    Update: Remember, this is only a temporary solution since I will eventually be building a barn for the RV. This allows me to save on storage fee costs and get the RV moved.

      My wife and I recently purchased 35 acres in the mountains of Colorado. We love to RV and have always found your videos very helpful. Now that you have that beautiful property we’re really excited about all the great info and ideas you’ll have. We’ve been talking about doing our driveway on our own. This video gives us hope we can do it. Thanks for the great content. Keep up the good work. Happy holidays 👍🏽

    Hey JD, I own a construction company in Michigan and I noticed the holes in your bucket... you should get a bolt on cutting edge so you don’t prematurely wear out the bucket on your tractor. Been following you for years and love the content!

    As an asphalt construction owners daughter, I learned a good base is imperative to extending the life of an asphalt parking lot, parking spot, driveway, etc. Think about the weight that’ll be sitting on your RV spot. The soil appears to be sandy loam - please advise if this is incorrect. Usually you’d want a couple inches of 1”-1.5” crusher run laid down and compacted before placing the mat and reclaimed asphalt. Sealing the asphalt and all edges with a seal coat product is necessary to prevent water from seeping under the mat and between the mat and reclaimed asphalt, otherwise your looking at crumbling around the perimeter and across the surface. I’m curious to see how this works for you. I love your videos and really miss the RV’s highlighted on your channel. Good luck!!

      I would absolutely agree that 99.99% of time your are absolutely correct. For this specific project, there will be very little traffic over the area as well as constant maintenance to cover any exposed or damaged areas. For me, this is slightly better than a BOONDOCKING/off-grid site since it will help control the growth of vegetation.

      Preparation is everything you need Crusher run under that mat. Water is going under the mat and turn it into soup. Also you need to cover the edges of the mat the mat can't show. We'll it will look good for a while 🤭 From another Michigan MDOT viewer!

      I used to make this stuff in the 80s it was a dupont product called typar its a spun bonded product has finish on it to let water pass through. The used it on road projects all over the world for perminet and tempary serfaces. Takes less gravel. Dont have any idea how it worked out. Was layed off in 87.

    Wooohhhooo! This was a great video! Loved the slow-mo of the bucket release that gave the waterfall effect with dirt! So glad this is a family project for you and your Dad. Love my dually class B with Sprinter engine. Perfect size for running cross-country, great gas mileage and easy parking at rest stops, small spaces at RV parks and most grocery stores. Ditto on spraying a ground clear product as it reduces the first year growth that comes through or settles on top of the geo fabric. I didn't do that at one of my stone placements and now I do for all my walkways, dry landscapes and RV pads. I found a company in CO that carries products specific for management such as St. Augustine or Bermuda grass. I also deal with Creeping Charlie that comes in every year in different locations. It's a US, Veteran-owned business.

    If you really want to make it stable have the millings be at least 4" thick and spray them down with tack oil and roll them. It will tighten them up so they are durable and will last a long time.

    I am thankful for all of the valuable safety related information I have learned from your channel about towing RV's, so I sincerely hope you will listen to an experienced compact tractor owner's advice in return. Please stop using your tractor's loader without ballast. Not only can this easily cause a rollover, you are also prematurely wearing your front axle. Carrying full buckets of material on your front end without offsetting rear weight will significantly overload your front axle. It comes down to simple physics. You really need to add a combination of axle mounted weight (like fluid in the rear tires and/or wheel weights) and 3 point mounted ballast like a heavy rear implement, ballast box, or Heavy Hitch with suitcase weights. I use a combination of all 3 myself.

    A gun club at which I shoot had the road into the property covered with that reclaimed asphalt a couple of years ago. It immediately stopped the dust problems and now it looks as though it was paved. Traffic compacted it as though a roller had done the job.....

  • @MikeC19100
    @MikeC19100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wasn’t aware you could purchase reclaimed asphalt for projects like that, but it makes perfect sense and probably is a much better option for cost savings than buying new stone. Ditto on the spraying for weeds as there is a lot of organic material in that reclaimed surface material and, as you probably already know, the weeds will grow just about anywhere. We have a decent sized patio filled with the sand that’s supposed to remain hard after the first rain, but that only worked the first 2 years and now we have to fight cleaning out the weeds every year and spraying for them only works for a couple months.

    Just wondering why you didn’t strip the topsoil before putting down the geo-tech material. That would make for a better stable base if you place geo-tech materiel down on the clay soil. What you did will work, however for longevity removing topsoil would last longer.

      Because it's 3ft of Sandy loam before hitting clay. The grass will just die under the cover and be compressed and decay under.. I consulted several builders before choosing this route

  • @jme21-
    @jme21- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That recycled asphalt is ridiculously dry. You should try to make some calls to someone that can source fresh recycled asphalt that still has the oils in it so that it will compact better when you drive over it. You'll want about a 4+ inch layer, but as is, that stuff is going to be all over the place and likely won't compact very well at all. Even with fresh stuff, over time you're going to have a layer of loose asphalt on the top, but underneath will be highly compacted and won't move around on you.

    Interesting way of doing things. I could see this process for a driveways, but parking an RV on it? Odd, Every RV Pad I have done work on is one of two things. 1) Ground dug out about 1 foot with 3/4 crush dumped, packed in and smoothed out with 4" of 1/2" crush packed in over the top and leveled out, or 2) minimum of 4" reinforced concrete pad over well prepared area. will what you are doing hold up to the weight of the RV just sitting on it? I have a feeling you may have issues with settling. As well as having that material getting drug in the RV on your shoes if you are not careful. Your property and your project. You tend to go way overboard on your other projects, just surprised you did not do the same here for that area the RV was going to be setting on. The rest of the driveway, this is a great solution, despite not putting in a good gravel base for better drainage and compaction. BTW, Most dump truck drivers would do a rolling dump on request, if you would have had the fabric laid out prior. So when the next load comes out, see if the dump truck driver will do the rolling pour for you.

      @@maxhenry1977 max, that's because the ground is Sandy Loam. There is 3-4ft of it and it's all just as soft. Sandy loam is actually very stabile and one of the best bases to build on.

    I sell Hot Mixed Asphalt Concrete (Asphalt Paving) and Concrete for a living. I know you're trying to do it economically, but you have no base to support the weight of the 5th wheel. If that Fabric you put down let's water go thru, you are going to have problems after a big rain. I would have done 5" of 3000 psi Concrete. Or at least 6" Calche base compacted then add the Millings on top.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Since this is a 6-8month solution only, I opted to go with economy over longevity. The RV will have its own barn eventually. I want to be able to return that spot to grass at some point.

      Let's correct this comment. I've always posted between 2-3 RV tour videos a week. I still do. In between those videos I posted towing, accessory, rant, and "other" videos (biking, fixing things, and random stuff). What has changed? Instead of doing as many biking and fixing things videos, I'm busy at the ranch working. Why not show that stuff instead? The RV and Truck content will always be a major part of the channel. I recently did the Tundra, GMC, Ford, and Nissan reveals and events. I think you may be noticing my channel more because of the ranch videos. The reality of it is, I'm still posting the same number of RV videos. As a final note... Other than a very very few, I post more videos each week than almost every other RV related channel on TH-cam. (Matt's RV Reviews being about the only other one).
