Lyrics
Blank face in the windowpane
Made clear in seconds of light
Disappears and returns again
Counting hours, searchingthe night
Might be waiting for someone
Might be there for us to see
Might be in need of talking
Might be staring directly at me
Inside plays a lullaby
Slurred voice over children cries
On the inside
Haunting loneliness in the eye
Skin covering a secret scar
His hand is waving a goodbye
There's no response or action returned
There is deep prejudice in me
Outshines all reason inside
Given dreams all ridden with pain
And projected unto the last

Hours of wealth

Perfect description.
I always felt like Damnation is Opeth's «Jar of Flies».
Totally agreed
That makes so much sense now that you mention it.
Good take
Wow that's what I think about this album actually
¿What does that mean? ¿Is it an english expression or an album?

Their stuff is light, poignant, sad, heavy, dark, intense, even a bit twisted but there is always an element of beauty. That solo stuff from 4:37 fwd, gets me choked up. Mikael Akerfeldt is a master songwriter, great guitarist, singer, extraordinary talent that comes along once in a lifetime.
1 billion percent agree. That was very well said, my friend.

The best Silent Hill track without even being a Silent Hill track
My thoughts exactly. This is the unofficial Silent Hill 2 soundtrack.

I thought I was the only one who thinks this sounds like a silent hill soundtrack.

This. My wife cannot stand metal, then I put this, My Time Of Need, and Hope Leaves on and it changed her tune ^_^
When I first heard Damnation was a soft album I was like "lol that's kinda lame".
When I actually heard the album for the first time I realized that it wasn't a soft album technically. Like, it's soft sound wise, but the overall feel of it is just oppressively, but it's lyrically their heaviest. Like, it's the musical equivalent of a dying old man reflecting on his failures. This album alone made me love Opeth more than I already did.
This was my first contact with the whole band. I agree with the lyrics and beautiful compositions with a sound engineering that supports the lyrics. I think
mine as well! and now i prefer the "slowpeth" as my friend called it
Calling music "soft" is the biggest cancer of the metal head community. Hard/soft doesn't matter when the music is incredible.
Totally feel this comment
I began with damnation never looked back
The final guitar solo is one of the best out there in the heavy metal world. Heck, It's one of the best out there, period. So so beautiful.

Woke up with a pounding headache today. It's the first day of fall. It's been lightly raining. I've been looking out my window and drinking cups of hot coffee, and this song immediately came to mind. ❤
eerily similar story here, three days after you posted your comment. Beginning of fall, woke up at 5 AM today, pitch black outside and pouring rain, had too much coffee yesterday, have a headache presumably from poor sleep quality due to caffeine's effects on sleep. I thought "I should re-listen to Windowpane by Opeth. See if I can recapture the feelings I had when I discovered this song for the first time seven years ago." Welp, I only recaptured 50% of those feelings. This is probably my 100th re-listen to this song by this point, literally. At least, on this listen, I was able to pay attention to the choice of instruments a little more. I paid attention to the song structure a little more, noting that there are two guitar soloes, and that neither is technically difficult but is extremely moving and classy nonetheless. And that the violins/double bass and the "choir" in the background at certain parts in this song tremendously add to its already classy, moving vibe. Musically, it seems the Swedes and Brits can do no wrong. Akerfeldt is a genius and Steven Wilson is too. ❤from the USA.
I remember reading an interview with Mikael where he mentioned the lyrical inspiration for this song.
He was out partying with some friends one night, and on the way home at like 3 AM he happened to see an old man looking out from a window. Nothing else happened, but he started to imagine what that man's life might be like and wrote these lyrics. It's basically about loneliness and the many (often older) people society forgets about.
I always thought "Happiness is a warm gun" by The Beatles was the main inspiration. The guitar and vocals sound very much alike and there's even a reference to a windowpane in the Beatles song.
Gave me chills!
This song has some of the most beautiful and well written guitar work Ive ever heard.
i was listening to this song in my first day of medical school , now that i heard it , i remembered every detail about that day , a song can take you places ....
@The Genius you're supposed to be a genius dude
Fatima Zayoun i can relate to this heavy. Certain songs take me back to my child hood and I remember it so clearly
Yeah e.g. You are not alone by Micheal Jackson takes me back to primary seven (northern Ireland system) I'm in second year of high school(Northern ireland system)
Funny. Eyes wide open by King crimson reminds me of my first day of elec engineering undergrad.
Why weren't you listening to the lecture though? I pity your patients now!
this song kidnaps my soul away from my body and into an infinite space where nothing but emotion exist. No logic, No thinking, Just feeling. First time i listened to this song was 2010, never had a device since then where it wasn't downloaded. This isn't a song, It's a drug. Everything is so perfectly crafted, The instruments clash with each other with so much unison and coordination, and the voice of Mikael Åkerfeldt is so soothing and powerful at the same time, i can feel the words he is saying, and they're only heightened by the angelic melancholy of this beautiful symphony.
It is a shame. This song, it's quality. It feels like serious injustice that only a few millions have heard this song, It should be held at the same regard that genius musicians are. I will never stop listening to this song, it has captured my heart, and i feel it will only release it after another masterpiece like this comes out. So far, none have made my ears tear up like this song has. Thank You Opeth, This song may not be popular, but know that the people that listen to it, have nothing less than love and appreciation for this masterpiece.

I bought this album 15 years ago, alongside Blackwater Park on a suggestion from a friend as I was getting into metal.
I could not have been any more fortunate at the time than to find this band. I cried and laughed to this album for no particular reason, the sound took the drivers seat, and I was just strung along with the absolute beauty of the compositions.
Thanks, Opeth.

Before Opeth I could not listen growling metal one bit. This kind of using of perfect harmonies with mixture of different kinds of emotions in music really caught me. And yes this album and this song was crucial for me to getting used to the band's style and then moving on to Blackwater park and Ghost reveries which became even a bigger favorite for me than this album. What a band, none other is good at this level of progressive metal which is not just bout rhytm but really getting the amount of depth to a one song.

so true, i learned them today and i got tool vibes
@@giorgosntomaris3371 As a massive tool fan, I disagree. I always thought Opeth had their completely unique sound.
@@thewildhealer541 I agree with you both! I have talked about my ideas about this quite a bit and I think that the reason that they are so similiar is that both Tool and Opeth are incredibly versatile in their arrangements, but they both have 100% nailed their heavy sound and the transitions from that into the lighter parts, and back. They sound like two branches in opposite directions, but formed the same pattern. So 2 completely different versions of the same amazing musical accomplishment. That's the best way I can describe it. :)
@@h4xo7 Yeah, that I can agree with. They are both masters at arrangements, going from heavy to light parts. But sound wise, completely different. I had a hard time getting into Tool, except for a few songs like Vicarious, The Pot etc.. the easy listening stuff. Now I believe Lateralus to be one of the best albums of all time when I became more patient (No pun intend) with listening to them. But I was always a fan of Opeth since I was a kid honestly.
