But bells should be only rung when you are inviting god to have prasad.
This was told to me by the temple priest.

I am not expert but this is what I think.
Maybe the priest was irriated by sound. Maybe you were ringing the bell way too much or many people were frequently ringing it in a non harmonious manner.
Heavy bell ringing happens during pooja. So he might have suggested the same.
