- Today i blow through my half Tonne mark with this huge 11 kg melt. I pour 10 huge clean bars for my collection. I melt down a big Bull Bar and got a lot more from it than i thought i would. HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it??????.

STEEL FOR MY FRIEND
I keep all my steel and cast iron pieces and I give them to my friend and once he gets about a tonne from me and his own collecting he takes that to the scrapyard and sells it then he buys some beer and comes over to my house and we make a night of it.
No My friend doesn’t have a TH-cam channel he just scraps metal in his spare time.

GOT A GOOD CHUCKLE DRAGGING THAT HEAVY BUMPER IN 4 INCH INCREMENTS ALL THE WAY TO THE SCALE. ALMOST THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING FOR THE VEGGIES, BUT YOU GRABBED THE BREW INSTEAD. NICE CALL, AND GREAT CAP GUN. LOVE THE FRENCHIES GETTING THEIR SCREEN TIME.

If you mix that iron with the carbon from the bones you can make steel instead! Still not a very efficient source though.

@@Andrew-zq3ip He's tried (many years ago), but after wrecking a few molds and crucibles (and I think at least one of his early forges), he gave up. Was never able to get it hot enough for a good pour.
All that forging over that floor, and it's still spotless.

That about the best use I’ve seen for an aluminium bull bar. All they do on a car is bend when you hit something and damage the entire front end instead of one side the impact is on.

That's the good shit. A heap of large ingots, brushed instead of polished. I like the look of a mirrored bar, but a big stack of brushed ingots is so much better.
Yes mate exactly right if I was to Mirror all these bars it would’ve taken me another whole day, but these are good bars to have put aside for when I want to do some future casting projects I can just grab one off the shelf and it’s good to go👌🏻😁

Why do the aluminum bricks shrink down only in the middle when cooling? Wouldn’t the top of the bar always be level when it cools and shrinks?
I guess it's because the core remains hot longer and since it cools from the outside in, all the weight from the top squeezes the still malleable part in the center, hence the middle shrink and not the full "top squeeze".

That Bull Bar was some high grade aluminum! You could tell when you stirred it and tried to take the stag out the first time, nothing to pull out!!

The way I see it, if your buddy leaves his stuff there, it's fair game for scrap! I'm guessing that 13 grams lost was probably in the slag you scraped off. Paint and such from the looks of it. Another great melt and nothing soothes an aching belly like an aluminum melt!
