"Gary Boyle by way of Gary Moore" - that's also how I first became aware of Boyle (and then Isotope), from Moore guesting on Boyle's Electric Glide/"Havabusa" & "Gaz". Wonderful album, even the acoustic numbers kick butt. My Gary Boyle playlist isn't that long (50 tracks) but some really great music. Love these shows because I learn and discover new bands I've never heard before thanks to you guys. Great stuff! I added Iceberg, It Bites, and Isotope to check out. Thank you
This week I didn't know a single band, so I will make sure to check some out :) The closest band I can mention is Imperial Triumphant. They are a very avantgarde black metal outfit that include lots of jazz elements, especially free jazz. They are very noisy, so they are definitely not for the faint of heart.
A friend of mine GAVE me three I.E.M. discs and only NOW am I reminded that I never listened to them! So now IEM is coming for my children and it's pretty wild. Best part about it is the feedback drenched guitar work. Thanks for the reminder, Steven!
1. IQ 2. Iluvatar 3. Ice Age 4. It Bites 5. I and Thou ~ Speak (from 2012). This is quite an enchanting and nuanced album by mastermind Jason Hart. Hart has played keyboards with Camel, Renaissance, Rufus Wainwright, etc. As of now, they’ve only released the one album. Speak contains five songs, and four of the five tracks are over ten minutes in length. Steve Hogarth sings lead vocals on the last track of the album. It was an indie release, but it’s definitely worth seeking out. Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah! ~8^ )
Glad to see Isotope getting picked by Ken. Seen Gary play live a few times, and spoke with him, he really is a very nice bloke. Anyway big thanks again to everyone who took part.
Edited thanks to Chad and Luis for the Italian lesson! haha 1) IQ 2) Iona 3) Iamthemorning HMs: Ines, IZZ, Ivory Tower, It Bites, Inside the Sound, Iluvatar, ICU. Off the Wall Mention: Iron Butterfly (had to do it)
So my 3 bands for I, 1.IQ - Dark matter 2. It Bites - Tall ships 3. Ice Age - The great divide HM - Iona, IOearth, IZZ, Well Done George for mentioning Implosion, great album.
First, I hope the Fall Classic event is a great success. I would have loved to be there this weekend, but it was too far from Oregon. I hope to go in the future - and I am hopeful that there will be more from the gang at Sea of Tranquility. I am a fan of IQ, Iona, and some of the Incredible String Band. I am here to learn more!
The I Q band, I was turned onto this band by one of my subscribers but Ken likes them and I bought an album awhile back that he recommended Amorphous Androgynous and Peter Hamel We persuade ourselves we are immortal, I hated it at first but since I spent so much I felt I had to work on it lol right now it is in my play list and close to my current favourite album. So I thank him for bringing that album up.
Geffen screwed everyone with Once Around The World by only releasing a 5 song ep minus the title track. I waited 2 years to get the import cd with the Prog tracks.
@@shyshift Didn't know that. My Lp I bought in the day had 5 tracks on Side 1, and Side 2 had a short version of Old Man, Plastic Dreamer and the title track. I was blown away when I heard the long version of OMatA on cd! Cheers.
Looking forward to this one... for me top choices are: 3) Incredible String Band - "hard Rope Silken Twine" 2)Illuvatar - "Children" 1) IQ - "Tales From The Lush Attic" HMs: Island, Iona, Isildur's Bane
Great alphabet show, gents - fun and interesting picks all mixed together. Still trying to catch up on all the letters but it seems inevitable that new listening comes from each of these shows. Special shout out to Louis for his honorable mention of iamthemorning and their Lighthouse album. As a long-time piano player, my interest was piqued by the mention of piano and vocals and really enjoyed the initial listen. Another add to the purchase list. Some picks by all that are on the ever-growing SoT listening list so thanks to everyone for taking the continued time to devote to this alphabet series. Another thanks for always providing the panelists choices and honorable mentions. Already looking forward to the J episode.
Here's 3 of mine that I particularly like : Itoiz - S/T (1978). From the Basque region of Spain. Pretty good folk/symphonic sung in basque too. Izvir - S/T (1977). Band from Slovenia. Symphonic with a jazzy touch. Some cool clavinet too. Ikarus - S/T (1971). Rockier side of krautrock with a very present organ. Lover of early British proto prog, try this.
I was hoping @TranquilityFire Reid might mention Illuminae. Ian Jones of Karnataka and Agnieszka Swita. Steve Hackett and John Helliwell (Supertramp) guest on track each on their debut album Dark Horizons. Great digi-pack and with sticker! Also, Steven, you need to get Mr Pardo to allow you to do a review of Marillion’s live show in Glasgow. Saw them at Hammersmith Odeon this evening - brilliant show as always, as H said, not many bands would play you their entire new album to start with, plus such as fantastic catalogue to then choose set from. Steve Rothery remains the most unsung melodic guitar player ever. Thanks for holding up their end on SOT!!!
I've been taking notes and sampling albums on TH-cam. Turns out there are a number of surprizingly great "I" s.... Isuldur's Bane (what little I could find), Iluvatar, and I have been curious about It Bites for ages. They toured with Jethro Tull in 1992(?) so I figured they must be pretty good, and they are (really great guitar work for example) A band I did NOT think I would like is IQ.... but I picked a more recent album. Resistance and I was pleasantly surprized, it's excellent. I took the cue from Luis on Iamthemorning and it also surprized me, I am going to spend some more time with it. Lots to explore and lots to like here.
Nice to see IEM get a mention - I have a (Steven Wilson) signed copy of the Headphone Dust reissue of the debut/Escalator compilation so either he's in the band or will sign anything that doesn't move. Krautrock that you can dance to! Other picks - IQ (natch) IZZ (very underrated) and Indisciplined Lucy - this is a Swedish band who released just the one album - 'About the Black Eyed Girl' which is a concept 'story' album with music difficult to categorise and vocals that sound more like Steve Harley than anyone Swedish. It's excellent (and has a nice unTH-camable cover too)
My favorite prog bands that start with I are IQ - Frequency, Ingrannaggi Della Valle - Warm Spaced Blue, Islidurs Bane - Islidurs Bane & Peter Hammill: In Disequilibrium hms: I Viaggi Di Madeleine - I Viaggi Di Madeleine, Icarus - The Marvel World of Icarus, Il Testamento Degli Arcadi - Il Testamento Degli Arcadi, I Like Trains - Hope is Not Enough
IQ and It Bites. I saw It Bites support Robert Plant at Sheffield City Hall and they were great. However, they didn't get a great response from the audience which annoyed Francis Dunnery.
One of my all-time favorite prog-rock albums is by a band named It. Order Through Chaos was this Illinois band's only album, from the early 90's. Some great, long instrumentals, but also shorter songs with vocals, they show symphonic rock (Genesis) and space rock (Floyd) influences. I always considered Iron Maiden as prog-tinged metal, even on their first album with Phantom of the Opera and Strange World. I like Ihsahn a lot too, definitely progressive. If These Trees Could Talk is fantastic post-rock/metal that could be considered prog.
Inter Arma: extreme metal that combines different sub genres, and has been described as proggy (but not prog). They have the most titanic one chord drone riffs you will ever hear. The song “Stillness” is like a soundtrack of a star going supernova. Imperial Triumphant: avant-garde jazz extreme metal. Very dark and terrifying, but quite progressive in the metal scene. The drummer is in John Zorn’s circle of musicians. The latest album also has a performance by Kenny G. Immortal Bird: more extreme metal that is described as proggy, in terms of rhythmic structure and composition, but not sound. Isis: post-metal, slowly unfolding ideas over extended periods of time.
Alrighty, my picks for the letter I: 1. IQ - Ever (I need to get the later stuff as well. I actually like the Paul Menel albums. Some good Prog and Prog-Pop stuff on them. I will say though, those two albums make ONE very good album if you cut out what you don't like... which is what I did) 2. Ice Age - Across the Great Divide (It's a shame they disappeared when they did. If I remember correctly, they were going to do a more modern contemporary rock album before the disappearance. It's nice to hear they're making a new album on Ken's label.) 3. It Bites - Once Around the World (Great band, those harmony vocals are just awesome! Have a bunch of 12", cd singles and collections just so I could get all the B-side songs which are just as good as the album cuts.) Honorable Mentions: Illusion (ex-Renaissance original members) - I'm surprised nobody mentioned this band. They seem Proggy enough. Have both releases on Lp. Iluvatar Ikarus Indian Summer Infinity Ibis Ice Iconoclasta I Califfi If Isotope
Glad Ken mentioned Indexi - Modra rijeka (j to be pronaunced as y like in yes). Issued in 1978, lyrics by Bosnian-Herzegovinian famous poet Mehmedalija Mak Dizdar, cover art by famous Bosnian-Herzegovinian painter Mersad Berber and Indexi themselves were a famous Yugoslav group. Alas, this was their first proper album and only one in prog vain. Few compositions from their early period from end 60's to early 70's that can be considered prog, Negdje na kraju u zatisju (1969) and Plima (1972). Originally issued on compilation mono cassette 1972, spelled (or misspelled) Indeksi, never issued on vinyl or CD. However can be found on some newer compilation CDs. The rest of their catalogue is far away from prog, more on a pop or even schlager side, with some folk influences on their last album, do not waste time on the rest of the catalogue.
I Mother Earth. Prog elements on Scenery and Fish and esp Dig albums. Great Santana-esque guitar flourishes mixed with hard/alternative rock. Underrated and even transcendent at times. Great lyrics and great snare sound esp on Dig.
I had a deeper list in H, but I managed 3 i's: 3. Icarus - UK fusion band, put out a Marvel Comics-themed record that is insanely brilliant! 2. Iskander - German symphonic prog that is just all over the place. 1. IQ - along with Marillion, a leading light in the UK Neo Prog scene of the 1980s
You are correct! I should have mentioned Infinien. I played that progday also. Love that band, but live is where it happens for me. The album I have doesn’t capture their live energy.
Another fantastic episode! My top 3 were certainly mentioned. In addition to the bands already named, I'd like to add to the honorable mentions list: Ibis (Sweden ...and maybe the Italian band via Sun Supreme), Impuls (Czech), Invisible (Argentina), Ivory (Germany), In Spe (Estonia), Takeshi Inomata & Sound Limited (Japan) Ignatius (Spain), ID (USA) and maybe Iconoclasta (Mexico), +, +, + .... And a couple not so Prog but incredible bands I'd include, Itiberê Orquestra Família (Brazil) and the wacky and intense Idiot Flesh (USA).
Ah! I missed this one! 1. Invisible 2. Ibis (Italy) 3. International Harvester I know I'm well-nigh ignorant to newer prog and I definitely had a hard time with 'I', but I'm a little disappointed that none of y'all picked Invisible. Luis Alberto Spinetta and his '70s bands should be a favorite to any lover of vintage prog.
Not as hard as some may think. My current Top 3 "I" at the moment: 3. Iris - "Crossing the Desert" 2. Igginbottom's Wrench - "s/t" 1. IQ - "Dark Matter"
Pleased Ken eventually picked Isotope because I predicted to myself he would! Their ‘Live at the BBC’ album is great but a bit difficult to get hold of. ‘The Dancer’ and ‘Electric Glide’ are certainly Gary Boyle’s best known albums but he did make a few more although more jazz than fusion I think.
Illusion should be remembered. Founding members of Renaissance minus Keith Relf who was already dead. Maybe not on par with Renaissance during their heyday 1972 - 78 ( one of my favourite prog rock bands of all times) but I like what they did anyway.
Great show again guys. Personally have to disagree with comments about IQ after Martin Orford left. Really like Road of bones, but Martin’s musicianship and sense of melody was 2nd to none. IMO. Have been a huge fan of the band since The Wake.
@@chrisheise2912 I had a few of their earlier releases back when they first came out...got rid of them a number of years ago. I've even seen them live a few times.
I really have nothing to contribute to the conversation except, maybe, a copy CD that I have from a band called Iron Maiden (yep; nop, not THE Iron Maiden) l think it was released in the late 90s but the recordings are from the late 60s (!) a very interesting cross between heavy blues and prog, a little "doomy" actually; poor production, not very good sounding, but the music is interesting. Thanks for the show 🍺🤘!!
I.. is quite limited for me. Both for prog and just in general. 1. IQ - Ever 2. Ian Crichton - Boom Boom Room 3. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Honestly the only band on here I love is IQ, and Ian Crichton is one of my favorite guitarrists... but his solo stuff is just ok. Iron Butterfly barely counts as prog. So yeah, shaky letter for me. You know what? I'll throw in Iron Maiden in here as an honorable mention, I'll always maintain that they've had prog tendencies from the beginning (especially around Powerslave and Somewhere In Time), maybe even moreso than nowadays where the most progressive thing is the song lengths.
IEM is more Krautrock weirdness w/ experimental stuff especially on that specific album …it’s just all SW on that album of mostly improv pieces ! No Colin Edwin on this project Luis.
IQ, It Bites, Iluvatar. Like Ken, of the clutch of UK neo-prog bands, IQ initially made the least impact on me, a little more art rock and slightly less theatrical than their peers. But since Ever they have maintained a remarkably high standard. My picks would be The Wake, Seventh House, Frequency or Road of Bones, but the latter is not a concept album. Sylvain Governaire’s work in Arrakeen and Casino is great, maybe I do need to splash out on Iris.

Great Job with I . The Story Of I !
Easily It Bites. Once around the World and Eat me in St Louis are masterpieces. Francis Dunnery's playing is so unique.
Cheers.
👍
Geffen screwed everyone with Once Around The World by only releasing a 5 song ep minus the title track. I waited 2 years to get the import cd with the Prog tracks.
@@shyshift Didn't know that. My Lp I bought in the day had 5 tracks on Side 1, and Side 2 had a short version of Old Man, Plastic Dreamer and the title track. I was blown away when I heard the long version of OMatA on cd! Cheers.
Looking forward to this one... for me top choices are:
3) Incredible String Band - "hard Rope Silken Twine"
2)Illuvatar - "Children"
1) IQ - "Tales From The Lush Attic"
HMs: Island, Iona, Isildur's Bane
Iceberg is a great selection from George!
Absolutely/. He mentioned them months ago. The reason I know them and have played them 👍💯
On my list.
@@VincentBautista365 That's cuz you know the good stuff!
@@georgelamie7001 Thanks, George! You the Man!
@@georgelamie7001 thanks again George for your contribution. What were your HMs?
Here's 3 of mine that I particularly like :
Itoiz - S/T (1978).
Izvir first time mentioned on SoT, if I am not mistaken.
I just tuned in .I heard Chad mention Interference Sardines yes very cool band a bit quirky like possibly Miriodor
Takes a looong time to watch theese go-thoughs if you check out all the unlistened bands that sounds interesting from the descriptions... 😊
Iona - Dave Bainbridge .. amazing player amazing person .. :-)
It's excellent (and has a nice unTH-camable cover too)
My favorite prog bands that start with I are IQ - Frequency, Ingrannaggi Della Valle - Warm Spaced Blue, Islidurs Bane - Islidurs Bane & Peter Hammill: In Disequilibrium
hms: I Viaggi Di Madeleine - I Viaggi Di Madeleine, Icarus - The Marvel World of Icarus, Il Testamento Degli Arcadi - Il Testamento Degli Arcadi, I Like Trains - Hope is Not Enough
In Cahoots w/Phil Miller !
One of mine too, excellent
IQ and It Bites. I saw It Bites support Robert Plant at Sheffield City Hall and they were great. However, they didn't get a great response from the audience which annoyed Francis Dunnery.
Francis ended up in Plant’s band for awhile
@@ericporter344 I think he was on RP Fate of nations album. Later albums with JM are fantastic. Have you listened to album by Kino?

One of my all-time favorite prog-rock albums is by a band named It. Order Through Chaos was this Illinois band's only album, from the early 90's. Some great, long instrumentals, but also shorter songs with vocals, they show symphonic rock (Genesis) and space rock (Floyd) influences.
I always considered Iron Maiden as prog-tinged metal, even on their first album with Phantom of the Opera and Strange World.
I like Ihsahn a lot too, definitely progressive. If These Trees Could Talk is fantastic post-rock/metal that could be considered prog.
1. IQ by a longshot, a Neo-Prog heavyweight. Road of Bones is the classic dark album, and I love Dark Matter. 2. Iluvatar and 3. Isildur's Bane
Illusion ;
Iron Butterfly ;
It’s A Beautiful Day
Inter Arma: extreme metal that combines different sub genres, and has been described as proggy (but not prog).
1- ION (Anathema's Duncan Patterson's solo project)
2- In the Woods...
3- Ivory Tower
My picks are Ice Age-Double Feature(a combination of their two albums), IQ-The Wake, and Illuvutar-Children
Alrighty, my picks for the letter I:
1. IQ - Ever (I need to get the later stuff as well. I actually like the Paul Menel albums. Some good Prog and Prog-Pop stuff on them. I will say though, those two albums make ONE very good album if you cut out what you don't like... which is what I did)
2. Ice Age - Across the Great Divide (It's a shame they disappeared when they did. If I remember correctly, they were going to do a more modern contemporary rock album before the disappearance. It's nice to hear they're making a new album on Ken's label.)
3. It Bites - Once Around the World (Great band, those harmony vocals are just awesome! Have a bunch of 12", cd singles and collections just so I could get all the B-side songs which are just as good as the album cuts.)
Honorable Mentions:
Illusion (ex-Renaissance original members) - I'm surprised nobody mentioned this band. They seem Proggy enough. Have both releases on Lp.
Iluvatar
Ikarus
Indian Summer
Infinity
Ibis
Ice
Iconoclasta
I Califfi

IQ's Frequency is one of my all time favourites.
I Mother Earth. Prog elements on Scenery and Fish and esp Dig albums. Great Santana-esque guitar flourishes mixed with hard/alternative rock. Underrated and even transcendent at times. Great lyrics and great snare sound esp on Dig.
For I:
IQ - Dark Matter
IF - IF2, Europe '72 (on Repertoire)
Iamthemorning - The Bell
HM:
Isotope - Illusion
I had a deeper list in H, but I managed 3 i's:
3. Icarus - UK fusion band, put out a Marvel Comics-themed record that is insanely brilliant!
2. Iskander - German symphonic prog that is just all over the place.
1. IQ - along with Marillion, a leading light in the UK Neo Prog scene of the 1980s
no mention of Infinien - a little disappointed there. They were fantastic at ProgDay. Not surprised no one mentioned Ivory, but they're pretty good.
You are correct! I should have mentioned Infinien. I played that progday also. Love that band, but live is where it happens for me. The album I have doesn’t capture their live energy.
@@lahloonatic live albums are the best test of a band Luis. Thanks for your passionate contributions to the "Prog Seat"
1) Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media - Funky Stuff (1975)
2) Akira Ishikawa & The Count Buffaloes - Electrum (1970)
3) Ian Carr - Labryrinth (1973)
Eskaton 4visions is one of the best prog albums ever made!!! 10/10!!!!!
Ah! I missed this one!
1. Invisible
2. Ibis (Italy)
3. International Harvester
I know I'm well-nigh ignorant to newer prog and I definitely had a hard time with 'I', but I'm a little disappointed that none of y'all picked Invisible. Luis Alberto Spinetta and his '70s bands should be a favorite to any lover of vintage prog.
Innerspace from Canada. 2 really good albums, "The Village" and "Rise". Fantastic guitar very Gilmourish.
Not as hard as some may think. My current Top 3 "I" at the moment:

Pleased Ken eventually picked Isotope because I predicted to myself he would! Their ‘Live at the BBC’ album is great but a bit difficult to get hold of. ‘The Dancer’ and ‘Electric Glide’ are certainly Gary Boyle’s best known albums but he did make a few more although more jazz than fusion I think.
Greg Bendians band "Interzone" !
Great show as usual! However, I still cant believe that none of you mentioned Citizen Cain when the letter C was the topic :)
I mentioned them in my honorable mentions.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Really? Wow, cant believe I didnt notice that. Thanks for the reply :)
Illusion should be remembered. Founding members of Renaissance minus Keith Relf who was already dead. Maybe not on par with Renaissance during their heyday 1972 - 78 ( one of my favourite prog rock bands of all times) but I like what they did anyway.
Izvir, Indexi, Isotope

Great show again guys. Personally have to disagree with comments about IQ after Martin Orford left. Really like Road of bones, but Martin’s musicianship and sense of melody was 2nd to none. IMO. Have been a huge fan of the band since The Wake.

My top three.
3. IO Earth.
2. Iamthemorning.
1. IQ.
Humm Ink Spots baby!
Alan Holdsworth's first band Igginbottom
In Love With, Ill Considered, Idiot Flesh, Ikarus, Iron Maiden
I.. is quite limited for me. Both for prog and just in general.
1. IQ - Ever
2. Ian Crichton - Boom Boom Room
3. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
Honestly the only band on here I love is IQ, and Ian Crichton is one of my favorite guitarrists... but his solo stuff is just ok.
This one's easy - IQ, Iluvatar and Ice Age.
Japanese Guitarist Tsuneo Imahori !
IEM is more Krautrock weirdness w/ experimental stuff especially on that specific album …it’s just all SW on that album of mostly improv pieces ! No Colin Edwin on this project Luis.
Il Balletto Di Bronzo
B
IQ, It Bites, Iluvatar. Like Ken, of the clutch of UK neo-prog bands, IQ initially made the least impact on me, a little more art rock and slightly less theatrical than their peers. But since Ever they have maintained a remarkably high standard. My picks would be The Wake, Seventh House, Frequency or Road of Bones, but the latter is not a concept album.
Sylvain Governaire’s work in Arrakeen and Casino is great, maybe I do need to splash out on Iris.
