I really think the screaming parts on waking the fallen seem well thought out and not random. They contribute to the songs and theres a perfect balance between cleans and screams. In surprised that he claims they were only there because they couldnt think of anything better. To me they really fit the context perfectly. On city of evil however I dont think screaming would fit very well but thats because the riffs and progressions of the songs were made to be more melodic. I really love all their albums though, they are all masterpieces in their own way.
I think it's a little column A column B. Some of the screaming parts fit so well because it would almost be silly to sing over some of the riffs as you would get locked into singing some bluesey melody, or a repetitive tune like in Almost Easy (which works there ofc). Also, the screaming lets all of those rich riffs and ringing dual parts shine because it's just texture and rhythm over some beautiful guitar writing. It could be fun to try to guess which screaming parts were phoned in and which were meticulously written!
Same thing eminem did about relapse. The statement that you are your own worst critic is true. The way eminem called relapse garbage when its his 2nd or 3rd best album I've ever heard is how Matt and the band think of their screaming days. They don't understand that is their prime form
I didn't know M. Shadows was getting into Euro Power bands like BG and SA! I remember people who wouldn't even give those bands a chance but would rock with Avenged Sevenfold RELIGIOUSLY!!! That's fucking hilarious to me! I'm glad he was digging that music too like I was!
When City of Evil came out there were all these rumours about his vocal cords being damaged and requiring surgery for why they stopped screaming. Were those all fan rumours? I do believe M Shadows in this interview but it brought back all the memories of those rumours when they changed their direction with City of Evil.
Not a musician and def not a singer but I agree with Matt when it comes to screaming. I've watched some of the videos where men unexpectedly learn fry screaming almost right away with of course guidance and given they follow the proper technique. It's not the same case when you're screaming or trying to hit hight notes with certain melody because each song has to sound different from each other.
I also prefer Avenged Sevenfold's songs without too much scream, just a cherry on top. Waking the Fallen has many scream but also nice clear melody, like I Won't See You Tonight pt 2 and the popular Unholy Confession. And today I think he almost use no scream at all in every song? But still sounds amazing. The Stage is by far my most favorite A7X album

I know why he stopped, it was his decision. He never had surgery like many had speculated. He wanted fully clean vocals to be in their third album, moving away from metalcore.
He had a surgery but it was I think many many years ago and he was screaming well after the surgery if I am correct and everyone thinks that his voice is worse just because he stopped screaming but his voice is still amazing. If he wants I think he can still scream for example the God hates us song. He had at some point a problem with his voice and they cancelled some concerts but that was 4 years ago I think. Let's see what kind of songs the new album will have

They still made some pretty good songs that I enjoyed after that, but I’m not as much of a fan of them as I used to be.

Shads and the others have debunked the sugery bs for more than a decade now. It always was a fanmade rumor because for some illiterates, choosing not to scream equals not being capable anymore. He got surgery in 2018 cause his voice got destroyed on tour. He legit didnt feel like he wanted to keep screaming for like 2 yrs (2005/06) and by 2007 he was doing them again live and in studio.
