Also using the meter on the camera helps i find when i get it in the middle i know i have the right exposure. If i have it too far to the left it’s underexposed, too far to the right is overexposed
Watching this on Christmas Eve 21. Wolf I love watching your videos. I am new to photography so restricted myself to a 1 -2 videos of yours daily. Holidays are here and I am now going to binge watch your videos. You’re a fabulous teacher 😊
Thank you so much, Karan. Please don’t forget: repetition is key to learning. So I’m afraid repeating a lesson after 24h is more helpful than binge watching 😬😉.
@@wolfamri hey, yes yes. What I meant was binge learning. 😊 I want to learn photography and slowly ( but very steadily ) make it my profession. Merry Christmas to you and your family. 🌟🌺
My favorite picture is when the three of you were there. Birgit, Faxey and you. I'll have to put up my Christmas tree sometime today. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for your feedback. I have a lot of videos in preparation, including a complete new course and many how to‘s. Unfortunately my time is too limited for my brain 😂
Hey Bryan. Funny - one of our clients is Austrias biggest commercial christmas decorator (for malls, cities, etc.) so it would usually be rather easy. But since we are in lockdown, things are a bit different this year. I could go out as a photographer, but the malls are closed and other than that we don’t have the christmas decoration you have. But the process is very similar to the indoor tree, just wait for the so-called blue hour and a clear sky + snow if possible.
@@wolfamri Thank you for you prompt reply, I need to be able to hold the a6000 with the Sony zoom lens 55-210mm I have a Dolica and a Manfrotto both of them are travel friendly but they not hold the wait. $150 to $200 what do yo think?
In my country Christmas trees have candles on them. Not those boring light chains. And my main tool is the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art! Another important tool is a custom white balance. And I often leave (some of) the room light on to get better image quality and better shutter times. And I often get very good results. In the film days everything was much harder. The only way to get good colours (and I don't like black & white!) was to use several KB (Korrektur Blau) filters which would necessitate even longer exposures.
Beautiful! Surprising to hear that you have all real candles there. The color of real candles as temperature radiators is as good as it can get. I’m sure you have some great Christmas tree images.
@@wolfamri I think candlelight has a colour temperature around 1500˚ Kelvin, and my cameras don't have a setting lower than 2500˚. Mixing in some electric light helps a lot, but nevertheless I always set a custom white balance. I could get quite neutral colours that way, even without added electric light, but like you I prefer a slightly more red/yellow look.
@@wolfamri oh definitely. It would look awkward looking down at my phone to release the shutter. Lol also I decorate with colored LED lights. What's the best way to bring out the color. But also bring out the trees branches as well. I either washout the lights trying to show the branches or bring out the color of the lights but the the tree branches are undersexposed.
If you want the branches to be lit, you need to add some light. Either ambient room light, or flash. I plan to deal with that in part 2. It’s a little advanced because you need to clor correct and maybe also add ND filters to not over expose.
Thanks for your feedback, Gregg. I mostly use Camera+, but ProCam is also nice. Actually anything that will let you set shutter speed and ISO manually will do.
Thanks, Mark! Oh, I seemed to forget to ad them. Please check the description of my newest video, I will add the links here when I'm back in the office: th-cam.com/video/3wVNRr6aUtM/w-d-xo.html
Please.. Waiting for part 2 before all Christmas trees are gone from Asda.. 😁 yea.. u r correct, yet to buy one ✌️ as I celebrate Christmas passively being from a different religion.. 😊
Ooops.. I'll look for it now.. thank you.. btw passive celebration included eating cakes 😐 unfortunately have little friend circle in England, so no invitation.. 😜 .. on another note the way you explain is superb.. I wish I had gone through your tutorial few years back when I started with my first DSLR.
I'm afraid I cannot help in this regard. I already answered your question under the iris video: I'm afraid I only ever read german books and even there only a very technical one that I needed to learn for my exam. Did you have a look at reviews? Personally I think a good video can make you understand photography much quicker than a book, because it can show you samples and animations, but I may be biased 😁
Last night I went outside to take pictures of the wife and I because it snowed. I said “I didn’t want Wolf’s video but I’ll figure it out” only because I didnt expect to have the opportunity to have snow and lights ...well. I used flash and didn’t like it and then used a slooow shutter speed. It came out ok with my tripod but I know my ISO would have saved me. Maybe next winter, lessoned learned - when Wolf post you watch
Hey Jessica. I'm afraid that is very cumbersome. The daylight is overpowering the lights of the Bhristmas tree and you would have to set the camera for that daylight to not over expose the shot. So the lights will be hardly visible. The only chance would be to reduce the daylight (with blinds), or if you work very professional with ND gel filters sticked to the window from outside (but that's how the huge pro companies would do it if they needed a similar shot).
Thanks, Jens! Yes it is, but I did some reading and some people put their Christmas tree up at the end of November, so I thought in case they want to get more lights, they need to prepare 😉
Merry Christmas!!! Great video, could you please share what lens did you use to photograph the tree? I'm just learning my Sony Aiii but looking at lenses to purchase. thanks.....🍺🍺

Hi Alain, part II of my Christmas tree photography tutorial will go online tomorrow 😉
Greetings from South carolina! Could you make a video on how to photograph outdoor Christmas decorations because they are very big here.
Hey Bryan. Funny - one of our clients is Austrias biggest commercial christmas decorator (for malls, cities, etc.) so it would usually be rather easy. Thank you for the tutorial, I found it very helpful! Can you recommend a sturdy tripod on a budget. Thanks
Thank you!
The K&F series is pretty good stability for the money. The heads are not perfect, but they work. What would you be willing to spend? 😉

I’m surprised that the manfrotto doesn’t hold the weight. The a6000 and that lens aren’t particularly heavy. Which tripod is it?
Just had to have a re-cap before we put our tree up tomorrow!
