  • Join me as I stroll around my Daimler 4.0 (Jaguar XJ6 XJ40) and marvel and its shambolic state. Yes, I really did pay actual money for this car!
    To be fair, it was really nice, once upon a time. Later, I start the engine and end up wishing I hadn't...

    It's interesting what neglect will do to a car like this. I bought a '92 when I was about 22ish, 141k miles, 4.0l manual! It had similar rot around the bulkhead and wings, but far more of the electrics worked and all the bits of interior were still bolted on. Ruinously expensive to run on £15k a year (mainly fuel, parts were quite affordable), but amazingly cheap to buy (which I reckon is why a lot were neglected).
    Daily drove it for a year, and occasional use for a couple of years after before I managed to overheat the engine one day by leaving it running to charge the battery and not noticing it had a pinhole leak in one of the coolant pipes. Blown headgasket and rod knock. Amazing. Oh, and set light to the boot when it was half-full of petrol while trying to drain water out of the fuel tank...
    So it sat looking sorry for itself for a couple more years (although I did manage to procure another AJ6 for it), until a mate of mine bought a remapped E46 330d. Lightbulb moment as I realised just how nice the XJ40 would be with a meaty, but still refined, 3.0l turbodiesel. Bought a rotten 330d and set to work :) it's not a million miles away from being sorted now, but if anyone's interested I've got a build thread here: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/216608/1992-jaguar-xj40-superturbodiesel Oh, and if anyone's wondering about the AJ6 and 5-speed I'm planning to try and wedge that into a Triumph 2000, because why not ;)
    Also also if anyone has one of these. The rust under the corners of the windscreen pillars is caused by these little box section dividers that are sealed into the scuttle panel, and the area filled with silicone sound deadening foam. There's a rubber grommet giving access in the corners of the bulkhead on the engine side. If you excavate all of the foam from here, and drill a hole diagonally into the little divider to let the box sections drain you can save yourself a windscreen replacement. If the foam comes out clean then happy days, but if it's stained orange then it's been rusting in there and you probably need to at the very least clean it, soak it in phosphoric acid for ages, and then paint the whole thing up again (if you're lucky enough that it hasn't broken through). A similar issue causes the rust on the c-pillars which are also filled with sound deadening foam. You can get to these through the boot, where there's some bolt on panels that close off the boot underneath the wing (with the looms poking through them). Bit trickier to get to, but excavating these bits would also be a pretty good idea. Or at least excavating a drain pathway through them.

    Please please no more, it's bringing back horrible memories! Mine ceased to proceed (sadly not an isolated incident) the day my wife went in to labour. I kept the jaguar garage loan car, which was a golf GTI (that says it all) for 3 weeks. The garage eventually asked for their car back and returned my Jaguar.....I wished I kept the Golf. Still i love my classic proper XJ6! Great video.

      @Delta Fox Didn't know that, but it is true that the cars' build quality isn't what it once was (Mercedes used to be legendary for build quality at one time).
      I had a ride in a Mercedes S-class (350 Diesel) this year and was taken aback to find that the so-called "veneer" dashboard trim wasn't solid and certainly wasn't wood; I could push it in as there was nothing but air behind it.

      Mercs were more reliable than hags and Daimler s in the 70's aa Mercs could sustain constant 70 effortlessly but jags found it difficult to without having problems
      If someone had said in the 70's when jags and Daimler had two fuel raps to fill that jags would be electric in 2020 owners would have laughed but technology has moved on a bundle as has design

    And now I only desire XJ40/81 more than ever.
    It's my dream car since early childhood and still the most favourite and desirable not only just an XJ, but the most beloved Jag ever - even while literally every Jag is my dream on its own. It could be said, 2nd gen XJ hands-down is my beloved car among any other car in the automotive history. It's more precious than other Jags - even the '63 S-Type, 420, Series I XJ, X350 XJR, Series III Eagle or XJ-S/XJS, than any 911 - even the G-serie 911, than any Alfa - even the GTV6, than Saab 900... All these mentioned cars - including some other - I give all of them my 10 out of 10. While that rusty, unfortunate, unreliable but still glorious cat easily gets mine one extra point from the very bottom of heart of mine. I admire that boxy sleek thing. I adore that ridiculous 2-spoke steering wheel. I've even saw it once with my very eyes: grey Soverein RHD, probably '90. God that thing is low and long and wide! Even with two flat right tires and a couple of rust on literally every corner and edge, staying outside under the sun and rain it was still looked like a king, better than any car parked near him or driving on the roads past him.
    I'd even buy a few scrapped Jags and learn to proper bodyworking - incl. cutting and welding - only to make one decent car. We're not gonna say that Frankenstein monster will surely fall apart by these welding points, are we? Totally electric and engine rebuild, total body restore, tons of money, hundreds of hours. But who cares in the end? What a sane man would rather think about buying Camry while sitting in V12 Daimler? C'mon mate, you're in the bloody Jaaaag.
    4.0 is still awesome, anyways. But V12 is something entirely different thing.

    Lovely! The rough tickover is just a symptom of the knackered lambda sensor isn't it? Is it ok when warm?

    • @HubNut

      Lambda doesn't kick in until it's warm. It keeps going very, very rich - the plugs come out black. I think the temp sensor may be duff.

    I wonder what state the others that are still on the road are in? It will be a shame when all these disappear if they haven't done already. Given that this was a later example I suspect most will have similar rust issues. I wonder if anything could have been done to stop area around the windscreen rusting?

    This is a prime example of why you should never buy a car blind. I've had a few XJ40's, paid way less than £350 for some and not much more for others. All been decent cars, some better than others but I inspected every one before I parted with any cash.

    • @neilwalsh4058
      @neilwalsh4058 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HubNut I've never bought blind, not brave enough but I've probably missed out on some real bargains. 10 years ago you could buy a good, cheap Jag. I won a gorgeous XJ40 3.2S on an ebay auction for £535, but I'd viewed and test drove it before bidding.
      My weaknesses are not being able to resist stuff that seems too good to be true and buying the first example I see.
      Bought a poverty spec XJ40 (with plastic wheel trims!) from North Wales, full of water from a leaking sunroof for £150. It promptly failed a few miles from the seller and was brought home on an AA recovery truck, proving you can't guarantee anything even if you've seen it and driven it before buying!

    I have a 1990 E30 325i, it has never been garaged as far as I'm aware, and has 200,000 miles on the clock, but absolutely everything (bar the stupid hydraulic headlight angle adjuster) works and it is in much better condition than this thing. It definitely looks like the owners stopped caring about this car some time ago, which is sad. :(

      Acme ~ miss my e30 tourer alpina engined (engine swap) chasis had 360,000 before head went so we put that in.... but at mot it needed 2k worth of work and we just didn't have the cash. Its still alive. Its a track car now. H591 XUL if anyone wants to try and find her. 2.7 alpina engine. Kept 2 litre gearbox. Acceleration was instant and still hit 130 and it was chipped to rev to 8k instead of 6.5k. Totally stripped. Rare front splitter off of hartge... black. Lowered stiffened and strut braced (properly!) Really well known car in wiltshire area (was) ~ had a personality. If a boy racer in a corsa over took it didn't matter how much you mashed that big pedal..."ellie" didn't wanna know... wasnt worth the fuel.... but when a TT came along....it suddenly decides its gonna tear it up! ~ go figure?

    Well youve ticked the Jag box now so alls well that ends well. Bought an x300 sovereign a while back for 600 quid, kept it till the mot was up and moved it on for 300. Was happy with that just to tick the Jag box. Good cars and smooth as but was just a mess of switches etc and a bit boring to drive tbh. My old e32 735 from the same era is a way better car, better built and much better to drive so still got it. A Jag is a Jag i always think👍

      @thrillseekanz7874 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting hearing that, based on owning an E32 735 and knowing what utter disasters those cars are the Jag must be next level. The only good euro from those days was the W124, that you can actually rely on.

  • @Swallabat

    Whilst they give problems, you'll notice the car got you home with little drama... I laughed as you struggled with the seat belt, (they ALL do that, sir) and noted that you had pretty much all the standard xj40 foibles like the melting side fuse box, sagging roof lining, fuel fail 44, rust in the usual places, and of course, partially inoperative climate control. Your diff sounded OK, which is a big win... BUT in 20 + years of driving these heaps, IME they ALWAYS get you home..
    But: if you buy what was a £50,000 motor car for 350 quid, you have to be prepared to invest a bit of time and effort to sort out the stuff that the previous owner couldn't. Most Daimler owners aren't technical types..

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, once the price gets low enough, they end up in the hands of people who can afford to buy, but not run a Jaguar. This one was horribly neglected.

    I owned an xj40 3.2 sovereign a few years back in the same colour combination. Absolutely the worst car I've ever purchased 100%. Purchased another running car to swap parts to get it running again and it ran for a week or so then started to cut out intermittently. Eventually I took it to a car show and tried to sell it for £300 just before I scrapped it but to no avail!

    You gets what you pay for, generally. Everything on this car is fixable, at reasonable cost if you know where to look. Do your research, learn a few skills(welding being an obvious one) and invest in some basic tools...probably the biggest issue is locating a 'space' to carry out the work. If you don't want to do that then best stick to the 'run if the mill' stuff thats out there......you also run the same risks when buying them....Great video(s) BTW loved the purchase process, the witty comments and as someone has already pointed out the car was full of 'Poshes'.... That did make me laugh...
