Man, this is the song that got me into jazz chord theory. First heard it from Norah Jones, and hers is my favorite. When I sat down to work out what she was playing, it just blew my mind wide open and now I see all these things everywhere
This is a wonderful song and you can sing, sure. I couldn't believe you chose this one for chord analysis. Here is a short personal story why. About 10 years ago I heard Elmar Braß Trio in Munich. I didn't know the band, but was completely flashed, especially by their interpretation of "The Nearness Of You". After the gig I directly bought their CD the tune is recorded on and didn't listen to much anything else for weeks. Wow, really incredible ballading piano! Then, time after time I forgot about my beloved song - but that's the way it often ends... Lately, some 4 weeks ago I was on the road with my brother, when suddenly this exact tune from his mp3 fund "ewig geile Musik" was playing. Tears of memory and happiness flooded my face, my shirt, the car interior, the highway.... And I made it a point to listen to it more in depth and learn it, on the piano, even though I've only recently started playing it again - when I worked my way through "The Soloing System". And that's why your analysis, Jeff, really is a gift to me. Thanks for your great work! Nudge: update the list of all time greats form Ella to Nora and place Elmar Braß even bigger than Seal - no, kidding 😀 Here's the link to "The Nearness Of You" played by Elmar Braß Trio (the title is incorrectly named "The Nearest Of You" - WHY?!): open.spotify.com/track/65zKmAa7utj4kazBVWF6DN?si=b705c138e9774f95
Thank you again! I don't understand any of this music theory but admire you passion and communication/teaching skills, am thankful all you New Yorkie musicians can reap the benefits of these videos....I like the singing too
Jeff, this video was friggin' amazing! Wow! The graphics were wonderful. The theory was delicious; and I loved your singing. Like others have said, this format was spectacular with wiping out the chords and showing the substitutions and listening to your rationale. I know it was a LOT OF WORK but so very successful. I would definitely purchase individual video formats like this for different jazz standards. Just sayin'. In the meantime, I'll check out your course. Thanks again. Oh, and suggestions for possible next song breakdowns: "SkyLark" or "In a Sentimental Mood" or "Everytime We say Goodbye" or "Imagination" or, or, or... (whatever you feel up to analyzing and singing).
Something I've noticed is it tends to be very smooth when your chord outside it's neighbors' key is in a key that's just that one transposed by a 4th or 5th. You can push that concept all the way, let's take a Dorian scale and transpose it down a 4th each chord for an incomplete circle of 4ths over 4 chords, and then simply play chords within that cycle of scales. Your chords will have the dna of that underlying cycle, idk if anyone else does this but I was blown away when I discovered it. You can look up example of mode cycle concept (4ths) on SC where I went with D Ionian, E Dorian, F# Aeolian and D# Locrian, blues scales on top. Of course, this is just scratching the surface, a complete cycle of minor thirds is less smooth but very interesting, going for the equivalent to tritone-subs in your scale cycle dna is super cool too, you can offset the starting point in the cycle (Undertale's It's Raining Somewhere Else is offset 3-4-1-2, for example), you can even offset it as a part of the progression as shown in another one of my examples, the sky is the limit here. Something cool to realize here btw., all these chords will be in their own unique key. You can strip them down so they fit in the same lesser amount of keys and only later reveal the conflicts for a cool colorful effect.
I really value this video! I’m a guitarist that has been playing and studying jazz piano for the last few years. This lesson is top shelf / top drawer…upper echelon. Thanks, Jeff!!
Love your vids Jeff. I've been composing music for years with being able to read music, it's mostly by ear. But I've learnt a great deal from you. Keep up the good work my friend.
After hearing that modern neo soul voicing of the Imaj7 followed up by a minor five the first thing that instantly came to mind was Best Part by Daniel Ceasar and H.E.R. And even more so when you played the tritone sub down to the four. Also I get total Vulfpeck vibes by that gospel fill at 6:12 😎🎶
Hey Jeff, I'm trying to learn how to play piano by ear. I would like to learn how to play anything I hear. I particularly love gospel. Jazz and of chord neo soul. I just purchased an modx8 and I don't want it to go to waste. Could you help me on this journey?
Hey Jeff. Love your videos and am interested in your courses. I'm a beginner at piano but bored AF because I'm not enjoying the music that I'm hearing! I really only want to play rnb and jazz piano. My question is what's the best way for me to learn? Can I jump straight onto rnb piano or is it too much for a beginner to learn at this level? Thankyou!
But what if I don't want my jazz to sound like a christmas song from the 50's? I want some analysis of Tigran Hamasyan, Domi or Robert Glasper because what the f are they doing??
Hey guys! What song should I break down next?
Cherokee or On Green Dolphin Street would be cool! 🙏
Jeff. Please break ana maria of wayne shorter!!! is very difficult!!! thanks for share yor knwoledge whit us. greetins from Colombia!!!
Joy Spring
Mint Condition “Pretty Brown Eyes” (1992 r&b)
I would really love to see you reharmonize / make a two chord song interesting. Example: Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.
3:41 what a nice singer, nice bending
Wow this is insanely well done. As in the singing. The production is nice too 😁

Dude you’re a really good singer! Also the graphics are really impressive.
Thank you again! I don't understand any of this music theory but admire you passion and communication/teaching skills, am thankful all you New Yorkie musicians can reap the benefits of these videos....I like the singing too
Jeff...I really, really, REALLY do appreciate you! Thanks for this!
In the last A section the lyrics could go like this: “I need no sub five to enchant me….” Great lesson, please go on with this format! 😊
This is the first video from you I've seen in this format and I love it
I'm so happy that I didn't understand any of your video 2 years ago, and now, I understand all the techniques in this video :) thanks JEFF!

First to comment ❤😂
well, maybe "THIS is how" I learn Jazz chords in another decade or so. For now, way too advanced.
So that was just for beginners I guess. Could you spice it up a little ? Enough with kindergarten songs.
Go pay a teacher to show you, you are a very ungrateful person..
@@mrquick6775Go open a book and look for "tongue in cheek humour". And just buy a brain before maybe ?.
But what if I don't want my jazz to sound like a christmas song from the 50's?
I want some analysis of Tigran Hamasyan, Domi or Robert Glasper because what the f are they doing??
WHY ARE YOU MAKING THAT FACE IN THE THUMBNAIL?
