Can’t tell you how impressive it is to condense nearly 15 hours of an audiobook (comparing one spoken format to another) down to about an hour. Bravo!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hearing this all at once really shows how dark a tale this is. Almost all the characters have tragic flaws and come to bad ends, even the bad characters. Very few characters come out well. I remember reading a letter or something where Tolkien wrote that many of the themes of the whole work are variations on "Lead us not into temptation" and what that really means,
Isn't it, im reading it for the second time now. I tried not to get to tripped up on all the details. There is just to much to fully recognize and comprehend in just a few readings. I will say I watched this guys videos when I felt like I was really curious about something in particular. Hes got a video for every chapter of the book! Happy readings!
This video, while hasty and hurried, does the job very well of telling the story of The Silmarillion in haste and serves to clarify Pat's missed through wandering mind or misunderstanding of the archaic language style Tolkien used to deliver it. Superb video!
I'm really glad I randomly found your channel. I used to be a huge Tolkien fan when I was younger but ended up drifting away. Your videos are helping me get back into LOTR and Tolkien in general. It's funny how things come rushing back after so long. Thanks for sharing your passion and Cheers from Canada!
I'm surprised no major production studios have tried to adapt the silmarillion or at least the events leading up to and the war of wrath I mean imagine seeing earendil fighting ancalagon, feanor fighting an army of balrogs and fingolfin facing down and wounding Morgoth himself. I mean tv shows definitely have the budget what with the witcher and game of thrones existing
Incredible! 👏🏻 You summarized such a dense text so well. I finished The Silmarillion this week for my first time. Going through the whole book and watching your videos chapter by chapter along the way truly enriched my experience. Loved the book. Loved your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and understanding of Tolkien so well. Namárië.
So cool man. Thank you for bringing this to life for me...I have a much easier time learning aurally than by reading. Something about the Silmarillion that I am finding fills me with some awe and interest is how you get to see so many different sort of "archetypes" of how a person can be, based on their temperament and circumstances. It's interesting to me to see how different elves (and a few men) have such different ways of being in the world, and seem to have their own unique "configuration" of good and evil tendencies. It's interesting to me to look at how we love both Eärendil and Beren, but they are different... and how we might look less favorably on Turin (if I am naming the correct character) and of course Fëanor, and yet they are also different. It's interesting to me to see how Tolkien seems to enter into such an interesting dialogue about how creation itself, although coming from one place, seems to give rise to such complexity, and differentness, sometimes clashing. All I can say is that it is beautiful. Of course the stories of Beren and Luthien and also Eärendil are beautiful, but I also find the stories of say, Fëanor and Fingolfin's people crossing the Helcaraxë (I find that crossing so freaking cool and legendary by the way) beautiful as well, in a tragic way. I think the first age is really cool. Even though it is perhaps less human than the coming ages, I just love the richness of the legends and supernatural quality to it. Again, thanks 😁
One might mention that when the Dwarves decide not to give the finished product back to Thingol it is only part greed, but also partly because they don't acknowledge the fashion in which Thingol obtained the most perfect artifact produced by the Dwarven race.
This is Amazing.. BUT Glorfindels battle with the Balrog is LEGENDARY, not just some suicide. He fucks that Balrog up so bad, he even cuts it’s arm off, and ultimately he only dies because the Balrog grabs his hair as it falls. It’s such a Badass fight that he’s Resurrected and sent back to Middle Earth even more powerful, like Gandalf.
The only thing that would make this better is if you included a map that you could either physically or digitally use for locations. …..and maybe a family tree or list of names with basic titles / descriptions. …..OOOOH! And a basic timeline so we can see how many hundreds or thousands of years are between stuff.
Can you do one about what parts of the Silmarillion christopher had to substantially construct, and what that process may have involved, and the troubles of deciding what’s ultimately ‘canon’ etc? Forgive me if you’ve already addressed this, I’m just asking what’s on my mind haha
What exactly Christopher did and didn’t do is a tricky question, in part because not all the older drafts have been published, but I might be able to do something on the issue of canon.
Neither. He wasn’t allowed to return to mortal lands as a result of his going to Aman but that’s less a punishment than a natural consequence I think. But his sailing in the sky is different than not being allowed to return.
Do you think sauron could have been pardoned by Manwe and do you think Eonwe should have tried to do more to push Sauron to go back to valinor? I feel like it was a huge misstake by Eonwe to just tell him to go and ask forgiveness from manwe and not encourage him more. Maby a theme for another great vid :)
Well given the compressed nature of the narrative it’s not clear how much or how little Eonwe tried to convince him. As for whether Manwe could have pardoned him, I think he could have, but I think Sauron was onto something in thinking he would at least impose some form of punishment.
@@TolkienLorePodcast i wish more would have been writen for that segment, It could have been a really interesting insight to Sauron and how he interacted with a maia like Eonwe. It also could have been a glimbs into mairon. Like you said Sauron likely guessed right that a punishment waited for him in valinor and he probably knew from Morgoth what they did to him when he was captured. Still if we know Manwe right the punishment would likely not have been very severe for a guy that had done the deeds that sauron had. Thank you for ypur great Tolkien content🔥

They don't own the rights to it that's why they can't do that.
There's an Amazon TV series coming up covering some parts of the 2nd age (Númenor etc.)

You pronounced Ulmo almost like "Old Moe". ;-) More seriously, great summary. :-)
The Silmarillion: With a few notable exceptions, Elves are greedy, arrogant, easily duped, and irresponsible.
I guess they weren’t created noble and wise, just with the ability to obtain those traits, and time to reach that end.

Why Eonwe did not brought Sauron back to Aman by force?
He hid himself.
