How McLaren's biggest F1 upgrade is based on designs that 'don’t look logical'

  • The upgrade McLaren introduced on Lando Norris’s car for the Singapore Grand Prix might not have looked like much to the naked eye, but the team characterises it as its biggest of the season.
    What technical director James Key describes as the first step towards a new concept, also features some counter-intuitive designs.
    So with McLaren re-establishing itself in fourth place in the constructors’ championship thanks to Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finishing fourth and fifth in Singapore, what does this tell us about the effectiveness of the upgrade?
    And even more importantly, what can we learn about McLaren’s development direction for 2023.

    The upgrades seem very logical to me. It's all about directing the air to the top of the diffuser and sealing the sides. Plus protecting them from "rogue" vortices that can disrupt the laminar airflow.
    Will it work? We will see on the next few races.

    • @gaikokuhito5574
      @gaikokuhito5574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The air flow directional changes actually starts at the venturi tunnel with the new inner fin being raised to pinch airflow down the inside of the chassis along the sidepods creating huge amount of suction but this is then sealed off by the top of the fin creating a vorticy, which most likely spins outwards from the cars sidepod. McLaren then has learned finally the double floor concept by using the air above the floor to pinch the underfloor creating a high pressure area effectively creating a double floor thus sealing off the floors edge closer to the tunnel and creating a greater undercut under the side pod, which then yes as you stated direct more clean forceful air towards the rear of the car and the diffuser but they also have learned to release the double floor pressure towards the rear of the car meaning once the car hits a predetermined speed with rather reduce suction of the under floor as the air spill out around the side of the rear tires. This means further updates to the car will be directed at the rear of the car to generate more downforce using the new air flow that they have created with the current change. Also watch for a floor change just in front of the rear tires when they figure out that they can squeeze some of that airflow being pushed around the tire can actually be directed to inside the tires leading edge towards the diffuser aiding in creating more rear down force.
      It is a great step in the right direction and they should see great effects of the changes in Japan due to the medium speed flowing aspect of the track. They should be faster in the S turns and spoon corner with the new upgrade package. They will most likely confirm the direction change this week with further updates coming later unless they have reardown force changes already in the works. It will be interesting to see if they send Danny out in the old car on Friday and Lando in the new car to see the difference in cornering speed through the S turns and spoon; before switching Danny to the new spec in the afternoon.

    Race Pace gap to the leader on slick tyres:
    +1.08s -- Lando Norris
    +2.73s -- Daniel Ricciardo
    Even if you excuse the driver & tyre difference, that is still over a second per lap gained with this update on a track that didn't suit the car before the team generated any data in order to maximise the car's potential in set up. It'll be interesting to see if McLaren are still even quicker in qualifying than in the race like they have been with Lando this year.

    SMH, yes a change has been made, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. You can't ignore the oddities of Singapore. Wet conditions and the number of SC's caused by mechanical and driver errors played significantly into finishing spots. Also, if the car changes were significant, you'd have expected to see Norris pushing to challenge the top 3 teams, which I didn't really see. You also would have expected Danny Ric to be much farther behind, which also wasn't the case. let's see what Japan brings before we overreact to the changes.

    Super informative, despite most technical info going way over my head. In any case, I have an intuition that next year we will see the excitement that was meant to take place this year, but was usurped from us by RBR/MV instead. And by this I mean, Mercedes and McLaren have to significantly improve their cars, and provide a real opportunity for their four brilliant drivers to fight for the top places on the grid. And, I pray Ferrari rethinks their strategic tactics, also to allow them a more consistent place fighting for victory. The six great drivers are all there, ready to displace Red Bull from its position of monopoly, but Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari need to provide them with good racing cars (something they have done plenty of times in the past), so, we the public can enjoy a season of excitement and unpredictability with not two, but four teams fighting for victories, and ultimately the title. Amen.

      A major problem with any aerodynamics are they're always in a susceptible area of damage e.g front wing, bargeboards, rear wings, any sticky up bits. What's ur point? Also GE will be big for the teams that create super/hypercars or cars in other series. GE also has alot to do with diffusers and diffusers are important

      As opposed to the critical standard auto part of the barge board. I’m so happy I can just look down at all the aero surfaces of my car and think, “thanks F1!” You’re mixing together two very different parts of the sport. Engine development is the part that is heavily connected to the auto industry and their development of new technologies. However, chassis development is entirely focused on going fast within the rules. If a new piece of chassis tech helps out other types of cars, it’s a happy accident.

    Put a new rule in place and make in mandatory for the cars going to the grid to slowly drive on a glass bridge and allow media to film and take photos of the underside of the cars. If a car starts from the pit i doesn't have to go on the glass bridge. The teams should not be allowed to put a cover underneath that the remove on the grid. They can paint the cars in colors and patterns to disguise the real shape.

    So.... who did they copy?

  • @fam.hunger5244
    @fam.hunger5244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its extremely logical, but you have not understand it. They now have totally copied Red Bulls concept now. Red Bull designed a floor with a high "roof", put a lot of vortices creators there, opened up the diffusors sidewall and energise the vortices with air from the Top of the diffusor. What basically is pretty similar to how the old flat-floors worked. This concept relies more on diffuser performance than on ground effect, what is also the reason why Red Bull was not affected by TD039 and the higher ride heights, whlie this completely corrupted Ferraris philosophy with a low tunnel roof, totally dependant on ground effect and low ride heights...so McLarens update is very logical if you know that they copied Red Bulls and their concept relies on diffuser performance. You obviously did not understand what they did, also not what the flow-vis showed. Look where the flow-vis flows to....its into the small opening at the sidewall of the diffuser. This is definetely the right concept post TD39, but with copying only - McLaren will not challenge the Top 3. Now they have to come up with innovative concepts by themselves.
    As Ground Effect gets further reduced in 2023 we can learn that McLaren has understood that and we will get cars again that will have more problems with overtaking, as the cars will create more turbulent air again, as all the teams will build cars that rely on diffuser performance.

    • @stevenmoran4060
      @stevenmoran4060 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that another embarrassment for Hitler Wolfe, all that rubbish about safety standards with a lower ride height and how it will affect Red Bull more than anyone else.
      MB could have stopped the bouncing after one race by rising their ride height but refused and so therefore they subjected their drivers to potential health problems and all because their car just doesn’t cut it this year. I actually doubt they ever had the best car at all. They only dominated because of the advance info FIA gave them about the engine regs so they had the best design and the most power. Nobody else got close but, Honda got on the case once they were away from McClaren dictating how to package the power unit and Red Bill gave them the freedom to design the best package and then Mr Newey will design the car around the unit. The Honda unit is probably just behind Ferrari for power but RB have by far the best aero design leading to domination this year.
      Can’t see McClaren re emerging next year at all because they have consistently failed over the last 10 years. Zak Brown isn’t the man to lead them to victory anytime soon. He has the same problem in Indy Cars and they all use the same chassis! Good team just not the very best.
      People forget Red Bull dominated before the power unit changes and only fell behind because they couldn’t get a half decent power unit. MB refused to sell to them knowing full well RB would again dominate.
