I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
    1. Venue
This concert was at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Northern Germany, which takes place every first weekend in August (alas, not this year due to coronavirus) in a 2,000 people village in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It used to be, or still is, the biggest metal festival in the world, anyway the most prestigious one. It is a four-day festival (Wednesday to Saturday); Nightwish were headlining the Saturday show, right after Alice Cooper. There were 82,000 people in the audience.
    2. Lyrics
The composer and lyricist of the band is Tuomas, the keyboardist and band founder and leader. He did use to have some Christian imagery in his lyrics, but mostly as metaphors; there is one outright Christian song (The Carpenter) on their very first album, which was released in 1997. In recent years, the band has become explicitly and very publicly secular/atheist, collaborating with well-known atheist Richard Dawkins and writing lyrics critical of religion and referencing science and evolution a lot. (Personally, I salute this turn of events very much.) Of the members, Tuomas, Troy (flute/pipe/bouzouki/guitar etc. etc. player, not on this song) and Floor are openly secular/atheist, Marko is agnostic, the other members usually don't say much in interviews. :)
The lyrics to Ghost Love Score use some Christian imagery, but in spite of that and of the very dramatic composition of the song, this is a pining/love song, about a love that never happened (a ghost [of a] love). The protagonist (probably Tuomas) wants this love (the siren) to free him of the blemishes his character has sustained, to transport him back to an innocent, childlike state again. That is the meaning of the child being born again and the siren "carrying him" to the protagonist.
    3. Timeframe
Ghost Love Score was published on their 2004 album "Once", Élan was published on their 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". However, please don't draw the conclusion that they were great and epic in 2004 and a mere radio-friendly in 2015. Every Nightwish album (apart from the first, I think, when they were not really a mature band) has one or two kind of radio-friendly tracks that are usually published as singles too. Élan was the first single off Endless Forms Most Beautiful, and Ghost Love Score is the grand sweeping epic track off Once. They have writtten other epics since (The Poet And The Pendulum and The Greatest Show On Earth) and had radio-friendly tracks earlier (off the album Once for instance the song Nemo, which I think got some airplay in the states). They usually span quite a lot of genres on one album, from soft ballads to straight power/thrash metal and everything in between, often somewhat folk-tinged. So no, they haven't become any more commercial than they were back in 2004. In fact, their current album Human. :||: Nature., just released, has a thirty minute purely orchestral track on the second CD and nine quite cerebral and progressive songs on the first CD, all very well done, where no song is like the other.
    4. Show
They do tour the world, having played on every continent except Antarctica (I think they played a concert in Libya once, so that at least touches Africa). They are most popular in Europe and Latin America, however; in North America they usually play smaller or medium-sized venues, which is actually something I as a European fan envy you guys for; I'd love to see them close up in a small venue, and here in Europe they play the big venues and have begun to play stadiums. Four measly shows were planned in North America for the 2020 tour, one in Toronto, one in NYC and two in LA, because I think a support act defected them? Other fans, please correct me if I'm wrong. Normally, they would have played more dates. But now, with no concerts probably for all of 2020, who knows what they'll do when this shit is over. I'm definitely hoping and fretting that they make their December 14, 2020 date in Berlin, Germany, which I have tickets for.
    5. Worship the Floor
That is an order. :) No, I already told you in my comment under your Élan reaction that she's amazing in so many ways. Now you've seen not just ten percent of what she can do, but already thirty percent. If you choose to further react to Nightwish or her solo material or her earlier bands (After Forever / ReVamp / Northward), more will be forthcoming.
So I guess we'll get some more Nightwish reactions out of you? Always nice to see someone smitten with them. :)

Wow, thanks for all the breakdowns and answers to my questions!! I really appreciate that. It helps me get to know the situation and the bands history.

      @dyingbreed1951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They had an (unnamed) co-headliner for the North American tour, so they could play more and larger venues, but whoever it was backed out. So they had to scramble to at least get a few smaller venues in for the North American crowd. Was a last minute thing, which is why there are only four dates set.

    • @oliphant2848
      @oliphant2848 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@dyingbreed1951 Ah, okay, I see. Don't ever rely on external help in your growth, try to stand on your own feet. But at least that leaves the possibility that they can book a decent North American tour once concert dates can be rescheduled. Perhaps with the help of our gracious host the Rook and other YT reactors, they become known enough in the US that they can fill some bigger venues on their own next year.

Outside context problem, that was some very helpful information. As Rook said, thank you for taking the time to break everything down so well.
The only part that was sad was when you said, "Personally, I salute this turn of events very much," in connection with Nightwish's overall trend of turning their backs on God and becoming increasingly resistant to the Truth.
That's definitely not something that should ever be saluted.
      Other than that, great post.

This Wacken open air festival, in North Germany, which is held every year. The burning head is the logo of the festival! And yep they were headlining there.
    Goosebumbs....ehm 🤔 Floorgasm 👌
Nightwish are at their best at Live shows...here there were 82.000 + people. Wacken 13 is awesome the whole concert, pick a song and you are in for a treat!
London 15 for me is their 2nd best because of The Poet and the Pendulum and 7 Days to the Wolves are played there, which are songs you have to watch! You just have to 😁 And the atmosphere was Awesome there that evening (so to say)
Buenos Aires 2018 fills up my Top 3 boy that crowd 😋 and they played some very fine tunes there!
Last I want to mention Tampere 15 The Greatest Show on Earth, great song, great story, music and Lyrics are Good, 24 min +/- Experience, a bit of homestudy on this song can help! 🤘
    My fall.....will be......for youuuu!
And how was that note for you? 😳🤣 "so many goosebumps right now" 👌 it is known....prepare for more Floorgasms, if you continue on this Journey!

The "Child" theme has nothing to do with Jesus. In Tuomas' (the main songwriter and keyboards player) lyrics, the child (or the dead boy) is a common theme to refer to innocence and the capacity of wonder (and when it's lost in the passage to adulhood, hence the dead boy). In this song, the siren (the object of the songwriter's passion) brought his ability to wonder and dream back to him.

Hey, greets from Germany. Wacken is a very small village (around 5.000 inhabitants) in northern Germany and for a weekend of the year home of one of the biggest metal festivals in the world. The skull is the logo of the festival. Over 82.000 people were part of this show. Was a great evening! Try "Song Of Myself" or "Dark Chest Of Wonders" (The opener to this amazing evening!) for a little more heavier sound of them. Nightwish are one of the best live bands around these days.

Ghost Love Score is from the 2004 album "Once"; it was originally sung by the band's first vocalist, Tarja Turunen. Elan is from 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", which was the first album written and recorded with Floor as the band's vocalist. So there is about a decade and two vocalists between the two songs.

Krzysiek It's not that they aren't religious. They are religious, but they also happen to be anti-Christianity and anti-God.
Their songs are full of religious imagery and symbolism, in fact. For example, "Greatest Show on Earth" is an homage to the religions of atheism and evolution.
That song worships the creation (nature) without giving credit to the Creator (God).
So, they are a religious band, only they follow a false religion.

To answer your question, I'm talking about truth, not religion per se.
So, do I know which religion is correct? Yes, because I know the truth, and obviously the religions that aren't true, aren't correct.
For example, the earth is a sphere. That's the truth. Therefore, any other view that says otherwise, is incorrect. The "flat-earthers" are obviously wrong, and so is anyone who thinks the earth is a triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, etc.
It's pretty straightforward. There is the truth (the reality), and then false views.

Tuomas very much sees himself as a composer and a poet. He doesn't often write 100% straight-forward lyrics, and always leaves things open to the listeners interpretation. Even when he "explains" his lyrics, it's left vague and open-ended. His lyrics tend to be very personal, and reflect emotions he lived during (often) turbulent times. Especially in their early songs, there was also a bit of "not quite correct" English going on, imho. Hella talented though, and his musical compositions are absolutely inspiring.

And she don't just seems to be like a goddess, she is the Goddess. ;-))) Wacken is in Germany and it's a big open air metal festival. Nightwish was the main event in 2013 and there was 82000 of audience. Like a movie = Score, you get it. Great reaction and greetings from Finland!

Floor the lead singer has had some classical training and is a 6’1” Dutch vocal beast!Id say it’s best to react to their live performances every time rather than studio tracks...they’re definitely a live band and you get a lot more from their live performances than their album tracks...Nightwish songs range across Rock,Celtic,Operatic,Thrash and Folk, lots of variety and styles to choose from.
If you want a few more suggestions for a bit more of Nightwish then try these.Theyre all from the Wacken,Wembley and Tampere shows and great quality 👍

The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html )
As a next song to take a look at i would recommend their masterpiece "The poet and the pendulum" live at Wembley. Them being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the long epic multipart full production type songs like Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. Then they have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. They even have a very celtic rock sound going on in songs like E'lan or My Walden.. You chose, but the Nightwish Army loves it all..

Most of the members of Nightwish are atheist or secular. Their early albums had some of those themes. Lyrics to most of these songs can be taken multiple ways, they are there for you to interpret your way. If thats what it means to you, thats what it means. Yes , they were the headliners of the last day of the festival.

This song has a long history, it was first released in 2004 with their first singer, Tarja Turunen. When Floor came on board she revitalized a lot of the old songs and (I think) did an amazing job of it - not that this song wasn't incredible to begin with!
This concert at Wacken (an open air metal festival) was in 2013 and the song that you already heard, Elan, was released in 2014. Since then they've released two albums, one just a month ago. These albums have a strong theme to them of nature, evolution and natural history, as well as humanity. Songs from these albums that are really worth a listen are Alpenglow, Shudder before the Beautiful, Greatest Show on Earth (don't let the length scare you!) My Walden, Shoemaker, and How's the Heart.

Hi, as you requested some more about Nightwish. But before that some information about this concert. Wacken is a small town in Germany so you pronounce the "a" more like "u" and the "W" more like a "V". It's the world's largest metal festival and Nightwish had been the main act that evening. The crowd was about 82,000!
Since you are new to Nightwish, I'll give you the short history of the band: " Nightwish was started in 1996. They are considered a female-fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals. And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012. The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me, Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable playing live concerts.
I will warn you that Nightwish fans are hardcore. So be prepared, the Nightwish army will rush your channel.
Here some suggestions with other Nightwish songs with the current lineup of the band you may like:

" Epica - featuring Floor - Sancta Terra" (symphonic metal) th-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/w-d-xo.html
"Epica featuring Floor- Stabat Mater Dolorosa" (classic) th-cam.com/video/nhtOORYTGx8/w-d-xo.html you will be surprised how cam a crowd of metalheads can be.
Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th named "Human :||: Nature" ("Shoemaker" is the 3rd track from this concept album) - just take a peek to their official playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html , there is a song with the ending brings most of us to tears, no joke (it's about a famous scientist).

versatile vocalist, Floor Jansen can sing from ethereal, classical and operatic singing, to powerful belting, and aggressive, raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. She is a soprano.
Jansen started studying music at the Dutch Rock Academy in 1999, entering the Conservatorium Tilburg three years later. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. Later, she started teaching ,great reaction. Try yours is an empty hope ,romanticide, shutter before the beautiful

"The Child" is a recurring theme in Nightwish's songs, but it's not related to religion (Nightwish have a lot of songs criticizing religion, cristianity in particular). The Child refers to our inner child, the reflection of our innocence. Searching for the lost innocence, the lost inner child, is a recurring theme in the first 5 nightwish albums (at least).
Another recurring theme is everything ocean-related, so "the siren", "the sea", "oceanborn", which kind of represent home, a safe place. In general the ocean is often linked with positive meanings, as the songwriter has a special passion for it.
Go with "Storytime" or "Romanticide" from the same concert for next videos ;)

Romanticide or Storytime are def the next ones you need to react to, from this same show. Romanticide is my vote tough, cause Floor gets acompanied in the vocal department, I don't wanna say more cause I don't wanna spoil the suprise, but those 2 singing is pure bliss eveery time it happens!

Its insane to think that when this concert was performed, Floor was NOT officially in the band yet!!!!!!
2 months after this concert she was asked to join as a full-time member. Yeah, my part time job was delivering newspapers, Floor Jensen's part time job was singing for Nightwish.......so not fair!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost forgot to point out some of the "must listen" songs from Nightwish: The Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley 2015 is one of the most powerful and impressive. The Poet and the Pendulum is a very special song from a very special moment in the story of the band, when Tuomas had to push out the original singer, Tarja despite the friendship and everything because the professional relationship had just broken down. Tarja was very loved and very unique and the breaking down of the original band was caused of much drama from many fans and also, of course, just put Tuomas in a bad light and in lots of doubts, including about ever being able to write music again. The song is about the loss of inspiration and, with it, the rage and hate of those who used to be "friends" / "fans". We might not see that song performed live ever again, because, in Tuomas's words, those dark thoughts are gone. Still, the song is awesome and the performance is amazing.
"Song of Myself" from Wacken 2013 is a must as well. "7 days to the wolves" from Wembley 2015 is great. "The Greatest Show on Earth" is an utter masterpiece, enormous and full of literal science quotes. I'd suggest the one from the live show in Tampere 2015 for maximum WOW effect.
"10th man down" from the live in Buenos Aires is a personal favorite. "Gethsemane" and "Dead Boy Poem" also from the Decades tour, live in Buenos Aires are fantastic performances too.
There's more, but these will make for a great introduction. I've been addicted to Nightwish music ever since a friend put "Ghost Love Score" in my ears back in school...

If you are into floorgasms... the Band Babymetal with the live song called Road of Resistance... it is japanese metal so you might want to have the lyrics up at the side.
It is kinda weird but wow.
I like them pretty darn much tho xD

Dude, if you think this is a song for the end of the world, check out Nightwish's live video for The Greatest Show on Earth! Exactly what you said, a meteor is on it's way and there's a concert for the end of the world. I'm in tears every time i watch it and the crowd yells "We Were Here!", as if in defiance of the meteor/bombs, etc . . .

  • @nykkyah12

There is no way that i would characterise their lyrics or them as 'Christian'...Their lyrics usually represent childhood wonderment and innocence or fantasy themes(even some disney themes, especially since Tuomas has stated that Hans Zimmer is an influence to his style of compositions). In their later albums they often reference lyrics from other songs on that concept album. They love referencing science and folklore/mythical beings as well. I'm glad you're enjoying Nightwish, and I'm sure you already have a massive list to do of them, but honestly just work through all their live shows as they will offer you the best experience!

Sorry this is late but I just saw your recent reaction to Storytime. If you ever get the chance to go to a concert...GO! Once you see them live you will never forget it. A Siren from the deep refers to sea creatures in Greek mythology who lured sailors to their death with their enchanting vocals. I'll try to be brief but you seemed really intrigued by this verse so I'll try to explain. There were thought to be three kinds of sirens. The Celestial, the Generative and the Purificatory and they were governed under Zeus, Poseiden and Hades respectively. When the soul is in heaven the sirens seek, by harmonic motion, to unite it to the divine life of the celestial host and when in Hades, to conform the soul to eternal infernal regimen but when on earth their only job is to produce generation, of which the sea is emblematic. The Sirens symbolize temptation, desire and risk. Now with that in mind I'm sure you can piece the rest together. Greek mythology is another one of my sick infatuations. Once you dig in it's hard to get out lol. Hope this helps!

82000+ people; better listen to the whole concert at Wacken, they are live at their best. Certainly NOT a Christian band, they dislike every form of ecclesiastical organization, because there is a lot done wrong in the name of.... Not opposed to spirituality and using themes from religions.
By the way: it is not just the singer but about the band as total, they deteste personal glorification, but I admit: her voice is beautiful, you haven't heard half of what she is capable of

Floorgasm on a second verse! Congrats! ))
Burning bull head is a logo of Wacken festival ("Va-ken", it is in Germany, open "a" like in "card").
You actually totally right -- nearly everybody who saw Floor call her Goddess. Valkyrie Goddess to be exact) Trust me, you haven't heard even 10% of what she capable of doing with her vocals, buckle up! I was dead serious when I said on your previous video that Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today. And you just starting to realize why ;)
Élan is a song from 2015, from their first album with Floor -- Endless Forms Most Beautiful. And this show took place in 2013.
For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After this world tour they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark.
Drummer here is Jukka ("Yukka", line "Yansen"), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues. Nothing serious, but he doing administrative word in a band now.
For the next step, I can suggest listening to:
    - Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live
    - for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also
    - If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019.
