it's just impossible to sugar it away. Mass produced shouldn't have that (they'd have no customers!) because their process would have been nailed down so it's uniform and always palatable.

But the BEST sweet tea in our little town is from Metro Diner. It is amazing. Only get it on special occasions though ‘cause it’s 12.00 a gallon. 😯 We walked out one day with 2 gallons, looked at our bill and just about fainted. But it’s sooo good. Now we buy it when our northern friends come for a visit and we want them to taste good ‘ol southern deliciousness!
