LTBJ (Douggs & Sam) are teaching it exactly like that. Steering lines through the rings, SU & SD.

I don't BASE jump but all of this is very important to know. I'm always amazed by people that know nothing about the gear they jump and just trust that it works. FK that, I want to know these systems and what they do. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. I have always packed SD with steering lines outside the guide rings. Im planning a SL jump and letting go of the toggles in mid-flight is a must. Having these statistics makes me feel a lot better about routing them through the guide rings 😅

Agreed. WLO + tailgate is something everyone should be running, slider up or down.
Doesnt hurt to run that same setup on a skydive rig too. People make fun of you, but chopping is so 2005

I’ve never heard of line release toggles for skydiving - not a bad idea but I guess it’s never been an adopted thing.
Pump the toggles twice, if it doesn’t clear, cut away haha

my only concern is the same as someone mentioned on your post on IG. that is having enough time to grab a WLO toggle. for myself I jump in Alberta and lots of the objects i jump are less than 400' or 300' so in the very unlikely circumstance that i had a line over i would be afraid that that extra second might matter. compared to just unstowing a toggle. but on the other hand what you are saying with the statistics is that with a proper tailgate it is very unlikely and having your brakes not routed through the ring now becomes a redundancy because of the tailgate. i do like the discussion and i agree that it is important to question the things you have been taught. i always wondered about having toggles through the rings on SD just haven't known anyone who does it. thanks for the video.

Yeah man, I agree with ya. So in your situation, you are accepting that if you blow a toggle on deployment you're now going to be dealing with that in the 300-400' range. AND, if you jump long enough, and often enough, you most likely will lose a toggle at some point.
Where as, you most likely will never have a line over.
So we have our equipment set up in a way to deal with something that almost never happens, BUT that same configuration could fuck us from something else that happens more commonly.
      That seems weird right? haha
So in a sense - If you choose to run the lines inside the rings you entirely remove the chances of losing a toggle, and if you use a tailgate, your chances of having a line over are as close to 0% as possible. And just as a fail safe, have releasable toggles.
It seems like a no brainer right?
Yet, even myself, I struggle to want to change because I love how the canopy feels when routed outside the rings.
I do know that most of the European schools get their students inside the rings from day one. It seems to be more of an American thing.

Is this who I think it is? Krusher? Also I appreciate the comment and response.

I feel like my osp1 flies so much better outside the rings

      I’m with ya.
I wonder if that’s just cause what we are used to though.
I love the feel of it, and the range in control, but if I switched, and put the time in, could I feel the same about it 🤷
I guess my whole thing with this is to just get people thinking a bit more and actually discussing it.

Mine def does too, I feel like the canopy is unresponsive as it is (especially flying in deep brakes), and lines through guide rings makes it even worse.
I’ve been in deep brakes and had it take a full second before it rotates for a snap turn. Scared the shit out of me.

would you suggest still using the LRT method of setting the brakes to mitigate the increased opening forces on the toggle stiffeners?

    • @johnnysjumps
      @johnnysjumps  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I’d treat it the same as slider up in relation to how you set the brakes - pull the brake setting down through the guide ring, pass the toggle through the brake setting then into the stow.
I don’t see any downside to the LRT method but it seems unnecessary.
I’ve never actually thought about the opening force on the toggle stiffeners.
      What do you think?

In paragliding your lines are through the rings until you start flying Acro. some then take the lines out of the rings so you have more control back flying, stalling, and spinning your canopy. Just some food for thought. Obviously what we are doing is vastly different.
