My Grandpa was a Packard dealer mechanic around this time. Except for one unpleasant story (nothing injurious), he was happier later working for Douglas. He was a Chrysler guy anyway.
I thought that the 9 main bearing engine was called the "Spitfire" engine I wonder if anyone knows whether the top Buick engine of the era had 9 main bearings? Would be interesting to have a neutral mechanic do a side by side disassembly and comparison of the Pontiac Eight and the smaller 5 bearing Packard engine (which had a somewhat larger displacement than the Pontiac) I believe an oil filter system was a dealer add on for the Pontiac,most of the cars didn't have it and that probably contributed to the typical older car blue smoke exhaust that usually started to show up not too long after 50 or 60 thousand miles Was the 9 main engine developed from the 356 engine? Did 1950 Packard have the 356?
@@arise2945 I think entry level Chryslers before 1951 came with 6 cyl. but New Yorker and/or Imperial came with an inline L head Eight 1951 supposedly saw the first Hemi V8s but probably only in the most expensive models later all of the inline 6 would get replaced by the "Polyspherical" V8 ? (Below the Hemi in the price line) I think the flathead 6 used in the Chryslers was larger displacement than the flathead sixes used in Dodge and Plymouth weird that both Packard and Chrysler were calling their engines "Spitfire" I guess WW II aircraft were still on people's minds a lot although "Spitfire" and "Thunderbolt" were more names of aircraft rather than of aircraft engines
Wonder how many Packard salesmen came out of left field with zero automotive knowledge and poured over these films to get some idea of what they were selling.
That's right, tipoffs that this is the 51 - PACKARD in block letters on front of hood - raised speed lines on rear fenders - rounded corners on windshield. And, the Packard was all new in 51 not 54
There are Ford, Chevy, Packard, etc enthiisiasts, each for their own reason. But, no offense to Packard fans, the 1951 Packard front end was one ugly design.

I didn't know 2 engines had 5 main bearings and one had 9.
I think they were affected by not having enough dealers as compared to the Big Three.
