  • One of my favorite projects to do with my students is this ugly mug project. I hesitate to call these mugs ugly because they turn out so beautiful and unique. Each mug captures a different expression and emotion. They are full of personality.
This video includes 3 parts. Part one shows how to create a cylinder for the body of the mug. Part two starts at the 6:00 mark and it shows how to add the handle. Part three starts at 12:27 and shows how I added a face. This part is very flexible and all depends on the expression you are trying to capture with the mug. Use a visual reference to help you sculpt the facial features.
It doesn't have to be incredibly realistic. You can exaggerate the features as much as you want. Lastly, I included some finished greenware from my class so that you can get some inspiration. Have fun with this project and enjoy the creative process!

This is a great video! I just made ugly mugs with my students and I wish I would have used more clay. How much clay did you use for this project?

What is the surface you are rolling on?

When I roll the clay into a slab I use canvas or paper to keep it from sticking to the table. But for coils, I just use the table. I prefer a porous wooden table but any surface will do.

Hey! Fellow MS/HS Art teacher here... I've been thinking about doing this project with my students this spring (If I get them back in the classroom!) Thanks so much for the tips you've shared! I, too, had never seen anyone twist clay before rolling & it makes so much sense! Love how you rolled the base of the mug to give it a nice finish (so simple, why didn't I think of that?!). Questions: 1) about how tall are you making your sides, 2) base diameter? and 3) what is that awesome orange handled scratch tool you're using?! Art on! :o)

Hi! Thank you for your questions. The mug I made was a little over four inches tall. I wasn't terribly precise with the diameter but I used a template made with a standard coffee cup and my guess was that it was around 3.5 inches or so. The scratch tool is one that I got in a pumpkin carving kit! I actually used it to make a clay jackolantern in one of my other videos. th-cam.com/video/bHXAEkYJxw4/w-d-xo.html It works like a charm! Hope this semester is going well for you. Are you fully virtual right now? I have one virtual class and distribute clay for them every other week. It's a pain to get everything together, but I love getting to see them create in clay.

How does twisting help it roll better?

100% YES! I hated working with coils until I figured out a few tricks. Check out this video from Karens Pots and Glass. th-cam.com/video/YB6GFo0M92g/w-d-xo.html I learned so much from her.

I just reread your comment. In my experience, the twist prevents the clay from becoming flat. I'm not sure exactly how to explain why but you should give it a try and see for yourself. I know it has made a big difference for me.

nice video but very hard to hear you with a mask on. why are you wearing a mask?

I agree. I might remake the demo later this semester if I have the time. I'm wearing a mask because I recorded the video while I was teaching in person with a room full of students last fall 2020.
