  • Rats can be trained to act in movies just like cats and dogs, but working with a pack of rodents on a film set requires someone with a lot of organizational skills and a close attention to detail. More specifically, a rat trainer needs to be able to identify a rat's personality, strengths, and weaknesses to be able to cast them in the best possible role. To find out exactly what it takes to train rats for movies, we spoke with Mark Harden, a senior trainer at Animals for Hollywood, who worked with 300 rats on "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and 600 on the 2003 horror film "Willard."

    Rats are incredibly intelligent and affectionate. They are actually very clean. They constantly clean themselves and do not like to live in dirty enclosures. They also like to spend time with their humans and are less likely to bite than other rodents like hamsters or gerbils. I had a number of rescue rats over the years and they were great pets. They liked to sit on our laps and watched TV with us :)

    Not biters - chewers. The chewers they showed were Gambian pouched rats, which - fun fact - are trained to detect land mines. It’s not a common pet breed. The rodents they showed at 0:51 were gerbils.
    And yes, rats will go inside your clothes, given the chance. It’s their sanctuary. They love sleeves, sheets, boxes.

    As a pet rat owner nothing is less scary than a bunch of rats swarming about.

    I just hope they’re treated humanely and not abused

      Why do you automatically have to assume that they're abused?

    • @CoasterHorizons
      @CoasterHorizons 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sandraswan9008 because there’s more animal abuse out there that people think. People and businesses that pretend to care about animals actually don’t. Take PetSmart for example

      It seems like he really loves his rats, in my opinion. They're very intelligent, they have individual personalities, he seems to understand them on a really deep level. He strikes me as the kind of person who would call them his children :)

    • @CoasterHorizons
      @CoasterHorizons 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sav6495 yeah, I really hope so. It’s a shame that a lot of people say they love animals and end up abusing them, whether they know it or not. Animals are better than humans, I can guarantee that. He seems like he cares, which is good

      Same thought.... it sounds like they're housed together in large numbers, if competition for food can be a problem (which it sounds like the trainers try to deal with). I only hope they all have enough space to stretch their legs!

  • @flordelphinta

    Usually that many rats would need a high amount of feed. But trained rats could just eat what they killed.
    So if any hostile people attack you, just let the rats attack them.
