Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on TH-cam, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on TH-cam. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on TH-cam, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

You're talking about 5 of the most talented musicians to come out of England in the late 1960's. I know everyone wants to see you react to Close to the Edge, but their breakthrough album was "The Yes Album", followed in short order by "Fragile", followed by C.T.T.E. Not many reactors do them in that order, which I get, because you are going in with no knowledge of the band. Apart from that, you have now been "Awakened" to the musical artistry of this wonderful group. Peace out.

I’m very much a proponent of chronological Yes reactions. Start with Yours Is No Disgrace from The Yes Album and go track by track in album order through Tormato. Then come back and do the same with Yes and Time and A Word and then jump forward to Drama. But do the classic ‘70s seven album run together chronologically first.

I too have seen various incarnations of Yes play this live. It has NEVER failed to elicit tears, live or recorded. Possibly the most spiritually and musically inspiring piece I have ever heard. In 1978 I took this album to an electronics store to shop for new speakers. Several sales people on the floor became Yes fans that day. I bought a pair of JBL L36. Still have them.

Great story! Something in that vein happened to me, once: I was in the local computer store on my block and, wanting to hear why these speakers were so astronomically expensive, I asked for someone to pull up "Siberian Khatru". Within the first three notes, a sales-kid from a different dept came running in, exclaiming: "Who asked for this song??" and I said I did, and he launched into what exceptionally good taste I had, how much he loved Yes and everything they do, etc. It was funny, But gratifying. YES will live on as they are re-discovered.

Yes. I’ve seen them live about 10 times, and yes, they knock it out of the park. Their live performances have always been superb and they do all of the time changes and instrumental magic on point - and three part vocal harmonies as well. Yessongs from 1973 is a legendary document from the Close To The Edge tour. Live at Montreaux has a great live rendition of “Awaken.”
-- I think you’ll definitely get into Close to the Edge… and then Relayer. - as to your comment about not hearing about them before, yeah. Those who know, know. Many contemporary musicians will cite them as big influences. Every member is at the top of their game.

Yeah. It´s very representative of their 70´s work. The rhythm changes, odd time signatures, transitions, dynamics, atmosphere, sometimes it´s wild, sometimes calm, it´s majestic, it´s powerful, it´s esoteric. It´s a trip.

Glory to the '70's. That's what Steve Howe and Jon Anderson said in an interview. These muscians were ALLOWED to do their own thing, not for the commercial aspect, but for the very LOVE of music. They were able to express their musical prowess and talent without management getting into the making of it. BRAVO! All of them were from England (London, Lancashire, etc.) I still get shivers when I listen to this piece and got the album when it came out(1979, I guess). Thanks for your appreciation of GREAT',INSPIRING AND SPIRITUAL music.

This here was written to pull all your darkness right out through your third eye. There is nothing else like it in the rock genre. It is as close to Ockeghem, Josquin, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven as rock gets.. cosmic future sacred space consecration. There are no bands I know of composing pieces today that synthesize as much from history and project it out to the future as this does. I hope more great artists on this level are coming. The 70s were a special time in music and I'm happy to see you hear this incredible music for the first time! Good luck with your busy pursuits!

I’ve seen Yes 6 or 7 times over the years in various incarnations. They played this song every time except on the 1999 ladder tour, it’s so beautiful that it brings me to tears every time.
I got Into Yes when I was 17. I am now 50 and my life has been truly blessed with Yes music. Imagine the poor guy who discovers Yes when they’re 80, loves them and then dies the next day. I pity the guy who has spent their entire lives not knowing this band as they have let one of life’s true joys just pass them by.

Yes is unique in the fact that they are not guitar centric like most "rock" bands throughout history. The guitar player is a world class chet atkins finger picker with the acoustic guitar. He is also versed in classical guitar and much of his electric guitar style comes from the rock-a-billy players from the early 1950s and jazz. It's why you don't hear him bending a lot of notes like all the blues influenced players. He wrote many of the yes pieces but approached his guitar parts as no more important than the other instruments. When finger picking the bass lines are played with the thumb. What Steve Howe did that was brilliant is he turned the bass parts over to the bass player. The next step was he liked a clean jazzy sound so Chris Squire, the bass player, created a gritty in your face sound that gave the songs the power and punch needed for a "rock" song. In many of the songs it's the bass adding effects with flanges, fuzz boxes, etc. When listening to yes, listen to how little Howe is playing all six strings at once. He instead is thowing down all these tasty 2 and 3 string licks he learned from his acoustic finger picking and jazz influences. With Howe playing so clean it was the bass that jumped out and hit you in the face. Squire's Rickenbacker bass was the perfect choice in creating the "yes" sound. Squires contributions were just as important, but that's another story.

I love that you keep mentioning how you can’t pigeonhole Yes and find them hard to describe. It’s why I began my Yes journey. They sounded like noone else and noone else sounded like them. I didn’t want the same old thing. I wanted something different. In the early 70’s Yes sounded like they were from another planet.
    And they still do.
Oh, and when on their game, the single greatest live band I have ever witnessed.
Pending musical immortality taking place here.
Thanks for your reaction. You will find that all of their material from this era is amazing, and all of it stands up to repeated listens.
This song itself I have listened to thousands of times, and it only gets better.
I have seen live versions of this song which brought grown men to their knees, and left me weeping sweet tears of joy. Kid. You. Not.

I've seen Yes twice, once when I was 17 in 1978 (a little pot, laying in my hammock inside, and blasting the head phones,) and once a few years ago (I wanted to see them at this particular time because for the first time in eons, Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman were going to be touring together.) They come from England. On this album, you have the best players that came together at one time. Guitar, Steve Howe/Bass, Chris Squire (Deadly wicked,/Drums, Alan White/Keyboards, the brilliant Rick Wakeman. My best friend turned me on to them, thank you my dear...

I've seen it played live multiple times. It's electrifying; and very emotional. ONe of the highlights, was seeing them perform this piece, in 2004, in Radio City Music Hall (NYC), with Rick playing the pipe organ in the hall there. Breathtaking. Some of the density present on the studio track (possible thanks to overdubs and multiple tracks) is lost in the translation to a five-person live band, even allowing for Chris's three-neck bass/12-string monster...and they weren't above using some recorded backing tracks in later performances.

This is my 2nd favorite LP by them, following the epic Relayer LP. I saw them several times and yes, they were this good in concert. I saw them on this tour at a stadium show. They played late afternoon (following Bob Seger) and the 2nd time he sings "wish the sun to stand still" the sun was just dipping behind the rear wall, the last shaft of light hitting the band on the stage. Magical indeed.

Yes, they do this shit live very well! I discovered them in my teens in 1972, and have been to many of their concerts. There are plenty of them on youtube...some better quality than others. Mr. Rick Wakeman actually played that middle section on a pipe organ, in a Cathedral, in Switzerland. Those "choir ahhs" are also from said pipe organ. This band is absolute genius. You'll see! I bet the farm that they will become your favorite band. I'm glad I caught you early in your YES journey. Looking forward to more.

The pipe organ in the cathedral in Switzerland was what, three miles from the recording studio? Instead of bringing recording equipment to the cathedral, the phone lines in Switzerland in the late ‘70s were so pristine the organ was miked and the feed was sent directly to the studio OVER THE TELEPHONE LINES.
Incredible, innovative musicianship. That was Yes in the ‘70s.

    @Yesquire0 ปีที่แล้ว +3

"Yes" was chosen as the band's name to reflect the desire of its members to make only joyful, spiritfually uplifting, positive music. And so they did, for decades. They are, in fact, still recording and touring today, albeit with only one of the guys you here on "Awaken" still playing, guitarist Steve Howe. The history of Yes is a bit convoluted. Membership in the active band is a bit of a revolving door, with members coming and leaving and coming back again, and maybe once again after that. The keyboardist here, Rick Wakeman, is, as I'm sure you have suspected, classically trained, and has released about 50 classical piano albums. He has a great sense of humor, and is very well spoken, and quite a celebrity in England. He came into Yes when the original keyboard player, Tony Kaye, refused to learn to play all of the new synths and other electronic keyboards that popped up in the late '60's. Wakemen loved the new keyboards and stacked oodles of them onstage, encircling himself with at least a dozen keyboards. He was a tall man, 6'5" or more, who sported almost waist-length blond hair and performed in a floor -length silver sequined cape. He's still performing, and pre-Covid toured with a couple of other famous Yes-men, Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin under the stage name "ARW" to appreciative audiences around the world.
Yes musis, indeed, is a genre all unto itself, but it is also the foundation of a new sub-genre of rock music called "progressive rock", which horned its way into popular rock music, mainly on "underground" FM stations, starting in the the late '60's. That was it's heyday, running up through about 1978. Yes used to fill stadiums, and play multiple dates in arenas when they came to town.
The unique and amazingly creative lead guitarist, Steve Howe, was voted "Best Overall Guitarist" by the readers of Guitar Player magazine five years in a row (1977-1981) and in 1981 was the first rock guitar player inducted into the Guitar Player Hall of Fame.
In terms of record sales, the band's most successful era was in the mid-1980's when Atlantic Records pressured that iteration of the band into a more pop music sound.
Progressive rock has survived up through today. The kids who loved Yes, Genesis, and ELP when they were young grew up to form there own bands and play progressive rock about the time Yes and Genesis stumbled into pop music. If you have enjoyed learning about Yes and its music after never even having heard the band's name, there are about a dozen or so similar bands playing similar music which you also will never have heard of in your life. They don't get any radio play, but have kept plugging away in this internet era making music for small but devoted fanbases, with my favorite being post-1989 Marillion, and close seconds being Porcupine Tree, IQ, the Flower Kings, Dream Theater, and Spock's Beard.
The lead singer of Yes, Jon Anderson, was a guest of an Icelandic musical ensemble by the name of Todmobile, which is a rock band, symphony orchestra, and choir rolled into one. They performed several classic Yes songs, including "Awaken". It was absolutely magnificent. You'd be shortchanging yourself big-time if you didn't give it a listen:

Great, honest reaction👍 I’ve seen this performed live on five different tours; at the point where Jon comes in again with “master of images…“ for the last third of the song, it’s not unusual to see hundreds, even thousands in larger venues, of people stand, if they aren’t already, arms open wide looking to the sky. It always feels like connecting with God and when Wakeman shakes the walls with those power chords it’s all over and tears just happen. Their music evokes feelings that no other band I know does.

    Absolute Masterpiece. Genius.
    I’ve been a Yes fan since 1970, age 14.
And ‘Awaken’ is my all time favourite Yes piece of music.
Just, as there are so many.
‘Awaken’ came 5 years after ‘Close To The Edge’.
I saw my first Yes Concert in 1973, aged 17.
And Yes, they play their songs live, just as you hear them on the studio recordings.
Here’s a couple of special Live versions of ‘Awaken’, for your own personal pleasure. Yes at the ‘Montreux Jazz Festival’, 2003. The 5 from this original Studio recording, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Alan White. Genius! Sadly 2 of whom are no longer with us.

And here’s another phenomenal Live performance of ‘Awaken’, from 2013. It’s Jon Anderson performing with the Icelandic Rock/Pop Band, ‘Todmobile’. You won’t regret watching this, it’s absolutely sensational.

I saw lead singer and founder member Jon Anderson just 5 days ago, in London. Performing with the young musicians from the ‘Paul Green Rock Academy’, from the US. They performed the whole of the ‘Close To The Edge’ Album, celebrating its 50th Anniversary, last year. Jon Anderson is 78 now and sounds as amazing as ever. You also mentioned the amazing Keyboards on here. They are played by Rick Wakeman, the Master Wizard of the Keyboards. Seeing him live next February, (2024). We are still being blessed. Just my own feelings.
    Enjoy. 🎶❤️🎶

I first saw Yes live in 1974 at the San Diego Sports Area. (Yeah, I'm an old guy) They were touring their new album Relayer. I had Fragile and Close To The Edge and was already in love with the band, but I had not heard Relayer yet. They opened with a song called Sound Chaser, which is an amazing song but on first listen it's almost incomprehensible. . I spent the first 10 minutes of that concert in absolute confusion. haha. So yes, they can play that stuff live. Every note right where it's supposed to be. I saw them every year after than until they broke up the first time.

I have seen Yes live around 10 times, when they do a live show its hard to imagine that they can play such complex pieces, but they can, and Awaken is one of the masterpieces, Close to the edge is also a masterpiece. 72 year old hippy here . First time I saw them was 1969 in Dundee Scotland, blew my mind.

This whole album is perfect. Eccentric genius musicians. They are still together and touring, but with only 1 semi-original member now. The singer is 78 years old and tours a lot with various musicians playing Yes and solo stuff and still sounds great.. Check out Jon Anderson's solo stuff for sure.

I saw them live in 1971. Epic!
Bands I was into - and still am - from that era, include ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer), King Crimson (my all time favourite band just edging out Nightwish), Uriah Heep, Van Der Graaf Generator and, well, there a quite a few more but that's enough for now.

Great reaction, Awaken is one of the epic compositions YES created. Seen Awaken live many times, one time about 10 feet away from Howe at the Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach. You just stare...lol Live YES was amazing to actually see the musicianship and timing, unbelievable. There are some good live vids on YT, I would recommend listen to the studio versions first, then check out a live one. You have done Roundabout, this is a good live version,

Yes is life and spending 10's of thousands of hours with their discography is a life well lived...Subbing etc...Good health and happiness to you and yours and those still yet to hear this group...:)

They are a British rock group. Best progressive rock band in my opinion. YES music doesn't get blocked. I've watched loads of reactions to them and haven't heard any say they got blocked. I've seen them maybe 15 times live since the mid 70's. Not easy to play these long masterpieces live but here's one that sounds almost exactly the same as the studio version with all the classic YES members, Jon Anderson. Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman: th-cam.com/video/nDXccU0xgNo/w-d-xo.html

There is a wonderful live version of this song on TH-cam. It is Jon Anderson joining a symphonic band/orchestra to play this -- I'm not sure if it is a special occasion with guest singer Jon Anderson or if it was a Jon Anderson concert. I've only seen this song from that show (it was done in the 2000's, I think). Anyway, look it up. It will blow you away!

Close to the Edge and Gates of Delirium rate just a little above this for me. You got a subscriber. Do more! ❤❤❤ BTW I was into Genesis then Floyd then Yes over about 5 years aged 15-20. I’m now 53 😂😢🎉
One thing: once you’ve listened to Close to the Edge, your heart changes and life will never be the same ❤❤❤❤ This is good prep; and Gates of Delirium will blow you away with its scale and narrative and everything. But CTTE is the one and it’s slightly shorter than Awaken🎉🎉🎉

Yes, they have played this, and many other, equally or more complex, song(s) live, most of them more than once. I guess when you have a few months to record an album, and you rehearse, and rehearse, and rehearse, you kinda finally memorise all your complex parts... :-)

    • @kentclark6420
      @kentclark6420 ปีที่แล้ว

Did you hear Greg Lake say that complexity in music isn't as hard to grasp, when you break each part down, one small step at a time? In its totality it seems overwhelming, but not so much broken into parts.

As to your question about Yes performing live, I saw them three times, and to be perfectly honest, it is an unrealistic tall order to expect them to replicate what you hear on certain albums. From album 'Close To The Edge' to album 'Going For The One', the music is just too expansive and complex for a live performance. In my opinion they demean themselves by performing certain pieces live, and surely do it because the great money in live concerts is just too much to resist. Yes unofficial groupies will swear they are great in concert, but they would yell and scream no matter what they played. You will hear parts that remind you of the albums, but that's about it. I know they refused to do side two, 'The Remembering' from 'Tales of Topographic Oceans' live because it is just too complex to tie all together into a tight product. That side in particular probably takes longer than any other work of theirs to appreciate, but once you get there, after hours of 'pain', the reward is incomparable.

I’m with you, the beginning and the calm middle part of this song are extremely beautiful. The end part with the organ swelling an the “masters” part gets too busy, too many things happening at once and Andersons vocals are a bit lacking. Thank goodness for the end, it’s beautiful again.
One of my favorite yes songs.
