Probably the most under rated drummers ever... and won't ever play again without his brother... that's my guess... he's done it all and doesn't need it anymore... good for him.
hopefully there are no health issues that are initiating the sale but more than likely after Ed's passing he took good look around and realized "I got too much Sh*t!"
I can understand this very well. Alex is 70 years old and retired. His brother passed away and he's just enjoying the time he's got left, and that doesn't necessarily have to do with playing drums or touring. And all those mega drumkits would bother me anyway, what do you do with all that stuff ? It only takes a lot of space and collects a lot of dust. All a drummer really needs is a 4 piece, and that's probably exactly what will stay in Alex' home. A simple 4 piece drumkit for him to practice and keep up his chops.
Steve Lukather and others have talked about approaching Alex over the years to play on stuff, and his response was always; “I only play with my brother.”
Musicians always play this game... Claim they're selling something super meaningful, but it's actually something they used for one tour or something, and they just don't want it. Pretty sure he has more than a couple sets.
I suspect that with Alex loosing his beloved brother, being 71 years old, and having a net worth of approximately (95 Million dollars), he probably doesn’t have the desire or interest in playing many of the “reminders” of what he and his brother created over 50 years ago. JMO
aye al wish i had the money to get one of your kits, you were the top notch drummer of all time,we miss eddie so much you were a great rock and roll team, good luck with sale your all time fan,and past time drummer myself, saw you guys at albany ny in 1997 great show as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AVH and his wife are devoted to equine therapy and most of the money from the auctions will go towards organizations that use horses as a way to help those who have suffered trauma.
And why wouldn't he? His brother has passed over. They were a unit. Why would he even want to play with anyone else apart from Eddie. Retirement would surely seem like a viable solution. Well done Al , and all the best to you and your family. . Thanks for the memories.
Alex can open a Ludwig drum store n probably have more stuff than the factory have in stocks, Rev Big Al bowing out like a true legend,, this is very few times l wish l has a chunk of cash sitting around b well worth it
He's probably done w\o Ed I get it -But decades of touring he's got tons and tons and tons of gear collecting dust I'm sure he's got his stash of a few things ... How do you follow THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN ??? Doubtful needs cash - lightning the load. Alex is a PREMIERE monster fucking drummer 👑👑👑
Some people are hoarders who feel uncomfortable getting rid of anything, and others are the opposite- for me it feels great to throw something away that I don't need. Many want to downsize and declutter as they get older.
It’s all just sitting around and he knows people will go nuts for it. It’s better to leave $$$ for your heirs instead of: you get that kit, you get a percentage of that song, you get a percentage of merchandise and so on.
AVH and his wife using the money from the auction to go towards equine therapy organizations. That is essentially centers that help those who have suffered trauma, care and train horses as part of their recovery process.
Alex isn't broke. He way to smart to ever let that happen. He's not a drug addict either. Why let all his gear sit and collect dust. Hell i would sell it to just to see some fans really enjoy it. You can't take with you when you depart this earth. So why not. I always wondered what the next tour kit would be every year.He never let let us down. They were amazing, as was he. V.H. Forever.
His net worth is almost $100 million so I don't think it's about money as much as it's a sign that he's not touring or producing anything without Eddie. So sad.
No. He doesn't need the money. He's paying a ton to keep it all in storage and he simply holds no sentimental value. He's giving over half the money away.

God love Alex …He knew music could never be the same without ED 😔
I bet he moves back to the Netherlands.
Np. He's staying put. He has 2 kids he doesn't want to move away from.
I don’t blame him at all.
My 1976 Ludwig Vistalites are signed by alex.
Steve Lukather and others have talked about approaching Alex over the years to play on stuff, and his response was always; “I only play with my brother.”
Love ya Al
He's washing his hands of the drum gear. He did it all, what more is there.
I want those roto toms from the jump video but now there $3500.00 and growing dam !

He's selling everything including his gold records.

He's in his 70s, right?
A "lot" of free stuff from his endorsements. Yet the bigger question remains where did he have the space to store all this stuff?
Alex can open a Ludwig drum store n probably have more stuff than the factory have in stocks, Rev Big Al bowing out like a true legend,, this is very few times l wish l has a chunk of cash sitting around b well worth it
he started with his brother and he finished with his brother- that pretty much sums it up.
Age and life hurdles , done is good as changes in life . Good for him
Is he selling “ALL” his drum kits or keeping one or two?
He's probably done w\o Ed I get it -But decades of touring he's got tons and tons and tons of gear collecting dust I'm sure he's got his stash of a few things ...
How do you follow THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN ???

Alex is a PREMIERE monster fucking drummer 👑👑👑
He probably hasn’t touched or even
Looked at a Drumkit since Eddie
Passed… Don’t blame him a bit.

Wow
My all time favorite drummer!!! VH forever!!!
At some point the drums don’t mean anything..

He is 70 but he should come out and do something. Foo Fighters, Sammy Hagar all those acts would welcome him onstage.
I wonder why he's selling everything ? He certainly doesn't need the money. I think putting his old gear in music museums would be better.
He might need the money. Several tours in the latter years where because he was low on green.

You would think he has money. But who knows maybe he's broke it certainly wouldn't be the first time someone made a huge amount of money and lost it.

I'm sure he will keep playing drums. Let's not assume anything.
