- 'Icelandic Volcano Creates Giant Crack Through Centre of Town'.
This town in Iceland appears to have been split in two by volcanic activity.
A huge crack in the earth snakes through the centre of Grindavik.
But the overall threat level of a volcanic eruption in Iceland has been downgraded from emergency to ‘danger’.
3,400 residents from the fishing town of Grindavik were evacuated from their homes earlier this month.
It came after weeks of heightened alert after the region was shaken by hundreds of small earthquakes.
According to reports from the Met office, the likelihood of a sudden eruption is decreasing daily within the Grindavik area.
It meant residents were temporarily allowed to return home to collect their belongings.
However, experts say this could change at any moment…
There may only be a few minutes’ warning before a potential eruption.

I hope all the best for the residents of Grindavik. It's a good thing they can collect the most possible of their belongings. But I think the city is too damaged now, and even if there is no eruption this year, then the thread will still remain for a long time as the crack seems to remain very active. Hope they can rebuild a new city in a safe area, the sooner as possible. Hope the whole country will manifest solidarity in helping to achieve this goal. Iceland is a country like no others in the world.

I'm very very happy that the people can return to their homes !! The onus should have been with the people if they wanted to leave their homes or not.
Well, i bet, even the people that didn´t want to get evacuated (if there have been any) are freaking glad the scientist did such a great job to predict something would happen,

They live over an active volcano. My bet is on the people trust and listen to their experts and aren't trying to 2nd guess or accuse them of some conspiracy.

Volcanic activity in the underground caused the earthquakes - thousands of them. It is a shield volcano stretching over a very large area. The eruptions are fissure eruptions, from multiple fissures, not just one large one. Google "shield volcano"
I would pump water into that crack, cooling the lave below and stabilizing that area, later fill up.

This applies to a LOT of places around the world. We humans tend to ignore nature and geology and built on active faults and volcanoes, or in places very prone to hurricanes. Nature always wins!
