Before you watch this, a quick fact: in the 1960s animated adaptation of The Grinch, Boris Karloff does not sing the song “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch”. It was Thurl Ravenscroft that sang it, who was the same person who voiced Tony the Tiger in the Frosted Flakes commercials. The lyrics of the song were in fact written by Dr. Seuss though.
@alienkreeper you'll hear his singing voice in movies like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and many others It was Chuck Jones that after hearing him do an audition of "You're a mean one Mr Grinch" told Seuss that anyone that could sing the name Grinch in a full octive to hire them
Karloff has one of those wonderful, sonorous voices that can sound either comforting or menacing; it takes only the slightest, most carefully applied inflection to switch from one to the other. It shouldn't be forgotten that he recorded quite a few children's stories, from The Emperor's Nightingale to Kipling's Just So Stories. And he is pure perfection as the Grinch, so much so that I cannot accept any other alternative.
I can say I’m HAPPY that you didn’t mention The Mean One. Not only that it’s a horror Christmas movie for adults but I don’t think Dr. Seuss would be proud, including Chuck Jones
Excellent and interesting list. Boris was so perfect as the Grinch and narrator. Fun fact, Thurl Ravenscroft also voiced the deep bass Russian blue cat in "The Aristocats".
Number one rule of Literature is to write what you know. A similar situation with one of the Sherman Brothers when making the musical The Slipper & the Rose. His wife had passed and he was in mourning. When you hear Cinderella (Gemma Craven) sing the lyrics to I can't forget the melody, it adds a layer of depth and complexity that is bittersweet and haunting.
Though honestly one day I’d love to try having someone body makeup me to make my tattoos not visible just so I can see what I look like with plain skin again. I’m 41 now and been with ink since I was 17 haha have plenty of them too
The only other actor that I know that compares was Ron Peralman when he did Beauty and the Beast. He also had 2 hour makeup sessions. Removing the makeup apparently took just as much time. That makes for very long days.
In The original book The Grinch was portrayed as having White fur, but when the book was republished for its full color edition, The Grinch has his trademark green fur.
While I generally like Howard's work, I greatly disliked his adaptation. Part of it was the adult content, but parts of the script made no sense. In my opinion, they tried way too hard to make you hate the mayor. The only thing I liked about it was the "Where Are You Christmas?" song. I quite enjoyed The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. Hans Conried, who voiced the Grinch in the later specials, did a wonderful job as Dr. Terwilliker. Apparently, Suess was quite unhappy with the final product, so I can understand his hesitation to do another. Chuck Jones did some Tom and Jerry shorts. His version of Tom looks very much like the Grinch. In some of them, Tom shares a few facial expressions with the Grinch. Jerry often resembles Cindy Lou Who, which is probably why I thought Jerry was a girl when I was little.
Last Friday, my work Secret Santa got me the movie I had asked for, the 2018 version of The Grinch, with Benedict Cumberbatch. That night I saw the Broadway tour production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in my city. Earlier today, I was watching The Grinch movie.
I grew up watching how the grinch stole Christmas, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, and home alone among a bunch of others during December each year. Great childhood memories
There's some things we know about The Grinch, I even remember that he wasn't always green like in the special and movies. I remember that The Grinch along with the Whos are white in the book plus we all know the makeup Jim Carrey has when he played The Grinch made him uncomfortable.🎁🎄
His first book was filled with acceptable racial stereotypes of the time. They were based on his political cartoons. There was quite a stir several years ago to get his first book banned. They succeeded. When moved into the purely imaginary imagery it was a bit much for the editors. I think they feared the books looked too much like he was on drugs. Remember he was a pioneer in children's literature. He paved the way for authors like Ronald Dahl.
In the 2000 live action of The Grinch, when The Mayor says Cindy hadn’t grown into her Who-nose yet was because since Taylor Momsen (who played Cindy) was only 6 years old, she was too young by Hollywood regulations to wear prosthetic makeup so what the writers ✍️ did to show us why was that they had to write ✍️ a line in the script to explain that the Whos grow into their noses as they age to justify why Cindy Lou Who doesn’t have the same nose as her adult co-stars.
They have a sequel to the how the Grinch stole Christmas book and it’s called how the Grinch lost Christmas and they changed the black-and-white version to the color full version of how the Grinch stole Christmas book now
Both Dr. Seuss and Chuck Jones were good friends in real life during their time when the former was serving in World War II and the latter was working at Warner Bros where his fellow soldiers were visiting to create animated propaganda films, so I'm assuming Mr. Geisel didn't want any other person to adapt his Grinch book into animated form except that of his friend Chuck himself.
OK I love this story. It was one of my favorites when I was growing up I have the book that my mom got for me Apple library. It was amazing how this character hated Christmas.
I think they went with green because it’s so often associated with bad things in cartoons. Bad smells, the color characters turn when they feel sick,Marvin the Martian, and others. That association continues to this day. Oscar the Grouch, Nickelodeon Slime, the Riddler, etc. Besides it was a Christmas Special if the grinch was going to be dressed as Santa in red then the other Christmas color is green.
11:45 Yep. At Universal Studios Hollywood. Every time you took the tram tour, you got to drive through Whoville. I don't think it's there anymore, I believe they took it out just before or around the pandemic. Tour guide mentioned they bleached and shredded newspaper for snow.
If I may, I believe there are some other things that you don’t know about the Grinch like in the book. They don’t tell us his backstory like they do when one of the movies so I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be something mentioned on this list.
A common question about the 2000 Jim Carrey movie is why Cindy Lou’s (Taylor Momsen) stocking is so small. The answer is symbolism. Cindy Lou is a love and togetherness advocate surrounded by commercialists and materialists, speaking to an empty void. She feels so small in such a huge town, so her stocking is small
If you're ever in Massachusetts check out the Dr. Suess museum in Springfield. (Western MA about 2 hours from Albany NY and abiut 1.5 hours from Boston.)
According to his biography, Dr. Seuss barely tolerated the 1966 special, feeling it padded out the story with irrelevant gags (and those wonderful songs for which he wrote the lyrics). He'd have been horrified by all subsequent versions.
Have a happy monday night Oh Kirsten dear Here's my comment For your holiday cheer I send you my blessing, from God i can tell And greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Because Hollywood doesn't have many original ideas. Many writers have seen how their stories are destroyed and refuse to let Hollywood near them. The few truly original ideas are children's movies from Pixar and DreamWorks.
You forgot to mention that the soundtrack to the 2000 movie had featured songs by the top recording artists of the day, such as Faith Hill, Barenaked Ladies, and Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five. Also, some people might not know this, but when the actress who had played Cindy Lou Who, Taylor Momsen, had grown up, she'd gone punk. Weird, huh? 😳
So, if we waterboard Jim Carrey, he will just laugh it off because it's nothing compared to what he had to go through in order to make the grinch movie?
It’s my sisters birthday today! I know his costume was trouble but so was the cowardly lions costume! but the grinch is one of my favourite performances from Jim Carey
Yes i only watch the original i think i might have watched a few minutes of the jim carrey one and was not interested just from those few minutes. Also i didn't even try to watch the 2018 cartoon one cause why mess with perfection again?

The original animation one also the only adaptation that follows the story book exactly perfectly
Jim Carrey is hilarious as the 2000 Grinch. In one word: *OVERACTOR!*
As a superfan of Boris Karloff, I pledge allegiance to the 1966 Chuck Jones classic.
Thurl Ravenscroft also played one of the Singing Busts on Haunted Mansion at the various Disney parks.
I just watched that today!
Boris Karloff was the narrator
with a name like Thurl Ravenscroft, it would only seem natural to have a voice like that.
@alienkreeper you'll hear his singing voice in movies like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and many others
It was Chuck Jones that after hearing him do an audition of "You're a mean one Mr Grinch" told Seuss that anyone that could sing the name Grinch in a full octive to hire them

And he is pure perfection as the Grinch, so much so that I cannot accept any other alternative.
“Then, he GOT an Idea - An AWFUL Idea The Grinch GOT a WONDERFUL, AWFUL Idea!”
“I KNOW What To DO….”
The most EVIL MOMENT In Dr. Seuss HISTORY!!
My fav quote is and they'll sing and they'll sing and sing, sing, sing, sing, sing.
I can say I’m HAPPY that you didn’t mention The Mean One. Not only that it’s a horror Christmas movie for adults but I don’t think Dr. Seuss would be proud, including Chuck Jones
Imo, the OG 1966 cartoon and the live action Grinch will always be my go to movies for Christmas.
I agree with you if you mean the live action with Jim Carrey.
@ThomasEhrlich-fc8nj yes, that's what I was saying is the live action version with Jim Carrey.
Excellent and interesting list. Boris was so perfect as the Grinch and narrator. Fun fact, Thurl Ravenscroft also voiced the deep bass Russian blue cat in "The Aristocats".
As well as the lead singing bust in "The Haunted Mansion" at the Disney theme parks.
He was also Kirby the vacuum cleaner in The Brave Little Toaster.
In the Christmas month Grinch gonna steal Christmas
He basically has… have you seen his popularity now? People like him more than Santa 😂😂
13:05 oh no! SHE'S SPEAKING IN RHYME!!!!
BLAST YOU WHOS!!!

I’m literally watching the Live action How the Grinch stole Christmas 😂❤
Poor Jim Carey having to tolerate the amount of hours in the makeup chair to play the Grinch
I can’t imagine. The furry costume plus all the green makeup like wow
Though honestly one day I’d love to try having someone body makeup me to make my tattoos not visible just so I can see what I look like with plain skin again. I’m 41 now and been with ink since I was 17 haha have plenty of them too
Oh yeah, doing all that work for $20 million. Just awful
*sarcasm heavily implied*
The only other actor that I know that compares was Ron Peralman when he did Beauty and the Beast. He also had 2 hour makeup sessions.
Removing the makeup apparently took just as much time. That makes for very long days.
49: WHOA, WHOA! Those are big names to play The Grinch but honestly, no one plays The Grinch better like Jim Carrey does
The Grinch is my brother’s favorite Christmas special
you forgot to mention that his book was adapted into a stage musical, especially after his appearance in Seussical.
Just watched the original cartoon with my mom. Such a classic ❤
I loved watching how the grinch stole Christmas, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer and home alone during December like all month when I was growing up!
In The original book The Grinch was portrayed as having White fur, but when the book was republished for its full color edition, The Grinch has his trademark green fur.
Cindy Lou Who in the live action now sings and plays guitar for The Pretty Reckless.
While I generally like Howard's work, I greatly disliked his adaptation. Part of it was the adult content, but parts of the script made no sense. In my opinion, they tried way too hard to make you hate the mayor. The only thing I liked about it was the "Where Are You Christmas?" song.

The Mean one was better than the first live action movie
Last Friday, my work Secret Santa got me the movie I had asked for, the 2018 version of The Grinch, with Benedict Cumberbatch. That night I saw the Broadway tour production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in my city. Earlier today, I was watching The Grinch movie.
Thanks for this one. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of my fave books & animated X'mas Specials.
Henry Gibson was great as Max in Grinch Night.
I think Frank Welker did good too
i LOVE jim carrey as the grinch,i cant see anyone else playing him but jim carrey
Yeah Jim Carrey is great. I do prefer the animated one but the live action with Carrey is awesome too in a different way though
The Grinch is one of my top ten favourite Christmas characters, although my top favourite is definitely Ebenezer Scrooge.
I always felt that Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch had a lot in common.
I Love Dr Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas and I also Love the TV Special and You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch Sung by Thurl Ravenscroft
50: I’ve heard that Dr. Seuss was regected many times for trying to publish his books and I find that ridiculous. I love his books since I was a kid
Yeah that’s wild! One of my favorite ever suess books is the sneetches

The fact the kids teasing the Grinch also hadn't grown into their noses, helped sell the idea.
The grinch is my favorite Christmas story 💚💚💚
I prefer the animated version's of how the Grinch stole Christmas over the live-action version of how the Grinch stole Christmas
Awesome! I never knew any of this!
Under one hour
👇
Green with envy ? 😂
What about some of the releases of How the Grinch Stole Christmas where the Grinch was inexplicably rotten egg yellow?
They have a sequel to the how the Grinch stole Christmas book and it’s called how the Grinch lost Christmas and they changed the black-and-white version to the color full version of how the Grinch stole Christmas book now
I wish they would give us the Phil Hartman Grinch on dvd. Its almost as good as Boris Karloff's and the actor deserves to be remembered
5:20 This is one of the best jokes in the movie
The original Grinch cartoon scared the crap out of my as a kid lol
I watch all three Grinch movies every year!! love the Jim Carey Grinch
the best though.
Shoutout to my ex who loved this character, miss u and wish you well😢
Ron Howard also put on the Grinch makeup for one day on the set.
I think they went with green because it’s so often associated with bad things in cartoons. Bad smells, the color characters turn when they feel sick,Marvin the Martian, and others. Oscar the Grouch, Nickelodeon Slime, the Riddler, etc. Besides it was a Christmas Special if the grinch was going to be dressed as Santa in red then the other Christmas color is green.
The Green Goblin will be a good Grinch for Spiderman.
Jim Carey to The Grinch is like Robin Williams to The Genie. No one could do the role better.
Ron howard first cut of grinch was almost 4 hours long, and that is a true fact
11:45
Yep. At Universal Studios Hollywood. Every time you took the tram tour, you got to drive through Whoville. I don't think it's there anymore, I believe they took it out just before or around the pandemic. Tour guide mentioned they bleached and shredded newspaper for snow.
Thurl Ravenscroft sang the famous song, but never received any accolades. Boris Karloff found out and ran a one page advertisement.
If I may, I believe there are some other things that you don’t know about the Grinch like in the book. They don’t tell us his backstory like they do when one of the movies so I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be something mentioned on this list.
I am the Grinch and I said I hate Christmas, I was walking around the city and I can’t move an inch all the damn people will not budge
(Western MA about 2 hours from Albany NY and abiut 1.5 hours from Boston.)
you’re a mean one Mr grinch
Dr Seuss must be turning over in his grave ever since the release of that bootleg Grinch horror movie a few years ago.
When I watch the Grinch animated special I think of Tom and Jerry Tom as the Grinch and Jerry as Max.
Did Seuss intend for the Grinch to be green back when he was without color in the original book or did Seuss imagine that he was a different color?
Dr Seuss also cheated on his dying wife with his mistress, who he later married. Never forget
According to his biography, Dr. Seuss barely tolerated the 1966 special, feeling it padded out the story with irrelevant gags (and those wonderful songs for which he wrote the lyrics). He'd have been horrified by all subsequent versions.
4:04 Is that Giesel's voice?
Have a happy monday night
Oh Kirsten dear
Here's my comment
For your holiday cheer
I send you my blessing, from God i can tell
And greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Nothing beats the original animation. Haven't figured out why they do so many unnecessary remakes.
Because Hollywood doesn't have many original ideas. Many writers have seen how their stories are destroyed and refuse to let Hollywood near them.
The few truly original ideas are children's movies from Pixar and DreamWorks.
There actually is a sequel to the original '57 book published posthumously by Seuss.
I ❤ the school uniforms in the live action movie . 😊❤
Jim Carey’s grinch was the creepiest
You thought he was creepy? Nah…I’d say more like eccentric.
Okay but whostiens is hilarious 😂
I thought so too 😂
Ted would have probably admired Jim-s performance even if he would have not practically liked the movie.
How Newt Gingrich stole Christmas
Ted would have probably admired Jim's performance even if he probably wouldn't have liked the movie.😊😊
The Grinch probably wouldn't have liked it either 😂
You forgot to mention that the soundtrack to the 2000 movie had featured songs by the top recording artists of the day, such as Faith Hill, Barenaked Ladies, and Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five.
Also, some people might not know this, but when the actress who had played Cindy Lou Who, Taylor Momsen, had grown up, she'd gone punk. Weird, huh? 😳
This better be good
I actually saw The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat before I saw the Christmas special
I only like the original 1966 grinch.
#6 All that would've been hilarious
So dr Seuss is a multiverse 😂
So, if we waterboard Jim Carrey, he will just laugh it off because it's nothing compared to what he had to go through in order to make the grinch movie?
Here's what I think if Jim Carrey did not get the role I think Robin Williams could have gotten it when he was still alive. What do you think people?
He was a relative of mine (Thurl)
No shit, really? What was the relation?
Hi Kirsten have a great day and love your voice 😍
Critics are calling Red One an awful flop
The classic one is my #1 favorite along with the cartoon one that came out a few years ago. Didn't care for the live action one.
5:37
Prefer the Boris Karloff narrated special than they live action movie
I just got through watching Grinch regardless.
It’s my sisters birthday today!
I know his costume was trouble but so was the cowardly lions costume!
but the grinch is one of my favourite performances from Jim Carey
I can't see the Grinch as any other color.
Sad they didnt mention how film theory deduced hes misophonic
Sad they didnt mention how film theory deduced ges musiphonic
...i thought the grinch did end on a religious note..
Ask me what happened.
Wasn't Theodor Geisel Jewish?
Too bad that Carrey Ruined the franchise with his nut job take on the character
I refuse to watch the Jim Carrey version. He is just way too over the top. The book and the original cartoon are the only ones for me.
I'm with you 100% on that!
Yes i only watch the original i think i might have watched a few minutes of the jim carrey one and was not interested just from those few minutes. Also i didn't even try to watch the 2018 cartoon one cause why mess with perfection again?
@MsMojo the 2000 version
