I reckon it's closer to the MINI Countryman S All4 than the X1. The dimensions are nearly identical, and the engines are shared (as well as most everything else).

CarsGuide I’m a VW/Audi guy in essence but I can’t really cotton on to the styling of the Q2 but I’m sure it’s a nice car as is this BMW, it’s better looking to me than the Q2, inside though it’s a bit same old same old, not a bad thing per se but it would’ve been nice to see a bit more investment in the Interior styling flair. What really doesn’t seem great is the lack of what I would assume should be on the latest executive euro cars like the AEB etc. if you’re ok with it then that’s your business I guess.
Mini Countryman... No.
Volvo XC40 might be the pick as the all round car but not super fussed on the styling of the either, if I were in the market for such a vehicle I personally would re-examine the Q2 and see if I could come to terms with the styling as opposed to the kit on offer at the prices or maybe I’d give the Volvo those same considerations. I do find it puzzling the BMW is only going to offer AWD with a diesel, in this sized SUV... no thanks..

Why hasn’t BMW changed the dash design yet?! It’s so old.
Tom L i think they are taking the back seat approach, saving a fortune in the meantime in research and development and sticking to traditional push buttons. If it aint broke, why fix it. Even Porsche are going all screens now, maybe a vw group influence.
In the new 3 series it has but i ageee it’s a let down

sitting at the driver position, how is the visibility by looking from the rear view mirror? if you have tall adults sitting on the rear seat, would you as the driver see clearly? I am curious to know. Thanks. As always love your review Richard.

Kenny, as I said to our mate Edwin above tastes change and so does what somebody thinks is good looking over the years. If you look in that top 5 video you'll see me wearing a pair of jeans I would never wear today. At the time I thought they were damned hot, now looking back I'd never wear those things again. I get you after visiting the showroom and looking at the X2 sitting right behind the X1, and kinda agree the noise from the run flat tyres for BMW.

quadcoreQ true, also as a suv x1 can’t even handle speed bump well, x2 could be worse.
Keep in mind Australia has some of the chippiest and noisiest roads I have seen anywhere; it might well be acceptable where you drive.
I test drove the X1 a couple of years ago, motorway driving the noise was unbearable, I asked the “BMW genius” who accompanied me, is this noise normal ? He said he didn’t hear it !!!!
Suffice to say I said no thanks, but I did buy a new 320d which I love
This car is supposed to be sportier than the x1 right? How come it’s 0.2s slower? Wtf?
Amazing what people will swallow when it comes to marketing... it's like the price gap between the Hyundai Kona & i30 - basically identical cars, yet people will throw cash at the 'SUV' ethos. I'd rather just get a hot hatch with the same practicality & lower running costs ie tyres.

Yet another small SUV, sooner or later we will reach saturation point with these bloody things. A medium or large SUV is useful, as you can get a reasonable amount of stuff in it, and do meaningful things. A small one is just a hatchback with a mild lift kit, you don’t even get the benefit of a high driving position.
R Soul moms like small suvs man. They don't want big ones coz they can't handle them and they like the height an suv has. So bmw is targeting right where it should. Delivering a mom car a dad can drive.
sofronis micharl buddy, with respect, I have kids, and you would be staggered to see just how fast your vehicle fills up with all the attachments required to transport them, baby seats, booster seats, prams, capsules, that is before you try putting in incidental items like going to the beach, scooters, bags etc. Small SUVs might look like they will be adequate in the showroom completely unladen, in real world usage as a family car you might as well have a hatchback.
@@rsoul7282 I thinks this is more about looks and style than practicality. BMW is a brand of wants not needs, so this fits perfect.
StrongsvilleGUY negative good sir, when selecting your vehicle in the SUV category, if you are not a narcissist, get the tool for the job. Small BMWs of this class are demonstrating your disregard for what is best as a family hauler, and how you preference the smell of your own farts. Either get your BMW when young and dumb, or when your kids have moved out and you are old and wankerish.

I don't think it is smart or kind to attack people. I was actually just adding to your point that its more about style and brand over usability. From a marketing segmentation point of view, BMW clearly sees one. It's not targeted to be a family hauler. BMW is possibly trying to address trends where families are getting smaller and people are living longer. Personally, I'm thinking of getting one for my Mom, in her old age its easier for her to get in one of these than my car. The hatch is easier to carry her walker and a few other things. We've had BMW's in the family for over 25 years so she is comfortable with the brand. Maybe this vehicle doesn't fit in your life, but there is no need to spread hate, its just a niche vehicle.
I turned off when he said the x1 was ugly, this man clearly has taste and judgement issues.

They spend 50-70 thousands get a good design in 2016 and it is now get a ugly comment.

This X2 is definelty not "cool". Very dull and I personally think ugly. Its got BMW logos on all sides and a squished rear. Its also a fwd based car. I'll pass
