- The Post Office has spent over £250 million on legal fees related to the Horizon IT scandal, nearly matching the compensation paid to victims.
Freedom of Information Act data shows the company paid £256.9 million to law firms and barristers over the past decade. Meanwhile, £261 million in compensation had been paid to victims by July.
The legal costs include defending a High Court case brought by 555 subpostmasters, led by Sir Alan Bates.
Alex Phillips speaks with former subpostmaster, Tim Bretnall.

My friend was a sub postmistress, she was completely traumatised by what happened to her, and is suffering all over again because of the way she's being dealt with. It's disgusting.
Paula Vennells needs to be sent to jail. She has been a vital part of the cover up resulting in many innocent people going to prison
It shouldn’t stop with compensation. It stops when the likes of Paula Vennells, David Courtley, Angela van den Bogard et al are behind bars. Anything short of a lengthy custodial sentence for these perjuring con artists will be a disgrace.
These lengthy inquiries are always the same - a can kicking exercise to make sure the guilty never get to see the inside of a jail.
These people have been wronged.FFS pay them thier money, and accept accountability for the injustice you have inflicted on them.
Taxpayer owned, NOT "Government".
Paula Venells must pay back £2.2 Million she received in a bonus.......She failed 100%.
Tim I , for one, sincerely hope you will be compensated in the very near future for this atrocity. It is downright horrendous that you and many many others are still being kept ‘hanging on’.
What makes you think there'll ever be true justice?
Justice delayed is justice denied !!!!!
24hs for demonstration thugs to get punished "rightly so" she gets
2 tier justice from FAR LEFT 2 TIER HEIR KIER
When they said 'you're the only one' - that was a lie. When that was reported in the legal process and in court that was perjury, and that is a jailable offence in law.
If Vennells had any honour,, she would not be here tomorrow
Tony blair signed off horizon in 1999,knowingly told it had bugs/faults before hand ,teflon tony again
Starmer has blood on his hands for this scandal as I recall
Done under the tories. Rip van Winkle.
I think he may have been in CPS or similar not sure but this is what the commenter may be referring to?
@@user-ln3lh2pz8h Wasn't it the Blair government who initiated the Horizon software in the first place?
Would channel 4 have done the doc if labour was in power
I hope all the big bonuses that the senior management pay it back I hope 2 tier kier stands by his wrong doers
" I hope 2 tier kier stands by his wrong doers" Why do you want Starmer to support the Post Office?
"Full force of the law". Where did I here that?
Alex - it was covered up by: (i) Fujitsu (iI) Post Office and their staff. They took the easy path to steam roller the weaker party, the Sub postmasters. A few good men, saved the Sub post masters by working hard on their behalf. They were met with lies from all ranks in the POst Office. Deceitful people working for themselves. They were also incompetant. No skills to do the job.
Why is she not in jail
Unleash police and legal system on some people protesting, but let this issues drag on for decades
Our political classes are rotten through and through
Funny when it's the other way about it seems to drag out a bit.
Don' expect Turkeys to vote for charismas
SOLD OFF by TORIES more like. Nothing they HAD privatized WORKS! well and share holders REAP the rewards not any other.
Post office was NOT privatised at all. RMG was.
Google@charlieleedham5265 Google Tony blair /horizon , and it shows blair knew it had bugs etc but still signed it off
@@GaneshJU Apparently shares were sold of by Tories and Liberals!!
Thought it was Paul McCartney for a second
You'd think Tim Brentnall would have more sense by now than to keep saying he "paid it back": If you never took it - how are you "paying it back ?
That’s the phrasing they used at the time…….
“Pay it back to avoid a theft charge”
@@wierdhead1000 The Post Office used those words because they claimed that the SPMs had stolen the money. But for a SPM to say they "paid it back" is stupid - because it sounds as though they are admitting that they took it.
Glad to know you think I’m “stupid”
@@wierdhead1000 Did I say that you are stupid? I said that for a SUB POST MASTER to say they "paid it back" is stupid when the entire point of the Horizon scandal is that they didn't take any money in the first place. However, if you can't follow a simple sentence, then yes - you are.
Intellectual prostitution is very well paid, but why?
Can you talk about labour or conservatives as some of us believe one or the other can correct the mistakes of one or the other! And stop advocating for a system change and implying it's a criminal system!
some of us just want to hear the normal stuff! LOL
Someone should censor the state media! LOL
You sound extremely immature
Never heard alex complain so much about the last 14 years
Its 2 tier garbage spouting from talk tv. Awful peopl
stick lawyers on fixed fee of 11.40 per hour like most people in this country
Thanks for this entertaining video!🦋
