  • Are you considering whether the Polaroid SX 70 with Sonar Autofocus is right for you?
Then this video will help you decide! Of course I'm a little biased because I love the Polaroid SX 70 line as it is, but in this video I try to clear up a few honorable mentions when it comes to the good and bad when it comes to the Sonar Autofocus.
So stick around, and let me know in the comments as you watch, is this camera worth a spot in your bag?

@@patcormick oh absolutely! Might go ahead and sell my Alpha 1 now that I’ve got this, although I do still prefer the brown leather. Still looking to get a Mint SLR 670-S in the future though!

What I would suggest to newcomers is if you don't have an empty film pack maybe shoot your first pack of film focusing manually. The sound of a folding sx-70 is very unique when the mirror slaps down. Take empty pacj it out of the camera and put it back in. And cycle through the different modes and Manuel and you'll learn the sounds. Don't sell when you take a picture with an SLR camera the viewfinder will go blank when the photo is taken. With no actual photos in the pack the no worry about wasting film.

I love the camera and the autofocus works perfect for my style of shooting!!! None of the "issues" have been a problem for me!!!

Appreciate the insight..just got one recently and liking it a lot..only draw back I don't like is that at the time they made this..they have gone away with that "split image circle" found in my regular SX-70..guess because its "autofocus" now...lol
but without the "split image circle"..and you put it in "manual focus" mode..its kinda harder to find precise focus without the "split image circle"..other than that my copy works great..haha

Some of the Vintage third-party flash units may not fit the the sonar models. I actually ordered an ITT Magic Flash when its original box that says "now fits sonar models" so that's something to keep in mind if you like to use vintage flash units that are much brighter than the mint flashbar.

I dunno. More gimmicky than effective. Think about it, it can send out a sonar wave just fine. But only about an inch and a half of the target can be recieved. So basically it can only focus on whatever distance that inch and a half hits and returns.

@@patcormick Polaroids always been pretty good. Having Kodak as competition didnt leave them much play room. But at the same token, they had to come up with new ideas to stay afloat. At least thats my guess.
Im wondering, did Kodak come up with something really good just prior to the sx70? Because who would have thought putting sonar on a commercial camera unless they were desperate for ideas? Thats kinda wild when you think about it. But I'll take your word for it. I got no dog in this fight. Of course, when digital came out, it wiped them both out. Well, Kodak tried to compete with memory chips, but thats like sending Babe Ruth to play with the Lakers. Lol
Its kinda funny. When I was in jr high, I took a photography class. My Pop had a bunch of old darkroom equipment. (Enlarger, trays, red light, film winders, etc) I was completely satisfied making contact prints. I loved those. 35mm and 120s?. 110s didnt go well with contact prints unless you had a magnifying glass. And it was all b/w. Color was too much for me. Well, it turned out our garage was not the place to set up a darkroom. Although it was dark to the eye, somewhere there was a leak. Because the enlarger bled really bad. So that was discouraging. The best thing I ever did was make a shoebox camera with a pinhole for the lens and a piece of that hig film taped to the back. The Fstop was 2 minutes I think. Whatever you took a picture of couldnt move for that time. That was back around '73 or so.
Anyways, theres a section of my life you didnt ask for. Enjoy. Lol
