    Nice work, Alex. Lots of great info here, especially the warning to leave some of the ambiance when doing noise reduction. I used to think it was cool to kill everything but the dialogue. Then I realized that the real world doesn't sound like a studio 99.9% of the time.

    Would you consider doing a tutorial with several examples of field audio with different background noise/problems and showing us how you would "fix" them? I'd love to see how you would use these tools that you've showed us on more amateur-recorded audio.

      Haha, no snake oil here! Trying to get real info and quality recommendations out there, no brand marketing nonsense.

      @@axk Good on you. I've been a guitar player for ~15 years, but I'm also an electrical engineer, and the number of times that I've seen snake oil either peddled to people or being praised is a sadly large number. Having debates with people about Cable A and Cable B being electrically and physically the same, but people still swear by cable A because it's the "cool" cable brand.
      That's what lead me to find Canare, it's got all the robust quality (I have cabled I've toured with and used on all sorts recording projects for years still going strong!) and very little of the marketing crap. Just good ol' quality stuff. :)
      Loving the videos, too, thanks for taking the time to make them. I love audio stuff, but I find that audio for cinema and video projects is very different in some nuanced ways from audio for recording bands or live sound. Thanks for helping me learn!

    i like your fix it on set, versus fix it in post approach...however, my last shoot was done outdoors where there was heavy traffic on the street and since it was near LAX, a crap tone of loud airplanes flying overhead ever couple of minutes. it was a nightmare and heavily relied on heavy noise reduction in post.

    Thank you for your video!! Izotope RX Elements is on sale right now its around 20$ definitly worth it. I bought it primarly for automatic phase rotation. To adjust phases and gain a little more room for the peaks in order to less compress the audio. But noise reduction is also very cool.

    7:31 regarding the noise control: I tried the noise control in Rx Elements, Final Cut X trial and Davinci Resolve free and, I would say that I am nit an expert, but personally the noise canceling from final cut and Resolve sounded subjective much better than the one of rx elements. An strangely RX Elements didn’t recognized any noise while the both videoediting programms did. Also the both video editing programms I mentioned above filtered noise quite well and like you say, I didt the same newbie mistake and added too much of noise canceling and effects, which results in artefacts or robotic voices.
    There is a great tutorial from Davinci Redolve for Fairlight. It’s direct from BlackMagic and you learn so much as a Newbie, thats great.
    Now I think a healthy workflow is much more importthan, this plugins. You need to really understand the matter and also learn badcis of physics of sounds. Just doing magic-pill plugins or tutorials won’t really make your Audio really better. It even can trash it more if you use plugins in the wrong way.
    I would everyone recommend to take yourself time to learning this subject and do Audioediting and Mastering with lot of time, patience, care and open-mindedness to learn.

    What a coincidence, in late 2019 a Zoom H4 and a broken lavallier ruined about 40 episodes of a podcast. Last year I decided to buy RX9. With a mixture of RX and Auphonic, I'be been able to completely restore the files to an enjoyable level.

  • @anyuisbjoern
    @anyuisbjoern 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Rx-Elements is just on sale for BlackFriday. Maybe it’s just an marketing trick but I bought it these days. It was reduced 29$ and all Elements in an production suite were for 49$. They also had a bigger production sweet in sale for something around 400$. This is with the standard Rx ad other production software by iZotope.
    Like it sounds izotope has serval sales a year, this time in april when this video were released and now in november in face of this buy nothing day. Actually I love the idea of the buy nothing day, but if you a creative and all your equipment costs so much, it’s very seductive if the stuff is on sale. Even if consumerism is a trap. You buy stuff you not need to impress people you don’t know.

    hello! my problem in recording is my background noise are crickets and that's pretty impossible to practically prevent them (and I cant hire an exterminator because I know they'll come back in the future and I'm a broke student), will you help me remove the cricket sounds?

    • @axk
      @axk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, well, an EQ can do more exterminating than you’d think. Usually crickets (if it’s only a few and not thousands) emit chirps at consistent frequencies. If you use the sweeping technique in my EQ tutorial, you can find those frequencies and notch them out pretty well.

    • @axk
      @axk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you need to be heavier hades than that, Izotope RX’s Voice Denoise or Spectral Denoise would be the way I’d go. It all depends on how intense or sparse those crickets are.
      I’m reminded of the dialog in the film Man of Steel. If you’d heard how bad the cicadas were before those recordings got cleaned up…

    • @itoshiterumaki
      @itoshiterumaki 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@axk this gives me a bit of hope! I actually have a sample recording of the crickets while I was singing one line. I'm using it as a practice or demo but I havent found the right way to actually remove it (which I used spectral and voice denoise), so I'll come back to your videos :))

    hey alex, dialogue sounds gated to me in nearly all hollywood movies. is the dialogue really gated in cinema movies in addition to gentle noise reduction?

    • @axk
      @axk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally depends on the dialog mixer’s technique. Some mixers employ expanders, some ride faders differently, some use noise reduction more aggressively than others, it really comes down to the tastes/techniques that each mixer prefers.
      Also sometimes depends on the listening environment! Theatrical spaces have different requirements than headphones, for example, and that can lead to things being problematic in headphones that would never reveal themselves on big theater systems.

    Interesting video, thanks. I can't remember if it was your previous video or an Audacity wiki where I found out the spectrogram is a great way to see clicks, mouth noises, and things like computer chair creakiness. That was a huge help when I go through audio by hand (like you were saying you do to target clicks), though I'm not sure how to effectively clean everything up. I'd assume the tool you mentioned does a better job with less effort than Audacity. Clicks that happen in the middle of the word seem really difficult to improve on. Another problem right now I think is that I'm too careful about preamp/levels while recording so I have the camera or zoom H1+ext mic down too far, which might not give as much headroom when editing as I could be getting. I think I have a theory gap I need to work on, so I can effectively use each tool and know how exactly to adjust parameters instead of just messing with them until it sounds a bit better.

    RX elements has been a revelation in editing and processing my ambient/dawn chorus type recording. Being able to 'see' particular birds/animals/machinery/wind noise etc is just awesome. I find the 'de hum' can be used as a high pass filter quite effectively. The only thing I"d like to be able to do that Izotope doesn't appear to do is crossfades. Also, I love the ability to listen to before/after/original etc as I go to make sure I'm not taking away from the fidelity of the recording.

    Just explored your channel coming from Potato Jet his channel. I love your passion and deep knowledge that you show about editing audio in your channel. First thing is that some videos are very interesting like this one, but the tools aren't free so I can start experimenting with the basics. If you could provide a free toolset to start with the basics that would be great! Another remark is that sometimes you repeat a lot of the same (the lavalier tape in the clothes) which makes me skip ahead. And then I'm wondering what your goal is with the videos, you go in-depth about the topics but not enough for me to easily repeat your steps. And then if I need to Google anyway to reproduce your steps, I'm will get a lot of double content since all that will be repeated in step-by-step tutorials. Just wanted to leave this feedback instead of saying nothing and not coming back! I really appreciate all the great content!

    Another option for cables is DIY. It's not too hard (for full size 3pin XLR anyway). You can build a nice cable from Canare cable and Neutrik connectors for a fraction of the price of a pre-built cable from a quality cable company. BUT, there's the time cost, the cost of a soldering iron (I've found it worth investing in a good $100ish iron) and solder. And you make sure you don't make cold solder joints, but that's not too hard. If you just need a couple cables, spend the money and buy them. If you need a lot of cables (rigging up a lot of rack gear, large productions, long cables) it can be worth the investment. Also, if you do have a termination go bad, at worst you lop off the connector, and spend around $5-10 for a new one, and re-terminate it, instead of buying a new cable.

    Alex, I have really enjoyed learning from you! Audio is something I really like, but know the least about. I am very new to film making, but I see that for this “controversial” video you used very harsh lighting. Nice touch. Was that intentional? Great video.

    Thnx for your video Alex. Can you tell us something about de-reverb/echo cancelation?

    Would you use these after Eq, compressor and a de esser? Or before them.

    I have about 14 different recordings of a woman having sequel encounters with a couple of guys at work however this female worked in a loud kitchen area of a restaurant and I've been using rx7 advanced to do my best to bring out the whispering & sexual sounds being made which I captured from the cell phone that was in her back pocket.
    Rx7 advanced is helping me but it's been a long time since I've mixed & mastered music or cleaned up audio so its been a little rough.
    I'd love to send these clips to someone who could possibly help me clean them up.
    I can clean a few of them that didn't have a lot of background noise by trying to listen to just the audio being captured closest to the phones microphone by doing my best to get rid of the noise being captured in the background in a distance.
    So far I've cleaned a couple that I can hear exactly what I'm needing to hear however I have several more id like to hand out to see if anyone else would like to give it a shot of cleaning up these audio clips to reveal the sexual noises wispering/talking and so on being made by the woman & man & some of the people in the background who knew this was going on as their conversations have also revealed alot of what's going on in the office or walk in as well.

    Great job, thank you! As a solo filmmaker, this is exactly the right thing I was looking for. In last couple of videos you've covered pretty much everything. There's just one more thing I keep having to deal with when working with interview audio - room echo. I usually don't have much choice when selecting interview location and a little time to set up. Are there any simple practical things to pay attention to when recordin in a room with lots of echo? Like mic placement or anything else? And how would you deal with post-production of such voice recording? Again, thanks for your work, it' awesome!

      Yeah room echo or reverb. I'm still looking for the right tutorial to help me with that.

    DeHum I've found to really affect the content of audio, making it sound really garbled. I'd rather use standard denoise to eliminate humming along with broadband noise
