The last fold of the saddle blanket is it's leading edge and should be faced forward so flaps don't blow open in forward movement. :) Poinsett's was written for use with not only different tack, but smaller regiments of different organization than war period units. In the field, volunteer units basically had to interpret Poinsett's to fit the equipment they had. (Regulars had already had to deal with that to a large degree). Some units, 1st Maine for instance, recruited a regular officer to conduct training at their formation giving them a head-start on field-craft before leaving their state. Some units, had to learn the hard way. It took till 1864 for Congdon's Cavalry Compendium to finally appear. It's basically an addendum to Poinsett's updating it to what was actually done in the field during the war, and is invaluable to the Federal Cavalry reenactor. I was going to offer our site, but the overcoat portion came up and I could see you were already familiar with it. ;) I'm very happy to see you paying it forward - nicely done. Hey! I was watching this and all of the sudden realized that I have spent a bunch of time with my horses in that exact spot!! That is the Casper rodeo grounds. I used to keep my horses in the stalls just off camera while I was a student at CC and rodeoed for Coach Parker.
I can swing up on a 15HH horse easliy but, i grab the reins and mane in one hand (left)and step back by the horses head take a fast step forward, jump and hook my heel on the hip and sit and slide forward... less graceful but quite easy to do.... walk trot and canter i have attempted
I really cheat on the bedroll I have a lovely rebel knapsack I "found" on campaign and have been using it since I was a wee private. now with my gold shoulders the amount of people who can tell me I cant have an infantry knapsack that is still stamped CSA is limited.
