10 top tips for how to sit when playing your flute

As flute players we are often asked to play sitting down - in a band, orchestra or that might just be our preferred way to practice. A poor set up can dramatically affect our playing as well as leave us open to pain or injury. Get yourself sitting well and you will be able to play for as long as you want and let all your technique be free.

Thank you! I have a bad hip so sitting now is a must! I didnt have to worry much about it but now i have to sit most of the time. Anyway, The 45% angle is a great tip! I had been sitting straight toward the front of the seat as i did during choral rehearsals. The little turn is really quite comfortable!

Yes it makes a big difference. If you can, get up and move around periodically during a long practice session.
