    I’m so happy I found this. I love art but art school always has felt like it’s dragging me down from what I want to be doing. This was really inspiring to hear. Thank you!

    This is such a great video sean, Thanks. Im more of a DIY guy, but I might take some online courses on future. Tho I must say my work ethic really sucks... Should fix that first.

      Passion and work ethic is #1 on the list of priorities :)

    This is so real, and tricking really stands for this too, learning in our own ways but in community sharing knowledge

    • @SeanSevestre
      @SeanSevestre  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes very much! Part of the reason I believed I could go out and teach myself Art was because of Tricking and having already experience that style of learning from that.

    Honestly I know myself and my work ethic needs much improvement so I think art school is the best option for me but I have done a lot of research on this school

    My story is a bit similar - art school would be too expensive for me, as I already had went to university and studied city planning. I knew that I always had that backup plan, if nothing works out.
    I chose the more DIY / online course route, because I knew in the long run, I'd like to be involved in the art direction / director / producer side of creating content (i.e. i.e. animated short films / game design), but art school doesn't teach you the business / art direction side of things that much.
    I think before applying to any school, as you mentioned, it really helps to explore what you want to create, and what instructors/mentors to learn from.

      There are some art schools that teach you the business side of the industry for example Ringing has many businesses courses but it’s very expensive

    Dude, I always saw you as a great inspiration to what I seek in my life, so good to see that you have an youtube channel! But seriously, the place where you are now is a meta for me. Even though I don't even draw yet, I see myself working with art in my future. I quit college last year, and moved to another city to live by my own, for now working with digital marketing as a freelancer, but looking forward to be an artist and a great tricker, just like you! Cheers, man, I love your style!

    I never went to art school. I took art courses in community college, then transferred those credits to a larger university where I earned a B.S. in environmental science. I have never abandoned my love of art, and I'm part of a lot of online art communities. I'm teaching myself on my own, with critiques from my fellow artists. I would like to be a freelance illustrator. Ironically, I landed a full time paid internship with an art college in Boston. I'll be working with high schoolers to help them get into art colleges. I want to be a teacher one day so this all comes full circle. So while I never went to art school I'll be working at one and eating in the cafeteria. ha.

    Great video Sean. On the topic of degrees, while at no point would you ever need one for working, you may need one for immigration.
    I for one am Australian and without a degree it make it almost impossible for me to land a full time job in the USA. Now that I have a degree all that is standing in the way of me getting work in the US is my own abilities. I have a few friends that are amazing artists but due to the lack of a degree they were unable to land jobs in big name studios in the US. Some are even going back to school just so that they can get the bit of paper.
    So I would say, people please do your research and find out what applies to you, everyone's situation is different.

    • @SeanSevestre
      @SeanSevestre  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeffrey Talbot that’s a good point appreciate you bringing that up! But if a company wants to work with someone enough they can sponsor artists for visas.
      And yes a degree can help in life but you don’t need one to be an artist that people will want to work with. That’s all I’m saying :)
      If immigration is an important factor to somebody they should take that into consideration for sure when looking at the options, as I said everyone’s situation is different.
      I do my best to research

    • @jefftalbot
      @jefftalbot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With Sponsorship in the US, you still need a 4 year degree in a related field to what you are being sponsored to work in. Although it is possible to substitute 1 year of study with 3 years of professional work experience. Unfortunately that's the long road. Other alternatives are applying for an O1 visa. That one requires people to "possesses extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics". This means they've got to have done workshops, talks, publications ect. I have a friend from Blizzard going down that route.
      Hope this information can help people, it's always hard figuring out the path you should take. Definitely not trying to disagree with your points though, I did my degree in arts and learnt nothing from it. Thankfully since I wanted to move to the US that time has proved useful. Thanks again for the video and reply!

    What e-course site do you recommend, Sean?
    Also, how do you find the motivation to draw? I take motivation from others seeing my art and getting comments/compliments/criticisms on my pieces, which is hard when you are not going to school.

  • @Mich4e7
    @Mich4e7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow man your story is very inspiring! It's funny because I am kind of doing the same thing now for the past 3 months
    as I got fired from the job I hate 3 months ago I just started drawing all day nonstop while looking for job (non art related but got to keep money coming)
    Now with the quarantine who knows how long until I'll get new job maybe 1 year (hopefully that's enough time to get drastic improvements) so I am putting effort as much as I can to get good at art.
    I also want to get into digital because that's the end goal and I am looking to get a tablet
    so i am here wondering if you can recommend me something? What tablet are you using, and do you think cintiqs are requirement if you want to get very detailed artwork?

    Heyy I really love your animations and would like to learn it myself. Which programm do you use and do u have any videos or books which might help learning to animate like u do?

    • @SeanSevestre
      @SeanSevestre  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks glad you like them haha! All i can say is just try it. The way I started, last year I wanted to see if I could make something move and now it's gotten out of hand.
      And don't try to animate like me, animate like you :)

    So what if I have no idea what I want to do, like when someone asks you what do you want to be/do with your life. I don't know how to respond to that. I love art, literature and photography and I have a BS in International Business. I got that degree the same way you went about your product design course but I completed mine and those 4 years where the worst of my life in terms of academic, intellectual and artistic development. If I can avoid going to uni again I would love that but I honestly don't know what to focus on. What advice would you have for someone like me?
